I think this song is about an unstable dynamic between someone who is warm and emphatetic and their cold and distant partner/crush. The first one is trying to hold on to the second one and keep the relationship going in every possible way, despite the cold they receive in exchange (they are trying to "scrape the frosted windshield"), and they are so keen to save the relationship (even though the partner makes them feel sad and second guessing) that their hope magnifies any "gap in the ice" (which in reality is very little, as their chances to stay together). Having personally lived through this situation, I have to say that I've absolutely been hit by this song, and I love the melody too
