In some orthodontic treatment, rubber bands (also referred to as elastics) are used with clear aligners, including the Invisalign brand of appliance. It is often the case when we need to correct the bite from front to back.
In this video we explain how to place the rubber bands on your clear aligners correctly. Treatment time and success depends on patient cooperation with these kinds of details! Feel free to contact us at care.team@porth.io if you have any questions.

It’s not easy it’s hard AF!!! That’s why I’m on UA-cam searching for help
😁 you will get a hold of it quickly
Loooool
LITERALLY SAME! I sat in the ortho for 10 minutes trying to do it and she had to do it for me
I’m probably going to have to watch it daily til I get this right. This looks super easy compare to what my ortho showed me. First few times the rubber band snapped into my face haha.
Glad that this helps you. It will get easier as you wear these elastics with your aligners. Good luck with your treatment.
This was a lifesaver! Got my first set of invisalign today and was struggling and panicking when I couldn't figure out how to put in the elastics, but I finally got it because of your video! Thank you so much 😄
Glad to hear that. Good luck with your treatment
Thank you again!
This saved my life. The orthodontist said me , that I should hooked elastics while aligners are in my mounth and it was impossible for me. Just flying rubber bands all over my place and after half an hour of trying I've gave up. Then I found this video and were finaly able to put elastics in my mounth. So thank you very much for this video 😍
We are so happy to hear that this video helped. Monica is amazing!! Good luck with your treatment.
This helped a lot. Mines is slightly different than yours but what I found helps is to put the top one on as loosely as you can and then attach the rubber band and tighten the top one after the rubber band is on.
Yay! This was helpful
Ortho showed me how do put them on with pliers. I was like... do I also get the pliers to take home??? 🧐
Same!!! And i don’t have a little knob- i have two hooks. The ortho assistant snapped me in the mouth like 2 times trying to do it. Ugh!
How many time keep this in mouth per day
This is a blessing from God himself.
The rubber bands made things soooooo complicated
I've been doing invisalign for a year and a half now. I'm getting more trays. My bite is still off. we talked about elastics yesterday. This was helpful. Thank you 😊
Wow never thought of doing it this way. Doing this tomorrow
Finally did it with the help of this video. Not sure why info on this is so hard to find. The girl here has style and quirky mannerisms she probably would do well on social media.
She does 😁
Is still can’t do it
You saved my sanity last night at 11:30 trying to get my elastics on my new aligners. This is such a good technique I'm annoyed they didn't teach it at my orthodontist
so glad we were here to help! :)
Super helpful. I had buttons on the top and my lower canines but it rotated me canines so we stopped elastics and did a round without. Now I’m on my last round of Invisalign and I only have buttons on top and hooks on my bottom trays. It was so hard trying to loop in on the tray with it in my mouth. Definitely gunna try this 🤞🏽😄
Good luck with your treatment
the top one is what gets me
Monica?
Thank you! Very helpful! A much easier and less complicated way! Buttons on bottom for me
Thank you! I have an overbite so I think it’s a little different for me but I was able to reverse what you a did a little. Thank you so much I was really struggling!😁
Very helpful video for my son...Thanks
Thankk youuuu i was struggling so much to put them
This was a game changer! Thank you so much!
This worked without using elastic placer. 😍
Yes indeed
this helped a lot thankyou
Thanks! This was so helpful.
Omggg I thought I was the only one who did this
It is a very common feature of aligner treatment. We hope that you find the video useful.
Great video. Straight to the point. Helped me alot thank you
We are happy to hear that. Good luck with your treatment.
Thank you! This has been really helpful. 😊
Thank you
most helpful video to me! thank you! i was going banana trying to put on these rubber bands
Same here 😫
Thanks a lot. After 5 failed tests I was able to attach the rubber bands on the hooks properly. BTW it hurts 😭😭😭
The pain will get better over time. We are glad that the video helped you to figure out how to put the rubber band on your aligner.
Thank you for this the bottom is much harder to attach for me.
You could try one of these www.safcodental.com/catalog/orthodontics/elastomerics/elastic-placement-tool?ref=goadw&GSS_|_Orthodontics&keyword=&matchtype=&adposition=&gclid=Cj0KCQjwwuD7BRDBARIsAK_5YhWYDwUW_edFQWDfqnnaIhbasprUerRDIyD7QM6tLMeBgTY0yllMWi4aAqJCEALw_wcB
THANK YOU
Very helpful
Thank you
That's really good and all but did the dentist mention anything about proper tongue posture?
I've been using invisalign for as long as I can remember, and I've got a pretty good smile, at the cost of my face. I had robust cheekbones and more of a defined jawline, and now it's all saggy, long, and narrow. This really upsets me because why would I be paying a lot for a good smile while it ruins my face.
I guess it's either have proper tongue posture, and hope for the best now.
We are sorry to hear that you are experiencing changes in your face.
It is really hard for us to give you feedback since we don't have access to all your medical records. Please reach out to a local orthodontsit and discuss your concerns with them.
Good luck
Big time help
🙏
i always just hook the elastic onto the button and then onto the little hook thing on the tray while the trays are in mouth! obviously this would be a better method for those who get the rubber bands snapping back in their faces, lmao!
edit: 'by this method' is supposed to be referring to the video
I don’t have button like that and my bands keep coming out before I can loop them
Ask for these buttons 😃
Great if they attach to the aligner. Mine attach to buttons attached my teeth. I am close to giving up with them
Correct some aligner systems have the buttons
@@PersonalizedOrthodonticsI have Invisalign.
Does it matter if the rubber band is twisted a bit? Hard to get it to not be.
Thanks
This is very difficult. My doctor has placed buttons in the inside of my mouth apart from those on the top. Both of these have fallen off. Plus the elastics keep breaking. Thinking of discontinuing the treatment.
Correct, there is a leaning curve to it. Your provider should bound them back. It will get easier after a few weeks.
Ok but I have 4 rubber bands on each side that need to be crossed in a triangle formation. 16 attachments altogether. It’s driving me insane.
Wow I’m hoping you get thru it… I have 3 attachments on 1 and 4 on the other and just 1 elastic on each side connected to 2 hooks and it’s painful!!!!!!!!!
I've currently been wearing a clear Invisalign retainer these past few months (a little before summer started), as well as rubber band elastics, to correct my teeth before I start wearing proper Invisalign. The clear retainer is just for my bottom teeth - I have nothing like that on the upper teeth. The dentists said that by October, I'd be able to get rid of the rubber band elastics and start my Invisalign journey (with clear Invisalign retainers on both my bottom and top teeth). All I have to do from now until then is wear my retainer + rubber elastics only at night while I sleep. I'll have to do that for a little more than one month.
The only problem is, I lost my retainer yesterday. I've searched everywhere around the house, and I just can't find it! Honestly, I'm starting to get a bit scared.
Would I be able to just wear my elastics without the retainer? Or would it cause damage to my teeth? If so, what sort of damage would it do?
TLDR: I have to wear only bottom aligners and rubber bands while I sleep. I lost my bottom aligner though. Is it okay to just wear the rubber elastics while I sleep and that's it?
(ps let's say i lost my retainer for a month before i find it again. so 1 month)
No don't wear rubber bands without your retainer. Also call your orthodontsit 😁
@@PersonalizedOrthodontics alright thank you!!
Wait- you have buttons?! Lucky
Thank you so much! Also, can we tell how lovely you are xo
and you wear the rubber bands out in public. I thought invisalign was mean to be near invisible but the bands are really easy to see.
Totally agree on that nothing is perfect.
Difficult to do all that outside if the house in public
How do you stop the hook from cutting the inside of your mouth?
Dental wax and you will get used to it after a while.
@@PersonalizedOrthodontics Thank you!
If worn on only 1 side, could this change the midline on the upper? Or do elastics only change the bite?
Maybe there is more than just elastic to fix a midline
Omg tysm
How do you do this it’s so challenging! 😭 mine keeps falling off
It will get easier as you do it everyday. Stay with it and it will pay off. Good luck
@@PersonalizedOrthodontics I have 2 elastics one on the back of my teeth but when I try to do it it snaps immediately idk what’s the problem and yesterday I got them and when I arrived home they fell off and never wore them again because they keep falling off I tried attaching it for an hour but no use keeps on falling. Also I have another on the front it sticks but falls when I sleep
Talk to your provider they can use a lighter or different size elastic to make it easier
@@PersonalizedOrthodontics I’m using heavy elastics is it possible that he change them to medium without affecting the results and the final date?
Thank you! You just saved me
My doctor didnt explain to my what they do exactly he just said it will fix things
So may i ask what do they do exactly to fix the bite
And how ling should i keep them daily? Even while am sleep (am scared theyll snap and go to the wrong pipe lol)
And for how many month usually do they last?
These are fantastic questions. We can't really comment on that without clinically evaluate your bite. You should ask him again 😉
i have something similar to this but my rubber bands don’t “secure” to the bottom tray so every time i open my mouth, my bottom tray pops out which makes it very difficult for me to wear the elastics. what should i do??
You probably have a cut on your aligners to hook your rubber band to. Contact your doctor and let them know about this. There are solutions to fix that like adding an attachment around the cut to make the tray more retentive. We are sure that they will take care of you. Good luck.
@@PersonalizedOrthodontics thank you sooo much, what you’re describing sounds exactly like what i have. i will contact my orthodontist :) thanks for the help!
Do you keep the elastics on while eating or take them off?
No please don’t eat with your aligners
it was hell to put those bands in
😀
Yes but you didnt show how to take them off, thats harder for me opposed to putting them on
Good point. Basically the opposite of how you place them in.
Can be attach rubber band without aligner is it any danger???
No if you have two buttons on your teeth 😁
In the comment sections I see that a lot of people had to experience this torture daily
All orthodontic appliances need a little adjustment including rubber bands.
We created this video to help people smooth out the challenge you mentioned.
How many time to keep this band around teeth per day
22 hours a day is often the recommendation.
If I'm getting a clear band in the front, how visible will it be?
Depends on where the rubber band hook to the aligner in the front. Talk to your orthodontsit to see if they can move it back a little.
Also, depending on how wide your smile is, some patients shows more back teeth.
Good luck
@@PersonalizedOrthodontics Thanks! It's the 3rd tooth in my mouth, but I don't want it to be really obvious. Basically I'm considering Invisalign or a dental implant because I have an impacted tooth that needs to come down. But can the bands actually be clear (and not off white like I've seen)?
@@PersonalizedOrthodontics Oh, and I'd have a tooth colored one to fill that gap. Will it look natural or like I have a fake tooth?
@@shae279 there are lots of great choices for filling those gaps. Check this as one option orvance.com/product/aligner-pontics/
The bands are latex and have a tin of yellow in them.
It is hard to tell you what is the best option without clinical examination. I am sure that your orthodontsit will take care of all of this.
Won’t you swallow elastics when you sleep??
No
I should’ve got this instead of braces😭
Do you mind sharing why you wish you got aligners instead? I'm leaning towards getting aligners myself but always interested to hear other people's experiences 😊
@@oOLemonzOo its hard to eat with braces
@@erskinegama ahh okay, thanks for the reply!
@@oOLemonzOo don’t Jesus they hurt I got mine and it hurts so bad to take them out and back in
@@yonni4379 ah lame, how long have you had them for?
0/10 doesn’t work even in the mirror
What’s the use of the rubber bands on the Invisalign?
Helping correct the bite problems.
I give up I'm not putting my rubber bands on
😁 it will get easier
@@PersonalizedOrthodontics no thanks
Can all clear aligners do this???
Yes
@@PersonalizedOrthodonticsmine don’t have the hooks…
Can I add attachments
How much cost of that invisible brace ...???
The cost of treatment often tied to the complexity of the treatment and not the type of braces
Dental band;what size?
There are so many different sizes and forces. You should talk to your dental provider.
How long did your doctor recommended these rubber bands ?
Depends on your treatment. Most patients wear these all the time. Sometime we ask patients to wear them only at night.
@@PersonalizedOrthodontics also can you drink tea and wine with Invisalign on with a straw ?
@@GainsCity_ we don't recommend that to our patients because you can develop cavities on your teeth.
@@PersonalizedOrthodontics I understand. Thankyou for your response
Why do you have that elastic
To fix the bite and how the teeth come together
I finally got them in
And then the rubberbands ripped the bottom row out of my mouth 😭
Sometimes the buttons come off when you wear rubber band
How do you take it off ?
First the elastics and then the aligners. The best way is to remove the elastic from the front then from the hook in the back.
Porth - Personalized Orthodontics Thank you!!! I’m in so much pain trying to take them off I’ve been have breakdowns because of it 😂❤️
What?!?! I'm in idiot i tried doing it while it was in my mouth I didn't know you do it before
I was tought to put them on with trays in (today). 😅 Luckily I found this tip on day one
Reading the comments, i’m baffled by how many people have trouble with this
True that is why we have this tutorial 😁
I swallowed the band by accident
All good 😁
How much cost??
Sorry didn’t help!!!
Nice
She's cute as hell

Just do the how your doctor prescribed y'all. Lmao. Talk might end up breaking an aligner
