Q: What is Savoury? A: Savoury is a herb/spice you can buy it fresh or dried, kit.co/bonitas... Its equal to thyme or sage.
See link to PICKLED ONIONS • Pickled Onions - Tradi...
Serves 6
Ingredients:
1 - 340g can Corned Beef 4 Medium potatoes
2 Medium onions ½ Cup flour
1 lg. Egg Pinch pepper, as needed
1 tsp savoury ¼ Cup milk
Pinch sea salt for boiling potatoes 1 tbsp butter and oil for frying onions
Prep-Time 10 Min, Cook Time 30 Min
Method:
Peel and boil potatoes for ten minutes with a pinch of salt until cooked, then drain water off and let cool to room temperature.
In a frying pan add butter and oil to sauté onions until golden brown.
Open a can of corned beef and chop in small pieces, then place in a bowl.
Then add the other ingredients, potatoes, savoury and pepper, mash together with your corned beef until all combined.
Then add sautéd onions and mix them together.
In a small bowl add your egg and milk then mix together.
In a small plate add your flour with a pinch of pepper.
Scoop up some corned beef mixture and shape into a round flat cake/patties, then roll in the egg wash and then in the flour set aside until all is made. " If the corned beef mixture is still warm, put it in the fridge for 15 minutes then follow the above method."
In a hot frying pan, add butter and olive oil when hot, start frying your cakes, a couple of minutes on each side until golden brown.
When corned beef cakes are fried, put them on a plate with a side of onion pickles and sunny side up egg, fried touton, slice of bread or a side of choice.
Bonita’s Tips: Sautéd onions with give the corned beef cakes a amazing flavour, if you use raw onion grate them first before adding to mixture.
Adding salt will be optional because corned beef in the can is a little salty.
I apologize in advance if anything in this video is not clear or miss read, please follow my recipe when making this dish.

The Day The World Came To Town is a great book about all the folks having to land in Gander, Newfoundland on 9/11 and the kindness shown them there!!! It will make you want to visit there.
Yes Phyllis, that was indeed a sad and horrible day for a lot of people. Our culture is all about helping people and sharing kindness and respect. Thank you for sharing your message with us, maybe someday you can visit our great province and thank you for stopping by and have a wonderful day. Bonita
My mother used to call canned corned beef "Bully Beef" too. We live in Australia. We used to have it in sandwiches with homemade mustard pickles for lunches. Later on, I shared a house with an Asian mate who'd make a fantastic stir fry with a can of corned beef and loads of veggies.
I remember my Grandfather from Newfoundland calling it Bully Beef too.
Yes, I still call it Bully Beef. We have beef cakes quite often as well as salmon cakes and the best is salt cod fish cakes. ❤️
I can't explain why, but I just love this amazing, warm, intelligent woman. Wish she was my neighbor, but I'm glad we can enjoy her company and recipes online.
Rach S. Esq. Thank you so much for your lovely message, I'm glad you are enjoying my channel. We love bringing these delicious meals and recipes to you as well. :) Thanks Bonita
I wish I had nice neighbours like this lady, I am surrounded by nasty hateful neighbours, they do and say all sorts of bad things, one of them actually broke pieces off my wooden fence to make a KKK cross and burn it in my backyard, he couldn't even show some respect and buy his own timber.
@@buddylove2835 Not fit, no respect thats for sure. We have lovely neighbours and they help each other with work and even have block parties. We are pretty lucky thats for sure. I can say move but thats not easy but diffently you need nicer neighbours. Good luck and enjoy your day. Bonita
@@bonitaskitchen That's really heart warming to know, it gives me hope. Here in the UK it's a hostile environment especially towards minorities. In the North of England it's the worst affected, recently I had a conversation with an old Jewish guy in my local supermarket his family history was amazing he also said to me that the far-right had many supporters in England and gaining strength each day, I truly believe him.
@@johnguichard8498 Oh my so sorry to here, we are pretty blessed here in Canada. But we do have some areas that you need to be very careful. The old jewish guy sounds like a wise man. Thanks once again for stopping by and for your message. Enjoy your day. Bonita
My Mom made the same kind of patties when I was young. She was always trying to find ways to stretch a dollar with 10 to feed in our family. This is a wonderful meal to do if you have some surprise visitors. It’s all ingredients you’d have on hand normally, and it looks fancy being a patty. Another 😋 YUM vote from me!
I have been searching for this recipe for ages. My Mum used to make this with leftover corned beef & she called it " corned beef hash fritters"... they are delicious & I'm glad I can make this with canned CB too. Hi from South Australia Bonita & thank you for this delicious recipe.
You bring back the memories! I like to cook corned beef hash in the skillet, then add a fried egg. A little ketchup on the hash - so good! Hint: if the key goes awry, you can open the can with needle-nosed pliers.
I would love to have this lady for a next door neighbour!
Thank you that is so sweet, I'm glad you enjoyed our recipe and video, have a wonderful day,. :) Bonita
Who wouldn't?
@@bonitaskitchen Do you have Grits in Newfoundland? Being from the US south those cakes and eggs are begging for a side of grits which I am going add when I make those for Sunday brunch. this week.
MacheteDontTweet Thank you for your message and for stopping by,, we don't have grits but we do have something like grits called cream of wheat and also tea buns. I've had grits when visiting the states before and it's nice, I will have to had sugar or molasses to sweeten it a little. Thank you so much for stopping by. Bonita
@@bonitaskitchen this may gross you out, but I live in Alabama and grew up with gravy and biscuits and over easy eggs with grits and would bust the yolks and mix it all together either and add salt and pepper and put some of it on either homemade biscuits or toast. Yes, it's messy, but yummy to me. Never added sugar just salt and pepper. This dish your cooking sounds yummy.
My mom made those cakes and if made for breakfast we eat eggs with it or night time with steam cabbage and honey glazed carrots. Child of fifties. Thank you for reminding me . I went out and bought some going to make for supper today thank you May our lord protect you and your family during these trying times
Hi Carole: Thank you and I'm glad you enjoyed our video and recipe, its nice to have can food that can make a meal. This is a affordable meal and its lovely for breakfast, dinner or supper. Happy Easter and stay safe, god bless. Bonita

These look delicious. The lady is such a sweetheart, and I love that "Newfie" accent.
I'm from England, to me sounds like American mixed with Irish 😁
I was thinking a Irish accent. lol
pretty benign accent for a Newfie.
I have worked with and spent many hours with Newfoundlander and she don't have much of a NFLD accent.
Wayne Rogers from one region to the other of Newfoundland there are different accents and dialects. Just like in Mercia. 😉🇨🇦
Sounds and looks delicious. Somebody just gave me a small can of corned beef. Now I better go get some potatoes and onions. My pantry is bare! Lol
Haha that is so funny, you enjoy to the fullest and stock up your panty with can corned beef. :) Enjoy to the fullest and happy New Year. Bonita
Just made this recipe and got (9) patties - so delicious. This one is definitely a keeper.
Llda Schelhase That is wonderful, I'm glad you enjoyed our recipe and thank you for letting us know. :) Bonita

SO SO happy to have found Bonita's Kitchen. My hubbie of over 40 years, is a Newfie, and I've learned how to make several of your dishes from my dear mother in law...who is still with us, but sadly, suffering from dementia... I wish she lived closer, and I wish I had taken in more of her lovely recipe's from home. I feel like Bonita is one of the family...comforting, gentle, and kind. And I'm learning (re-learning) some of my hubbie's old favourites - Thank you for sharing your kitchen with us.
At the beginning I said "Now, that would be perfect for slappin an Egg on."
Sure enough, you fried an Egg and put it on there.
Bless.
Meals like this are simple and that's what makes them good.
I love when I cut into an egg and the yolk drips down over whatever it's on, creating a luscious sauce. So good.
I love that you use a pie server as a spatula/turner. Put your fried egg on top of the cake.. it's like corned beef hash with eggs YUM !!!!
Bonita you know how to warm someone's heart with food like that.
Greetings from Wisconsin. Me Irish grandma makes the pickled onions and serves it with corned beef. The next day she makes leftovers for breakfast, and the pickled onions always end up at the back of the fridge. You’ve saved our pickled onions .
This is true because we forget we can use these delicious pickled onions with so many meals. Hamburgers, toasted sandwiches, boiled dinner and fish cakes, crab cakes and so much more, I will share the link to our pickled onion recipe, :) Enjoy Bonita ua-cam.com/video/jxWaB7gF5iQ/v-deo.html

Those bully beef cakes look so appetising. My mother used to make then just like that except she liked to spice them up a bit more with some hot peppers. I am drooling because of your lovely cooking Bonita. Would be heaven to have you as my next door neighbour. This is perfect coronavirus quarantine food. Lots of love from hot sunny Jamaica.
My sister married a Puerto Rican husband who grew up eating Corn Beef in a tomato soup sauce with little hunks of potatoes. It stretched for a large family of 9 when he was growing up. She would serve it over fluffy white rice. I grew to love it so much that I added this recipe to my own when I got married. Your version uses the same ingredients but in a totally different way ... fried as in patties. I'm going to try this with my next can of Corn Beef. It looks absolutely delicious and easy. Thank you ..... I love this idea, but since I live alone, it will probably last me a week. I'll see how well they freeze. when I make my sisters versions, I've learned to cut the contents in HALF so I can wrap it in saran wrap then in aluminum for the next time I''m in the mood for this delicious treat. I get 2 meals out of each can. Each one will last me for at least 3 meals each batch. Here's my hint I learned a few years ago. NEVER wrap any kind of meat with just Aluminum foil. The aluminum LEECHES the metal in to your food and has been found to contribute to alzheimer. So wrap it first with saran wrap and then the aluminum. My mother-in-law taught me to do it this way. She wanted to keep freezer burn away from the meat but now we know it also helps prevent Alzheimer.
My, that looks good! I haven’t bought corned beef in a can in years, but will now. I am a southerner and know nothing of Newfoundland cooking, but have lived in Southern California where I got into Mexican, Chinese, Italian and other styles of cooking. I have lived for years in the Pacific Northwest now and learned more while living here. At age 73 I like to cook some of all the styles of cooking I have learned, and thanks to the internet can continue to learn. I like this lady’s style and just subscribed.
Oh My thank you so much for your lovely message and for subscribing to our channel, its nice to have people from all over the world enjoying our cultural meals. We have had a style of cooking that I guess seems different to other cultures. We have a boiled meal called JIGGS DINNER where you boil your basic vegetables in a boiler with a steamed pudding and peas pudding. I will send you a link. thank you for taking the time to leave a message and have a lovely day. From Newfoundland, Canada :) Bonita ua-cam.com/video/v-sPRO8FA0c/v-deo.html
Likewise. I started taking iron. Now my appetite is back, I want to cook again. Thanks for this. Try using a lifter for the patties. I like salmon patties, too.

Put the finished pattie mixture into the fridge for an hour before working it into cakes. It'll be firmer and easier to work.
For a little extra crunch, replace the flour with breadcrumbs after the egg dip. 😋
Thank you Mac for your input and for stopping by, totally agree with cooling down the mixture first before making the cakes. Please check out our website www.bonitaskitchen.com for more tasty recipes and meal ideas. Enjoy Bonita

@@bonitaskitchen I know you're going to read this Bonita. I love corned beef mash. My best tip is to chill the whole can in the fridge, overnight if possible. It takes away all the problems that are associated with this can. It just slides out when open. Thanks.

This is very like the corned beef hash my grandmother used to make except that the potato was just diced, and the mixture wasn't made into patties.
This lady is another cook who uses the smallest possible dishes for mixing or dipping. If I did that, there would be more food on the floor or table than in the pan. Lol! Later in the vid, even she put the flour on a plate instead of in a small bowl. Good.
I am definately going to try this! My mom used to make tuna cakes with canned tuna and leftover mashed potatoes. I bet your recipe is stunning! Gotta find onion pickle too!

My mother was from Weybridge (Foster's Point). She could turn any canned meat into a delicious meat cake. We were poor, it was our steak. Your corned beef cakes look great. Love your accent, reminds me of my sweet mother.
Oh my how sweet of you, having the ability to make something amazing from a can of meat and have your family enjoy it is a gift. Your mom sounds like she was a lovely lady and what lovely memories you have. Having the basic in life don't always mean we are poor it means we are blessed to have to knowledge to excel in life and not need the sun, moon and stars to be content. I came from a small fishing and farming community and only had the basic's growing up, but sometimes I look back at it and say did I have the basic's or was I blessed to have had a strong family upbringing. I tried making these last night, and while they tasted fantastic, I made a couple of mistakes:
a) I should have worked with room temperature or chilled potato as the patties were too warm, loose and dipping them into the egg wash and flour made me think of playing with mud pies when I was a kid. They did make it into the frying pan... :D
b) I did saute the onions, and added in some garlic as well, but I could have taken them a bit further as the onion was a bit crunchier than I was expecting, and once mixed into the corned beef and potato, they don't really cook any further...
I had a bit of fun making it, and have plenty of leftovers for lunch. Thanks for sharing the recipe!

I have loved this recipe since I first made it. However, I struggled with the cakes holding together and browning enough. The challenges were in using rice flour and Yukon Gold potatoes due to food allergies. The solutions were actually simple once I stumbled on them. The rice flour just needed a bit longer than three minutes to brown. The issue with the yellow potatoes was that they are a lower starch variety, so they didn't have the binding power of a russet. I found that mashing them longer causes them to become stickier at a certain point. You can feel the change when it happens. With these small tweeks I have Bonita's perfect Corned Beef Cakes! Thanks so much for your videos! They have enriched my life as well as my diet!
Gosh, dems looks good! I aint never seen nothing like dat in Cambridge.

Always fun to have a new cultural experience through food.
We used to use a little bit of mustard too.
I've never had it with mustard I must try it. Thanks Bonita

Thank you Bonita so much for sharing. My son who is 33 asked about Corned Beef the other day. My friend told him 'you don't want that it's gross!' I would have tended to agree, just going by the looks of it. But now after seeing you make this recipe and how delicious they look, I am seriously going to need to try making these! Who would have known without your video!

This looks like my tea is sorted for tomorrow night! Thanks. Where’s your accent from, BTW? I hear Irish, also Canadian. 🤷🏻♂️
That is wonderful and thank you for stopping by, my accent is both I'm from Newfoundland, Canada with our ancestors from Ireland, so we have a very strong accent. :) Thank you and enjoy our recipe. Bonita
Rob, Newfoundland remains the Second Ireland. I'm not sure you will hear a stronger Irish accent, outside of Ireland itself, in any other part of North America outside of here. I'm from rural Newfoundland myself, living in St. John's for over, 30 odd, years now, and people still, can't quite, place my accent. Of course, I don't think I have a accent myself, but it seems to be strong with some people I speak to. As my last name should suggest, I'm descended from either Welsh or Irish Ancestry, haven't yet, pinpointed exactly, where, but edging with Ireland actually, and have been in Newfoundland some 200 years now. Our family goes back, roughly, seven generations here, which works out to be around, 200 years. But I think that's true for most Newfoundlanders of Irish descent.
I hope some day, somebody will make a documentary about this, as I think people on both sides of the pond will find it highly, interesting.
My Best. Out.
That's a West Country English accent, dropped aitches and all. Nothing like Irish (I'm Irish)
@@roywalker1598 See how sweet that is, thank you so much for stopping by and enjoying our channel and of course leaving a message :) Bonita
@@bonitaskitchen ive found out something interesting im not an irish language speaker at all. irish has it own name for nwwfoundland as the land of fish
It looks yummy
I would serve it with a green salad for a meal
I usually keep one of those corned beef keys in the kitchen, because sometimes you don't notice until you get home that the key is missing off the tin.
That is the best advice ever, that have happened to me and I had to use a pair of pliers. The extra key in the kitchen makes good sense. Thank you for your message and for stopping by. We love these little corned beef cakes, enjoy. :) Bonita
Sounds just like when I was a kid back on the farm in Indiana... SPAM had the same type of key. Lmao...i would keep a few used keys in a Dixie Cup in a drawer in an old wash stand. Sure enough, every once in a while, we ended up with a can of SPAM...and no key. Saved my Mom quite a few times. Thanks for sharing 😎
Then you use a can opener...😯
I was so happy to see you change to a plate for the flour rather than the small bowl you started with. I will often make something similar to these using leftover freshly cooked corned beef, several types of peppers along with the caramelized onion and additional spices.
haha the love of youtube or TV, I started with a bowl and I don't know why. This recipe is easy to make and tasty. thank you for sharing your recipe with us and it sounds lovely. :) Bonita
Just curious if the same or close to same results could be had if using canned corned beef hash
It was canned corned beef she showed opening the tin early in the video
@@mattwilson690 canned corn beef HASH. Adjust accordingly.
Just made these for supper with some corn on the cob absolutely delicious
Nice! Thank you for letting me know and for making our recipe. It's always so lovely to get a message letting us know. :) Bonita
What on earth is in the spice "savoury". Never heard of it before, I'll need to do a Google search.
In Nova Scotia, they call it Summer Savoury. It works very well in a turkey stuffing. Every spice cupboard should have a jar of savoury.
I looked it up too. You can substitute thyme or sage for it.
I grow summer, and winter, savory in my gardens.
Thank you. My wife made these for me today. She followed your method exactly. They were delicious!
That is so lovely and I'm glad you and your wife enjoyed them, they are so easy to make and tasty. Thank you for letting me know and for enjoying our channel, we so appreciate your support. :) Bonita
