It's a double edged sword. More notoriety attracts more candidates. 2 SEAL MOH recipients were inspired by Charlie Sheen to become SEALS. But on the other side, it attracts guys for the wrong reasons too.
As SEAL Jack Carr puts out, CBS's first version of Magnum PI, the Thomas Magnum SE Asia guy showed that. Magnum was a SEAL but it was more of a function not a career, not a rating like 2000s 2010s. Magnum went into ONI/MI & if I remember, at the end of the 8yr series choses to return to ONI-Navy. Be a O-5, Cdr.
Even in the eighties and the nineties, it was still that way- for the most part. You had some movies and books in the nineties but it was more sporadic. Now, in the age of the internet and social media, the SEAL Teams have all the notoriety and publicity with the books, movies, TV shows, video games and podcasts . It might be nice if the SEALs were more in the shadows like how they used to be( similar to how some Special Operations and Special Forces units of the militaries of other countries like the Polish Grom, the Russian Spetnaz and the Canadian Joint Task Force 2 are). But as others have said, the notoriety of the SEAL Teams is a double-edged sword and it has pros and cons.
on a slight tangent, I can relate. After the Gulf War, I was a landscaper through college and continued in the reserves. I was driven, became educated and went through Drill Sgt school in the reserves. I felt no need to become hyper or sell a persona to the public. I had a skill set, applied myself, and continued to improve. I am now retired with an advanced education and have an uncommon fitness level. It is about time invested.
Jack Carr is +. So his Denver Rourke. They do not seem like ribbon chasers or vet bro 🤩 clout guys. Im a veteran but not SOF. Some have no clue about Quiet Professionals.
I got to tell ya: when I saw the title of the video, and the host of it, I thought the wrong portrayal was going to be that everyone thinks the guest is what a Navy seal looks like, but it was really the guy running the channel who was the Navy seal in reality. Oh well! L O L.
He is so correct about the combat mind changing over to the family/ civilian mind. It’s not automatic. My first marriage was a victim of that
Yep. Roger that ....
My former boss. Good dude.
Not many knew about SEAL Teams 1 & 2 in Vietnam until after the end of the war.
