Making composites look right by visually matching RGB values in After Effects

  • In After Effects you can set your comp viewer to isolate the Red, Green, and Blue channels one at a time. This is very helpful when trying to match the color balance of plates in a composite. This viewing mode can enable you to make precision adjustments to each color channel with the Levels or Curves effect.
In visual effects you often encounter plates shot separately (background matte images, green screen footage, etc), that need to be composited together. One of the fundamental challenges is making sure the colors match between plates. Dialing that in can be tricky, even for someone with a trained eye. This technique helps tremendously when precision is critical. And it makes color compositing possible for colorblind artists.

This is a really unique approach to color correction. I've never seen this method in other tutorials, even in similar softwares like Photoshop (they usually use the curves editor). Thanks!

This method is very general for nuke or fusion. Just impressed after effects can do it similar.

God bless the UA-cam recommended, i would only match the bg plate & object plate using levels (blacks & whites), gonna try this method to match all rgb channels. Thanks for the awesome post!
