Why are people shocked that this bridge collapsed? The force of the cargo ship colliding with the support was tremendous. I guess a lot of people either didn’t take physics in school or forgot what they learned. A ship weighing in excess of 100,000 tons won’t stop that easy. It isn’t exactly an “unstoppable” object, but the bridge wasn’t an “unmovable” object either. Once that support was taken out, there was nothing supporting the mass of the center span and the extra stress caused the other sections to collapse as well.

modern bridges have mitgations for ship collisions that this one obviously never got, for cost reasons or whatever

I truly can't tell if people are trolling when they blame the bridge design... sadly I think they are serious 🤦‍♂️

It's both! This bridge has no type of bumpers or anything to slow down or soften the blow of impact. Look at other bridges. They aren't trolling. There's just a lot of people who don't have a clue or know little. Everyone wants to be an expert.

The kinetic energy of a fully laden container ship traveling at 8 knots is more than double the energy of an a320 aircraft flying at cruising speed. It’s a powerful force!

Hmm im glad they brought an expert that easily explained how the bridge fell in a very difficult to understand accent a 5 year old would’ve been just as affective

Height and weight limit to pass under the bridge ...not sure but can be reviewed for future precautions...

he got a point .. why such large heavy ships could be allowed to risk crossing this good old bridge! and without TUG boats!! You Can't remove the bridge but I think they could have moved the port! my deepest condolonses to the families of those who lost thier lives.

Another factor: Was the bridge given proper maintenance? A bridge this old will suffer from corrosion and metal fatigue, which is also a factor in the collapse.

If it was brand new it still would have collapsed

It was inspected in 2022, and found to be in "fair" condition.

You would not find any difference in the result even if the bridge had just been built. A smaller ship than the Dali could still easily cause this type of catastrophe, with the same trajectory.

Why they don't protect the bridge supports any better is beyond me.

How? With what? it would have to withstand a gigantic force it hit at any speed....

Casons that go to riverbed , something to withstand a gigantic force if hit at low speed as is typical under bridges or in port. @@gomez2724

So after decades of engineering experience, bridge building experience, ship building, etc - your experience has been exceeded in this case?
You just have to be ashamed.

I lived in both sides of thud Bridge and gave been over the bridge more then 5k times.
    I have 2 questions
    1. There are no pot holes on this part of the expansion of the bridge I crossed this bridge everyday for over 20+ years sometimes 3 an 4 times a day the only pot holes in thus bridge are on the each side whete it is still standing. So what's the reason for the horrible lies that the brawner construction was filling pot holes. Again there is no pot holes on this bridge but at the bottom of the side and the bottom of the west side so what was brawner construction doing on the bridge cause it was not filling pot holes.
    2. Why In the name of jesus was this bridge fixed as the pillar the ship hit was failing an needed repair and tge united states just passed a infrastructure bill to fix an repair its roadways and maryland department of transportation said it was too expensive to repair and it was to expensive to install bumpers in front of each pillar of the expansion pillars so that any ship passing through or under the bridge would happen to loose power or an engine it would have a 15ft by 20ft concrete bumper so that the ships woukd hit the solid concrete bumper an not the pillars that hold it up?
This is a lack of the united states passing bills and not using tge funds for war they were passed for an lack of co concern for the American people that travel over these bridges everyday. Our infrastructure is failing an we would rather let innocent Americans loose thier life before fixing our country. It's sad it shouldn't have happened. Also we're dose the billions of dollars these tolls collect each year an millions each month go! Tget dint go to the bridges tunnels and roadways. As Americans we been to unite and make sure our tax money is goin to what they are meant for or get these politicians that pocket the billions and put them in jail N throw the key away set an example so tragedy like thus don't happen . Let's be maryland strong since this could have happened to us in maryland and join together an have all ez pass fines an tolls thar are unpaid completely erased out of the system an lower tolls so that the money starts goin where it belongs.

What they should have done was held traffic every time a large vessel was scheduled to pass under the bridge if it was that weak.

The new bridge will be built out of rubber bands in case it’s hit by another boat. It’ll just stretch and snap right back into place thank you sir.😮

Do we really have to have an engineer explain why a bridge collapsed....do you think people are stupid....most engineers I know couldn't sharpen a pencil

@Side eye. If all this money was not being given away to Ukraine and Israel, better structure could be built in the US. Even the houses they have been building up the last 20 years, a mere box with fancy siding, in fake subdivisions, these house Spirit said in the near future people living in these cheap houses they throw up in a couple months, which probably cost about 10 grand to make, and they want over 3 to 5 hundred thousand for them, with no backyard. The people in those houses will have black mold of the lungs, when the rain and inclement weather begin to rot the "foundation", folks will not be able to sue as the "contractors" will run off to other countries to avoid the avalanche of lawsuits, so everyone will declare bankruptcy. I am amazed the government is allowing this in every city across America, everything from "apartment" complex, to "subdivisions with fake fancy looking houses" while money is given away to fight wars, when humanity should have evolved beyond wars they have been waging for centuries, you would think these "men" have learned the fine are of "go sit yo a** down somewhere".
