This house just keeps on giving. It will help many. Mark with the clothing and now he has to hire more employees so he is providing jobs for people. Hans & Zinovia who got some money for helping. Paul who helped Mark haul some clothing. The auction company who will get a cut of what Alex sells so they can continue to keep their employees working. Goodwill and other resale outlets who get money from their sales to help the needy. Josh who got some stuff to make art. And this is just the beginning. Alex had said that the lady who lived here was very civic minded and liked to help out her community. If she could see how her life's possessions are being dispersed I think she'd smile.

When my mother was still alive but had dementia, we went through her linen closet. It had always been tightly packed with towels, bed sheets and blankets. If anyone tried to get a towel out to take a shower they had to hold the stack with one hand and pull on the towel they wanted. So many towels and sheets for ONE woman.
As we pulled out the blankets from the bottom of the closet (we were sitting on the floor) we discovered my grandmother's quilts. I was in shock and delight. My grandmother and great grandmother had made the quilts many many MANY years ago during the winter when there was nothing to do in Alabama where they lived. Both women passed away long long ago. I couldn't believe my luck finding those precious quilts.
As we pulled out the quilts we also discovered embroidered things my grandmother had done. My eye noticed an old fabric pattern and I thought it was just a piece of fabric but it wasn't. My mother pulled it out and put it on her head. It was a bonnet my grandmother made for my mom when my mom was a young girl. Not a fancy bonnet but a head covering to wear when my mom worked in the fields. I took some photos of my mother wearing the bonnet. We also found my GRANDMOTHER'S bonnet too!!!! I couldn't believe it.
It was amazing that the two head coverings survived throughout all the years but my mom took good care of her things. My mother's short term memory was pretty much shot but her long term memory was excellent. We sat on the floor and my mom talked about being raised on a farm and how hard she and her brothers worked AS CHILDREN. I knew a little bit about her life growing up but not as much as she told me that day. Believe it or not, my mom remembered when her mother made those two bonnets. They were sewn on my grandma's treadle sewing machine.
Cherish the items your ancestors have passed down. Sadly I have no one to pass the quilts to even though I have two adult children, sisters and many nieces and nephews. We cut the ties years ago.

I am sure there would have been bidders on almost all of those linens in the closet. Also a lot of tin containers (paint, kitchen, etc.) seem to be heading to the trash as well as vintage cosmetic containers. I realize that everything can't make it to the auction, but a lot of saleable items seem to be heading to goodwill or the dump.

Just FYI, Poles celebrate both birthdays and name-days. Name-days are the more important celebration for older generation (e.g my grandma would have a big family get together on name-day and just get some flowers and maybe have some cake on birthday), and some might not celebrate birthdays at all.
Most people who have grown up in the 80s-90s celebrate both birthdays and name-days, and usually birthday is the bigger thing :)

I love that you gave your friends the money. They really deserve it. Great couple. How fun it is to watch this adventure. Also awesome you found the missing piece to guitar. That’s a lucky find too. Merry Christmas to you and your family,

Reminds me of when my grandma died. We had to search the dishes, drawers, socks, lamps, walls, plumbing, ceilings, freezer, you name it. She grew up in the depression, never trusted banks and was extremely frugal. Did her laundry in the kitchen sink. But she hid her money everywhere.
