A board bow is a great way to fine tune your bow tillering. Low cost easily available hardwood boards allow you to experiment with bow designs that can be carried over to selfbows.

In the U.K. however, our big DIY stores stock really crap quality softwood and rarely if ever, do I see a store stocking better quality stuff. If anyone reading this lives in the U.K. and has successfully made a board bow from wood they have found in a DIY store, please comment and let me know where you got the wood from!

And I plan to start with lumber store boards like you did to learn on before moving on to nicer staves. I just wondered if you have had any problems with twisting of the Pyramid style bows. I saw a comment on another channel about that. But I suspected that it might have more to do with the moisture content of the wood than the style of bow. Just interested in your experience. No backing is required with this piece of wood. The grain is straight. Oak, Maple, Hickory as well as other woods don't require a Backing. I have a lot of bow content including Board Bow 2.0 my updated design.
I hear that I can get away with 1-2 grain run-offs if they're shallow. Is that true? I have a piece of oak that has this near the end and I'm wondering if it's fine to use or if I should bind it somehow. Also if the grain on my boards are a bit wavy, should I do my best to follow the pattern or just cut straight dimensions for the intended look? Good informative video, by the way! Do your best to get a board with no grain run out. 1 or 2 I would try it. I will be doing a bow backing video soon. A backing will cover for some grain run out. If you have a wide enough board follow the grain not the edge of the board. Good luck thanks for watching

Because when you are rough cutting and tillering you are basically cutting away part of the grain. There's only one or two maybe three grains running the whole length of the bow. Now I admit I have never made a bow like this, but I have worked in wood for over 45 years. I have bent oak and other hardwoods around a lot of shapes that wood just dont want to go around. I would not let a little run out of the grain stop me from building. The piece of oak you started with would cost around $60-$75 dollars at the big box stores.
@@williamcastleberry7338 Thanks for the comment. This board was from Home Depot and was about $12. I know lumber prices are out of wack but I have bought boards within the last 6 months. You can get by with a little grain runout but I will always choose the best board I can. If a had to use a questionable board, I would use a backing material. I will make a video on it in the future.
Congrats on a shooter! Shape of your fades risk popping off the riser piece. Fade should blend into the limb. Hope it stays together for ya and that ya get many many shots and much enjoyment from your bow.

That number 4 bench plane is no block plane....
How much wood removal on limbs relative to the bought board thickness, and length on limb?
Most of the time the bow starts bending around 1/2 inch. The thickness changes depending on the limb width

You could build a bow with that weight but good luck on shortening the bow to half its length.
