  • Story and review of Wayne Shorter's debut on Blue Note and the first of his eleven albums for that label, with a killer lineup that includes Elvin Jones on drums, McCoy Tyner on piano, Reggie Workman on bass and the horn of Lee Morgan. A prime slab of jazz vinyl with all tracks composed by Shorter. 5 out of 5 stars.

Just got a copy of the Classic Vinyl reissue this past weekend, which sounds awesome (and doesn't have the stupidly huge spine like the Tone Poet series). I'm finally starting to get into the groove with Wayne Shorter, some of his stuff isn't for me but Night Dreamer definitely is

Great reviewAllan. Really enjoy the format too. I didn't know the Vee-Jay history so that was interesting. Looking forward to a Herbie Nichols review.....??

Herbie Nichols, not sure I’ve ever listened to him. Will have to explore. What do you recommend?

@@TenMinuteRecordReviews OH! You must get the brand new Herbie Nichols Blue Note reissue that just came out: The Prophetic Herbie Nichols Vols 1 and 2 (it’s one LP combining two 10” releases from 1955). It’s a piano trio with Art Blakey on drums, and he plays in a Monk-ish style.

@@xentakis exactly! This classic re issue was such a surprise but very welcome. These sessions have been languishing in the vaults for far too long. Maybe not everybody’s taste but neither is Monk . As Allan would say ‘for me this is 5/5.

@@andrewmacdonald9382 Also, I've heard that the Herbie Nichols Trio album on Blue Note from 1956 is slotted for a Tone Poet reissue, but it could take quite a while before that comes out.

Personally I’ve always been a fan of Speak No Evil. But you really can’t go wrong with any of them.

@@TenMinuteRecordReviews I agree, Speak No Evil is my favorite too (I’m very familiar with all of them, was just curious what you thought).
