- Video shows the moment a large container ship collides with Baltimore's Francis Scott Key bridge overnight Tuesday, March 26, 2024. The ship hit the bridge, which carries Interstate 695 across the Patapsco River at the Port of Baltimore, at a support pier. There were cars on the bridge at the time of the collision and collapse.

He was taking his time too.. Probably looking at the ship wondering about it.

Kudos to the police for getting the bridge closed before the collapse. They did not have lots of time to get it closed.
I am amazed at how easily the structure of this bridge crumbles.
Designed more for a load that presses down on it, not hitting it from the side. And keep in mind the ridiculous weight of that ship.
It’s not like it was hit by a car. It was struck by an object that is basically as big and heavy as another bridge

How is it possible that the Port Authority of Baltimore allows a 300 meter long ship carrying more than 10,000 containers to sail without tugboats with the obstacle of a bridge built and designed for ships to pass through in the 70s? >>>> Here you can see how from the port of Mugardos (SPAIN) where I work, a gas carrier with a capacity of 150,000 cubic meters and 300 meters in length is supported at all times by 4 tugboats from more than 4 nautical miles at least to access an estuary whose narrowest point of the channel measures the same as the span of the Baltimore Bridge through which the container ship crossed. It's not a question of money, it's a question of something simpler: SECURITY. And this is how we do it in Spain -> ua-cam.com/video/p1nlAoFBWWw/v-deo.html

I was thinking the same thing. Could be deliberate. You never know. Remember how at first everyone thought the plane hitting the WTC on September 11th was an accident or pilot error?
The power in the ship was flashing on and off but when the power was on they were trying to turn away.
Jh-ms3ny I know if you lose power the engine would not smoke but yet when "it lost power" the engine was still smoking
They lost power, they couldn't turn anything.
They did.
weren't the columns of the bridge protected against impacts? A few months ago there was a similar incident in Argentina, Parana river, one of the largest rivers in the world. A big cargo lost power and was carried by the current directly to one of the columns of the huge and busy Zarate-Brazo Largo bridge (made of concrete). But the columns are surrounded by massive concrete protections, so the ship finally hit one of these protections, opening a hole on the bow, but the bridge was safe
it was planned most likely. it’s america who knows
Any witnesses of how Loud this impact and the crash of the bridge was? All these videos have no audio so it’s hard to grasp.
Oh the humanity 😢
Just hearing the stories you wonder how this was possible, then you see the size of the ship relative to the size of the bridge.
You would think there would be bumpers so the support collum can never be hit by a boat. Seems like something that should have been thought of while building the bridge.
@@GQ1921 There were. They weren't going to stop a container ship that size.

I see a new rules coming for container shipping in the near future. No unescorted ships leaving harbor past critical infrastructure.
@oldschoolman1444: You're talking about having tugboats help guide the monster ships past all bridges and other boats aren't you ??
We have had too many bridges put out of commission by wayward ships !!!!
That’s unrealistic
They were escorted, local pilots had control of the ship
The cost of everything will go up if they do that. It's better to just build a bridge that has protection and is segmented into survivable sections.
The bridge collapsed in less than 30 seconds.
Praying for the lives of those who were crossing over the bridge when it collapsed. 🙏😥
what will praying do? There are 99 fatalities every day from traffis accidents/day in the US.
no one was crossing at the time of collapse, they had just shut it down on both sides. The people that are missing were workers on the bridge doing repairs. Look closely at all of the lights on the bridge.
@@heyyo162There’s nothing wrong with praying for the lives that were lost, party pooper. This is more than just some “traffic” accident. It’s not every day that people lose their lives due to a bridge collapsing. 🙄
Those container ships can do a lot of damage, especially when loaded with cargo containers, but it seems like poor bridge design when hitting one support point collapses the entire bridge so easily. It wouldn't hurt to have some sort of underwater barriers on both sides that prevent large vessels from approaching the bridge except in the area meant to be used to pass under the bridge would prevent the bridge from being hit. The point where ships pass under the bridge could have bumper barriers that would prevent ships from straying side to side and clipping one of the supports as it passes through. Also, a warning system that would alert the ship's captain and crew, and another warning system for the traffic on the bridge that would allow them sufficient time to get off of the bridge would help towards preventing loss of life.
What heck wow this is so crazy!
At least the bridge wasnt packed with cars
The idea that you can just switch "the power" on and off like flicking a switch is pretty funny.
Also the idea that the lights are on the same circuit as the control gear is pretty funny.
If the generators really went offline (all of them, simultaneously, despite being separate units powered by separate engines 😂) it would take a considerable time to restore power.
Sure seemed to me that the ship drove past the bridge then hit full reverse, hence black smoke, then smacked into the bridge... Just looks that way from here... what do i know? not much...

@@DonaldWatkinsIII it's crazy to me that people think the ship went past the bridge.
Like I never realized that many people have that hard of time determining scale and distance. Not to mention the fact that even assuming a ship like that could back up in 3 seconds shows that everyone who thinks it reversed has no idea about even basic physics or how boats work
@@KappaKiller108 Thank you.

It may be just the way it happened, but that ship clearly appears to turn sharply to the left before hitting the bridge.
Likely due to the port anchor dropped in an attempt to turn the ship toward the middle of the channel and avoid hitting the support piers. Too little, too late.

Why doesn't the bridge have a stone base on the main columns?

Doesn't matter that ship was moving FAST. Cargo ships are HUGE.
@@user-fm4cg3mp1c Yes, no matter how strong the stone base was, the shock from the impact energy from that mass and velocity of that ship would have caused steel to buckle and part.
It did. Small ones. If you look carefully, you can see the bow of the ship impacting them (look starboard on the bow, near water line) and just utterly pulverizing them, then moving right through b4 hitting the main support pier. There was also apparently a small support pier for an electric transmission line paralleling the bridge that the ship plowed through b4 hitting the bridge pier. 100,000 tons moving 10 knots is a lot of energy.
A mayday call and in 4 min they were able to call the authorities .. they dispatch officers to close both sides of bridge.. police drive and successfuly stop anymore traffic to enter both sides in less then 4 mins.. ??
They didn't have to send officers very far at all.
Remember those construction workers who died, working on potholes? You see the flashing orange lights of their vehicles near one of the pillars?
When construction takes up a lane of the road, transit cops enforce a speed restriction for safety.
So there was already a transit police unit at each end of the bridge. So... not really surprising that they could quickly stop more vehicles from entering the bridge.

Why in the world, was a tug boat or two not assigned to a ship going into port?
Looks like it might be deliberate
Looks like it was leaving port, just doesn't make any logical sense
It had left port and had already separated from its tugboats as it was in an established shipping channel and underway.
I have watched this one semi crossing the bridge just seconds before the collapse...lucky guy
If it was an 0:47 accident it would be involuntary manslaughter. Why were they not arrested? the pilot and the captain.?
No charges or arrests are made until an investigation is conducted and completed.
Oh Man. The ship is broken the bridge.
Seems like it fell apart very fast..
It had help. Play at .25 speed at 2:27. Watch for all the mini explosions around the right concrete pier. No way they are electrical arcing, the circuit was open the second the first cable broke.
Why did that freighter open up the throttles as it approached the bridge ? You can clearly see the black exhaust pouring out of the stacks....
Throwing it in reverse? The speed dropped from 8.7kts to 7.5kts, so it wasn't full throttle _ahead_ . Plus, they dropped the port anchor, which would be consistent with trying to stop the yaw to starboard.
My question is why did the other side of the bridge fall? I get the bridge collapsing where it hit but why did the entire thing fall
It was a continuous truss design, not a cantilever. The load of the road deck was spread across multiple spans, and with one span removed, the others were unbalanced.
Basic physics. Hold out your finger, take a ruler, and place it on your finger so the middle of the rule is on your finger. Notice how it's balanced. Now move it so your finger 90% of the way over to one side. Notice how it falls off. That's the basic principle here.
I wish the 8 workers who were on the bridge had noticed the ship bearing down on the bridge support, belching black smoke, and its power going out. They were on their break. Perhaps they were all taking a quick snooze?
They were probably in their vehicles, sitting down and staying warm while eating. There was only about 90 seconds warning, for the people who were actually monitoring water traffic.
Do you understand that they are all higher up than the ship, and over closer to the other pillar from their point of view it would just look like a ship going under the bridge, like it's supposed to do?
that things turns INTO the bridge
People need to wake up to what’s happening.
No it does not. It deviates slightly from the path it was supposed to take when you look at it from above. They have animations of that. It is just the angle of this video that makes it look that way.
How they let cargo ships go through that opening with no tugs is crazy. I know every time I have been in Charleston, SC port the ships are escorted by two tugs until they have cleared the Arthur Ravenel Jr. Bridge on the Cooper River. In the video this ship is putting out a good amount of smoke so the engines were running, but I guess they may have lost the ability to control the ship.
They lost engine power. We’re able to temporarily restore it and put the ship in full reverse, hence the smoke. Why would they use tugs. This is a wide open navigable waterway. What do you want them to do have every ship out of here escorted to open water with tugs. Do you have any idea how many tugs you would need to escort every ship in and out of Baltimore?

Looks like a pack of cards. American superior technology.
I guess you know nothing about suspension bridge design.
They need to build bridges that can continue to stand with 1 missing pillar.
Bridges built these days are engineered to minimise the damage resulting from such collision events. This bridge was constructed before those design elements were implemented and had not been upgraded to the revised engineering standards. However, there may have been systemic failures regarding the Ship's maintenance and crewing practices (e.g. well being, fatigue etc).
