Amen to that! And her mother in law and family have welcomed her so thoroughly into the family. It encourages my heart to see these blessings. Thank you so much!
This film is a treasure, story telling, images of childhood being nurtured by family while keeping a tradition that bonds people . I love your Children’s grandmother.
Your mother in law brings tears to my eyes. She is so soft and beautiful. Her eyes and her voice, are so gentle. Your family is lovely. Thank you for letting us see a peek of your life, it seems you are very blessed ☺️
Being a 3rd generation of overseas Chinese, it is soo overwhelming and heart warming to get back into touch with my roots and tradition. Even the yeast comes in a packet and to see this being done from scratch is so touching. Thank u so MUCH and please continue to do the same. So special...and it won't be that special, if we have it everyday, would it??
What a wonderful tribute to your in-laws by documenting their hard work to preserve special traditional foods. Please say hi to them from the Northwoods of Wisconsin, the coldest place in America!
Can we also talk about the soothing voice of Aunty?! Wow she is much like my Mother, soft-spoken, intellectual, traditional and kind. What a motherly figure, she is!!! I think for a woman, a kind mother-in-law is a gift from God and Mariam has been blessed by God.
This is one of the most meditative videos I've ever seen. I'm flooded with melancholy for a place I'd never been to, memory of a tradition that is both familiar and different than the one I grew up with in the Cantonese south. Beautiful beyond words
I had a similar experience. I think we don't appreciate our traditions until we're away from them. Now I'm trying to catch up on years of traditions I used to take for granted 😁
Very true, and I think it applies to culture in general - moving to China I also got more interested in Swedish folk music, Swedish history , myths, etc., on top of our traditions.

Oh so true. I moved to California over 40 years ago and miss my Dutch traditions. More as I got older. That might have something to do with nostalgia for the past. Such a sweet mother in law ! Such an important part of your life Miriam. I had a similar connection with my Dutch/Hungarian mother in law. Even though she has long passed I still feel her inspiring me. With such gratitude ! Blessings to you both and of course to your lovely family ! 💕🌷
Miriam, you should enter your film in Short Film/Documentary category at either Sundance Festival in US, or Cannes or similar in Europe. It's beautifully done. You will no doubt win awards in the future. It would help your family too. Think about it. :)
Wow, Miriam is a talented film maker. The entire process of the festival and the warmth of positive human relations are everywhere. The story telling is very clear. Nobody in China has ever documented how rural Han farmers in Qinghai celebrate the traditional Moon Festival. The traditions differ from region to regions, and many are vanishing fast. This makes this video of Miriam invaluable!
What a beautiful video! It made me so emotional. The beautiful smile of your mother in law, the tradition, the narration so warm and welcoming. The world needs more of this right now ❤
So good to see you back on the screen Mima with your wonderful Chinese Family....Grandma certainly works incredibly hard to make the Autumn Moon Festival special with all the amazing Food she makes and cooks. I loved the story about WHY there is ALWAYS a SNAKE on one of the Mooncakes...these stories make Tradition. A wonderful film Mima...Thank you❤
This was my favourite video of yours so far!!! Your mother in law is amazing! Although I am from a completely different backround (I am from Cyprus, a small island in the Mediterranean) she reminded me so much of my mother and aunties when they bake for different kind of holidays and made me feel reminiscent. She has a very kind and mesmerising soul! Please give her my love and appreciation!
This is an amazing video, truly one of your best! Thank you for sharing something that touches the heart and feeds the soul, and resonates with all the things I value in my life. It makes me happy for many reasons, not least of which is to see inter-cultural acceptance.
I think she looks so wise. Traditions are something that people enjoy no matter what culture are you from. She should make a book about all the recipes, natural plants and care customs she has gathered over all her life.
China is soooo big, the traditions everywhere are so different, I’ve never seen this typ of moon cakes before, such a eye opening. Beautiful video,Mama is such a warm and loving lady. Wish all the best for your lovely family ❤
I miss my childhood celebrating every festival with my family. Since I had my children , I have never stopped the traditional. I visited my parents and my husband’s parents. Actually I celebrated twice in every festival. I hoped my son would have a good memory as me. My parents they were all passed away. I divorced and my son stayed with me. Now he grew up and got married. He lived with his mother-in law. I live alone. No one celebrates with me in any festival’s day. I always felt sad in the big festival day, very bad mood, missing my parents and even crying. I hope all the people will care ur family especially in the big festival.
What a beautifully crafted video, Miriam. It was both informational and touching...and your mother-in-law's narration was warm and caring. You've developed such a personal style of filming now, and it works so very well with your gift of storytelling. I look forward to every new video you make, and it's so great that you're back in China. There is so much that you can share with those of us who will never visit such a place. It's such a blessing for me (us) that you can give such an intimate peek inside this culture. Thank you for sharing what you are observing and learning . Sharon, from North Carolina ❤️
*THANK-YOU MIRIAM!!* This was amazing!! The story, the filming, the narrative, the insightful thoughts, the family connections, your MIL's 'seemingly effortless' cooking skills honed by years of hands-on experience - not only her own, but of past generations! Just fantastic - and I watched it here in Australia, when the moon was full, in our Autum - making this all the more special for me. Again THANK-YOU!!
So wonderful to witness all the care and love your mother in law put preparing the moon cakes and a super heartwarming end with the little thieves coming to take them :) you are a great story teller! Thank you for sharing this tradition with us!
Yong’s mom is Mother in Law we all need to be, so thoughtful, tender & loving. She also carries the legacy of her mooncake of her late mom, and hopefully the next generation will continue to pass it on. Love this vid so much, so lovely to see a celebration of tradition from a warm family 🥰
If only we have more people like you in this world. Hate never got the human race anywhere, cultures/traditions are different, but the same from the heart. Love the variety.
Your reflection on tradition is so beautifully put into words. "In a world that changes fast, it is a treat in itself to have traditions. To have days where we all know what to do. These traditions even the children know, and their experience is more or less the same experience we had their age. Tradition ties us together." As a young mother myself, I also more greatly value tradition and hope that it provides, as you said, memories, future nostalgia, safety, and something to rely on because, no matter how much the world changes, some things stay the same.
What a lovely tradition. The moon cakes are beautiful. I have also realized as I became older that I now cherish traditions that I once ignored. Thank you for sharing your family with us.
@@MiriamFollin Age and having a close relationship with people that you want to make and share memories with. For me, traditions are a way of sharing a collective memory. Traditions can be so helpful in keeping people that are no longer with us in our hearts and minds. I did not know about the 'stealing mooncakes' part of the tradition until your video. We're coming up to Halloween in the US and it makes me think of children trick-or-treating.🌛🎃
What a wonderful documentary. It’s particularly interesting to see regional variation in Chinese culture. The snake on the mooncake. Such a cute story.

I just had a very, very tiring week, and this video instantly calmed me down and gave me such peace of mind. It makes me miss a China I would have loved to experience back when I lived there... and also makes me want to live a simple life, surrounded by love, nature and traditions, like you do. Thank you for you work Miriam, and for letting me experience the beautiful rural China through your videos!! 祝你们全家中秋节快乐!!
Hello Miriam, your videos so touch my heart. I’m from Slovenia and my husband is Chinese born in Taiwan. We live in Australia and have two lovely children now grown up. Life certainly can be challenging coming from different cultures however keeping an open mind, always curious and ready to explore and you will be blessed many times over. This year after many years..was the first year I dared to make Chinese New Year cake ( Nian Gao) by myself and to my shock it got a big thumbs up. So continue being curious, brave and explore what life offers. Wishing you and your lovely family much happiness. ❤❤❤❤
This is such a lovely video. I've lived in Shanghai for the last 5 years but this is the 1st time I've seen the real cultural traditions of the moon festival. Bless your family for sharing this with us 🙂
First of all - I am now so hungry! I would love nothing more than to join your family for all of the amazing meals your mother-in-law and you prepare. Second - a beautiful and beautifully narrated documentary and tribute to this and other traditions. What a lovely family. And those mooncakes were labor intensive and beautiful. Please tell your mother-in-law that I too taste as I go and end up full before the meal :)
Wonderful that we have a vlog from you Miriam, and to your usual high standard. I enjoy seeing all of your relatives and the family of your husband are really special . Thanks for sharing , looking forward to your next.
My family is a mix, a hybrid like yours, but we are far away from elders and the traditions. We wanted to create a life in the same vein as yours, but whatever we did it did not work. Now kids are grown and we are a mishmash of values. Take care, stay committed, cultivate and nurture your community and grow your roots deep! Thank you and blessings on your journey!
I'm sorry to hear it didn't end up being the life you wanted! But I hope you are not too hard on yourself - our life look wonderful in videos, but we struggle too, with values, cultures, language... It's not easy! I think community is such an important aspect, and something that we lack.
Miriam, I am in awe of what you have documented and the beautiful way you have shared it. I can imagine the challenges and wish for happiness and health for you and your family.
I was fascinated by this video. Even though i think is a lot of work like making the flour, i like and respect tradition. Plus you definitely know what is going in your food! I really like Miriams m/law, she is a good artist, she talks so quiet and calmly. I cannot imagine her getting angry at anyone, not her children when they were little even.
Miriam, you are a fantastic writer and a narrator!! Your photography is so well done that narration is not needed to understand the content. This in itself is exceptional!! Thank you so much Mirian for sharing your Chinese traditions with us of the moon cake. I loved this video thank you so much for sharing this special occasion with us. Its lovely to see the love and respect you have for each other ❤️🧡💛🤎
Same in my international couple. Great husband has great parents 😁👍! So much joy all the way ! I love your videos and watching your beautiful family journey ❣️
What a comforting thought to know that while around the world our traditions may be different, those precious family relationships and roles are the same. Watching your mother-in-law making the mooncakes and bread, with you and the children at her side, chatting, learning and helping, reminds me of those times in the kitchen with my own mother, doing the Christmas baking, both as a child then years later with the grandchildren. Those traditions, those delicious smells, those gentle loving conversations with our elders. As you say, when other things outside in the world are chaotic and ever-changing, those family traditions provide a sense of stability and safety. A cocoon of love and wonder, especially for the children. Your father and mother-law are beautiful souls. How blessed your children are to have them in their lives. Making great memories. Though it is clearly challenging, you have done a great job of making sure your children maintain close loving bonds with both sets of grandparents. Bravo! Lovely video. Thank you.
Hello from North scotland. I loved this film. It took me on a journey. I loved the traditions you shared. The bread looked incredible. The going door to door reminded me of guising ( scottish trick or treat)
Miriam, your voice that full of sincere and positive feeling about all things around you, what you see and appreciate, and the people with whom you interacted deeply touched me. Your two lovely kids, intelligent and inquisitive, are always happy. I just recently started watching your video intensively. It’s been such an enriching experience to me. Marrying to a decent person like Yonghong is so invaluable to the life of you and kids. Thanks for sharing.
A wonderful video. Your comments on the traditions and how important they are for children and families are absolutely correct. It is heartwarming how your mother-in-law takes care of everything and passes on her knowledge to you. Precisely because culture, language and traditions are so important, we all have a responsibility to work to ensure that all cultures and ways of life are accepted and promoted wherever we live.
A big THANK YOU to the whole family! For your time doing these videos and sharing them with us. I really appreciate you! So precious insights! Greetings to China from Slovenia♥️

Thank you.
Miriam, you are an artist and ambassador - thank you for integrating both so beautifully.
Sincere love will make anyone stronger, in this case Miriam with her sincere and noble love like pure gold… Salute and God bless you all.. 🙏🙏
I love, love, love your beautiful and wise videos from your Chinese and Swedish families. Please show us more again. 🥰
You have the world’s best mother in law you are so fortunate!!
I am!
A big THANK YOU to the whole family! For your time doing these videos and sharing them with us. I really appreciate you! So precious insights! Greetings to China from Slovenia♥️
