  • I get asked the questions: "I am new to UA-cam, where do I start?" or "Joe, what camera do you use and what do you suggest I use?" quite often. So here is a brief show and tell on what gear I use but more so, where I suggest folks start from a planning standpoint. Watch this video: Coming Soon for an in depth look at why I use the gear I use. Feel to ask me questions whether here, on Facebook ( / feralwoodcraft , or via email: joe@feralwoodcraft.com

    I think you do an excellent job of capturing the surrounding area and including your content. Your vids are very clear and well thought out. Give yourself more credit, you are interesting and professionally presented

      Thank you Sir, I do really appreciate. I was speaking moreso to the fact that there are whole companies out there dedicated to perfecting the UA-cam Creator thing. By definition, I am not an expert and I didn't want to seem like I was trying to put myself into a position of authority. If that makes sense. I truly appreciate your support!

    I didnt know mike used his cell phone. Im really happy with my camera. I dont really need a mic for it because of how sensitive it is. And yes winging a video is not what you wanna do. My videos are still cringy but not as much because i think about what im gonna say before i film.

    Great information. Thanks for sharing. The general public has no idea how difficult this UA-cam thing can be to pull off successfully. The struggle (for me at least) is real :) You are an inspiration for me to keep plugging away at it.

      Thanks man, I am glad it was helpful. And yes, the struggle is VERY real. But it is FUN! You can go as deep into this as a hobby/business as you want. I love it! And yeah, it definitely takes plugging away sometimes. Thanks for watching and the support, I appreciate it!

      Now Travis, if that is what you got out of this then you weren't listening my friend. I love your vids and i know a lot of folks that do too. Gear just makes some things easier but it's not what makes a good video. Thanks for watching my friend.

    Bypassing the battery packs with the ravpower is genius! I wonder if I can use that with my Cannon T6i, and my Sony camcorder. I think the camcorder will be the winner. Thanks for that tip!

    • @feralwoodcraft
      @feralwoodcraft  7 років тому +1

      +BlackRifle Survival I don't know about your Sony bug your t6i runs off 7.2 volts and the rav cannot directly supply that. I'm testing the reliability of adding a step up regulator and seeing how well it works though. If that doesn't pan out, I'm going to build a custom battery pack for my dslr. Both of which I'll be happy to share the plans for once I get the procedure nailed down.

    • @BlackRifleSurvival
      @BlackRifleSurvival 7 років тому +1

      Feral Woodcraft that would be excellent, yeah as each battery for the Cannon is near $50 dollars and not cost effective to get 30 minutes of film time. For picture taking its fine. But video is what kills my battery life. I have a Goal Zero Sherpa100 I might look at the specs and see if that would support it but the unit itself isn't exactly small, I was hoping to run a small battery bank instead. Back to the drawing board lol. I know there is a solution I just want it to be cheap and effective.

    • @feralwoodcraft
      @feralwoodcraft  7 років тому +1

      The problem with USB battery banks is that they typically push 5.5 volts (give or take a bit) and our DSLR's run off 7.2 volts (give or take a bit). Some ankers and ravpowers will push 7.5 (which will work), 9.5, and 12 volts but they are all "smart technology" as far as I can tell and will only push 5.5 unless the device "tells" the battery bank it needs another voltage. I either need to figure out a way to head fake the power banks or put a step up regulator inline with the camera. My main focus right now is making it safe for the camera. These things cost way too much to fry them while experimenting with them trying to save a buck. I'll keep you in the loop.

    Great topic Joe. I use a Sony JVC 60x, do not mind the camera but I do not like that I can not add an external mic.

    • @feralwoodcraft

      Thanks Lee. While my Canon does take an external mic, the voice recorder I mentioned is what I use for most of my audio. It's just a simple sync in post.

      Do you have to fight the wind with this set up?

    • @feralwoodcraft
      @feralwoodcraft  7 років тому +1

      Some but not nearly as much. If it's windy, I just tape the mic to my upper chest and go. My shirt(s) do a good job of killing wind noise.

    Nice video, thanks. I have checked out some of the links below... I am looking for a good quality mic that can fit inside a helmet. I have a new mic and a new helmet... but still the audio quality is very disappointing. Helmet is a new Strobe LS2, Mic is a Sony ECS SS3 Stereo Mic. I expected this would be good quality... but the wind noise in my vids is very off-putting....

    • @feralwoodcraft
      @feralwoodcraft  7 років тому +1

      I have that Sony mic and it is very susceptible to wind noise. The mic I linked in the description handles wind really well. That said, riding on a motorcycle you may have to put a wind muff on it. These are what I am talking about: amzn.to/2m5IPzs

    • @nzbeeker1
      @nzbeeker1 7 років тому

      thank you for that, we can't so easily order from amazon here in new zealand. I have wind socks on it, and have moved it to another location in my helmet. I have also ordered another type of mic...watch this space...

    No wonder my channel is lame.. I wing almost all my videos. I have an idea of what I want to do, but I never script or anything.
    Great set-up though brother! I'm just using a simple point and shoot camera and a nicer tripod.
    Thanks for the video

    I do have a question. I shoot in 720P on my canon and or my samsung phone and it looks great when I edit it but after its uploaded to UA-cam the quality drops. Do you know why this happens?

    • @guns4funcajanajustin
      @guns4funcajanajustin 7 років тому +1

      Dick do you rendering videos? If so the settings are not for the rendering. There is lot more to this. And how does the Quality drop in what way?

    • @feralwoodcraft
      @feralwoodcraft  7 років тому

      There are several things that can lead to this. UA-cam will always process videos to optimize them for streaming. That process will decrease quality to a certain degree no matter what you do. Because of that you want to give UA-cam the best quality you can. My first question is, when you render it, do you render it to MP4?

    • @TACHILL
      @TACHILL 7 років тому +1

      hey Dick i have noticed this same problem when rendering film as wmv but after doing it in mp4 it seems to of gone away..
