I have read books and seen videos about Beethoven's life at least a dozen times for over 30 years, and I still cannot get enough of it. He is one of the most interesting and impacting figure in human history.

Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, specifically the Ode to Joy, is the only piece of music that literally brings me to tears whenever I hear it. When I am in need of a cathartic cry, I put on a CD of that piece and before it is finished, I am brought to tears by several passages. It never fails, and to me, it is the single most beautiful piece of music ever written.

I have to be up to the 9th. It takes an emotional toll on me. Need to be in the right state of mind and have no distractions when plan on listening to it - like I have to give so much of myself to it. But man is it worth it! Excess is best! Insanity is good! (Sorry for the crazy end to my first paragraph. End of last movement of the 9th sends me into manic frenzy.)
I must say in looking back, Ludwig is the greatest composer. His sonatas are responsible for me falling in love with classical piano when I was 14. It's been with me ever since. His sonatas are more than enough for any composer but then you have to include his Symphony's, Conceto's , Quartets, I could go on. And then to do it with deafness is mind blowing. He's just too great for words.
Superb video! Mozart was great; Beethoven was the greatest. As I've gotten older, Bach has moved up my list of favorites to challenge Beethoven. But then I listen to the 5th, the 3rd, the 9th, the Appassionata, the Missa Solemnis, and I'm forever grateful for his marvelous genius. I highly recommend the UA-cam video titled "Beethoven's Ninth: Symphony For The World." I've made sure that my children and grandchildren have all grown up loving classical music, and the man who changed it forever.
It always lifts my spirit to hear the 9th Symphony, whichI consider the greatest piece of music ever written. The “Ode to Joy” final movement always brings tears to my eyes-no matter how many times I hear it.
Beethoven is definitely my favorite composer due to the raw honesty of his music. When I hear a piece of music, especially orchestral, I can detect honesty of expression, and truth. If it is lacking, when the composer is vying for fame, breaking new ground, shock, or any other ego-oriented pursuits, I can detect them, and consequently the music turns me off. This is true increasingly the newer the compositions. I, however, subscribe to the symphony and sit listening hoping to catch, occasionally, pure and emotionally true themes which totally delight me, as most of the compositions of beethoven do.
Beethoven has been my comfort, my inspiration for my studies,my solace and he has accompanied my life. His works have held me enthralled by their unique understanding of what it means to be a musician and a person.
A Beethoven with a british accent who looks like a hobbit, still a well made movie, very entertaining. Literally the milestone between the classic and the romantic periods.
The final movement of his last piano sonata (No 32), the second movement of his third symphony (funeral march) and the first movement of his piano sonata 14 (moonlight sonata) all bring tears to my eyes. They are quite emotional to me.
@ultimateconstruction It's the emotional part of the first movement I typed about here. To be sincere, Beethoven was all about emotion and he expressed it brilliantly in his works.

We should stop thinking about "greatness" as the mark of a composer's achievement. Beethoven was unique in every way. His greatness is that he composed music that he would never hear but wrote it anyway, a true hero! Nice bio about his life, things I didn't know about LvB.
Motzart, Hayden and others wrote magnificent music, and to me, the master is Beethoven. His music renders me to tears that rise up from my soul. Thank you, Ludwig. May your soul forever rest in peace.
Don't forget the number of Beethoven compositions which have their theme from mozart. Even the ode to joy theme is from mozart so keep that in mind when calling Beethoven the goat
I like to believe he could hear the notes in his head when he was deaf. I feel like he was probably trapped inside his head with music, and no way to let it out, and did his best.
While there are numerous great composers, none captured the human spirit in musical form the way Beethoven did. His genius transcends time and space. There never was, nor will there ever be, a musical genius in the likes of Beethoven, he will always reign supreme.
I have no doubt about Beethoven being the greatest composer of western classical orchestral music. In many of his works, he talks to his creator, & to humanity, in a voice, no other composer has ever done. The greatest symphonies, concertos, sonatas, all flowed from his pen. This lifelong pianist/composer and graduate of the Juilliard School of Music in NYC says the great Beethoven was "One of the greatest composers", Mozart, Bach and Brahms are right up there with him along with many others! Back then the three B's were Bach, Beethoven and Brahms! In the 20th century, the new three B's have been the Beatles, the BeeGees and the Beach Boys! May they rest in peace~💜💜💜
We get so carried away with 'the best.' Beethoven was certainly one of the best, but don't forget all the other great composers and performers of his time. We should merely thank God for all of them!!!
Certainly the ninth symphony was revolutionary, as so much of Beethovens work was. However, in terms of profound thematic material, complexity of interactive emotional dynamics, intensity of melodic and harmonic substance, and overall musical craftsmanship, there really is nothing approaching JS Bach's Mass in B Minor. It is such a pity that Beethoven never could have encountered a masterpiece on that scale, and fascinating to consider its potential influences.
You're right in a sense! Tho i would argue that its kinda nice to hear this more as an essay without break, and the cool nature of technology is we can pause at anytime to venture toward whatever Beethoven piece the documentary is talking about. Just take the time to fully listen to each piece as they come and return back to this informal documentary. Your experience doesnt have to be all in one place.
@faxanudu405 I know all the pieces, I am a classically trained pianist. That does not change the fact that it would have been nice to hear them, softly, in the background as the narrator is describing them. If any piece of media requires you to go elsewhere to experience it fully, it is a missed opportunity at best, and badly designed at worst.
Yes, that would seem to be the obvious thing to do. But as it couldn't really be background music, and because no one wants to hear Beethoven's music cut short, it would probably have made the documentary too long
I've been a lifelong lover of all things Beethoven and while I love and appreciate the others, Ludwig Van is the man. I had a music teacher tell me once...." Mozart is the sound of God laughing - Beethoven is the sound of God thinking" Never forgot that comment.
I always thought Johann Hummel was under rated. He was a contemporary of Beethoven. However, Beethoven gets my vote for the greatest composer of all time. But I like Bach and Mozart, too.
He was indeed the greatest ever despite insurmountable personal challenges! With compositions that would continue to amaze; & celebrate life whilst inspiring triumph against any adversity well beyond humanity's very existence!
He was, in my opinion, the greatest composer of his era. Perhaps of all time. Then there’s the amazing Bach. You can’t compare the two, really. Both Brilliant luminaries in completely different ways. Beethoven gives me chills.

Although there were people during his lifetime who couldn’t handle how different his music was. I believe I even heard some people walked out during one of his a performances. That could just be a rumor though. The 9th blew people away. It’s still blowing people away to this day.

Bubble gum card or not, Beethoven was a composer of devastating power and passion. His semi contemporary Mozart rendered happy, bubbling music mixed with occasionally sorrowful passages. Beethoven's pride and joy were passionate, brooding tunes. Which is what makes his glorious "Ode to Joy," all the more stunning a creation. Because it was such a contrast to his standard music. If there is a true Mt. Rushmore of classical composers, Beethoven's face is one on the mountain. Perhaps, king of the mountain.

@belindadrake5487 See, you don't need to have your picture on a bubble card to be great. Neither did Mozart or Johann Sebastian Bach. They both did all right!! Those are the three that would capture Win, Place, and Show in any poll of the greatest composers. Clearly, Charles Schulz thought of him so highly that he composed the character of Schroeder, Beethovens number one devotee. My favorite part of all is the 500 pianos and busts of Beethoven he keeps in his closet!! Enough for future generations to practice on. This is good because the music of this legend is destined to live on forever.
I've loved and played Beethoven's music as a child and still do... And in the depths of his sad melody's I still here a triumphant soul... Music that will inspire and stay with us for all time...
Beethoven poured out his genius in all his works, even in works considered minor. With respect to all other composers (primarily Bach and Mozart) he is the greatest composer of all time. There will never be anyone capable of surpassing him. Thank you
Bach composed at Beethoven's level but was behind the times ahead where he belonged. Mozart died too young to say he wouldn't have surpassed Beethoven by the end of a long life. Given these footnotes, however, I agree Beethoven was greatest overall.
A great video of the, undoubtedly, greatest composer who has walked this earth. Great you mentioned the Choral Fantasy and singled out the Appassionata, and gave Eroica and Solemnis the shout-outs they deserve 🙌🏼 Merits a few corrections though (what stood out to my ears): * Beethoven did not write any Cello Concerto, sonatas he did though * There was only one Kreutzer Sonata * Egmont, he wrote a whole piece of Incidental music, not only an Overture Fun fact: * Leonore had three re-writes * He wrote 32 piano sonatas (together with Bach considered the pinnacle of the piano repertoar)
There is no such thing as GREATEST OF ALL TIME! That being said Beethoven is amongst a very short list of GREATS. His music will be loved and appreciated forever.
I think that's a very true statement. Who's the greatest of all time? Who cares and who can judge? Let's appreciate them all and thank God for their wonderful gifts.
No bros, Beethoven was the greatest, his life was no more than heroic! There are no stories ever heard or written about a music composer that went deaf and because of that his compositions became even better! Plus he lived through the perils and hazards of the French Revolution! A unique period in history of war and liberation!

I visited Beethoven's "gebeurtehuis" in Bonn a few months back , nice statue and vibe of the great composer . His Ninth , always my favorite for the last 50 years .
No such person as greatest composer exists, neither is there a greatest artist, writer, poet, nor anything else in any field of human achievement; trying to determine a greatest composer is like trying to decide which is the greatest colour of the rainbow - a pointless exercise which in the end just comes down to being a subjective personal preference and opinion.
The third movement of his "Moonlight Sonata" is my favorite classical piece......a brilliant composition and in sharp contrast speedwise to the more famous (but equally brilliant) first movement. A very difficult piece to play and a real showpiece if you can manage it!

You’re in no position to be speaking in absolutes like that 🤡 If you asked me who my favorite composer was when I was between the ages of 16-21ish-I’d have said Beethoven. But the reality is that these different composers have qualities about them that can be found nowhere else. Mozart has a quality Beethoven never touched. If I had to limit that quality to a word, it would be “Divine”. Beethoven was more of a warrior of composition. It didn’t come as effortlessly to him-and he composed *MUCH* less work than some of his predecessors. Mozart is more of a “Krishna” of composition: Playful, sweet, seemingly effortless, heals the heart and mind. Beethoven is more of a “Gautuma Siddhartha”: Tempestuous, over-achieving but never satisfied, always intense, continuously *seeking* the divine but never quite touching it. Beethoven was a seeker-Mozart was the quality Beethoven was “seeking”. Mozart was a seeker. That quality just came from him like the fragrance of a flower. And even though I now say Mozart is my favorite-there would be no Mozart or Beethoven without Bach. Don’t speak in goofy absolutes like that.
@@davidsigler9690 He’s not the greatest at anything … He’s not the greatest melodist, not the greatest contrapuntist. There’s no one categoric you can pin him as being the best. He himself admitted he never wrote a great fugue despite trying his whole life. He’s definitely the most triumphant and victorious composer … But not the greatest composer. If it weren’t for Bach and Mozart-there would quite literally be no Beethoven. I don’t like to speak in terms of “favorites”, but if I had to, I’d say Beethoven is my second favorite composer-but not the greatest 😂
JS Bach was the father of all GREAT classical music. It is said by musicologists that if there had been no Bach, there would not have been a Mozart & a Beethoven, so much was owed to him by them. Bach is still the greatest composer of all time.

as a girl studying music i fell in love with - bach, mozart and beethoven. they are still my favorite composers. love schubert, schuman, chopin and debussy too but i often wonder .... why is it humanity has since, never been able to produce such profundity of composers as in that time frame? what happened to classical music? like architecture, modernity made it discordant it seems - oh dear!

Anthony sure there WERE other genius composers Mozart,Liszt, Chopin, Rossini to name some but none of these had the sheer astonishing creativity ,depth, energy and variety that Beethoven had,that is the reason has is absolutely the Greatest composer of all time.

Thank you for not using his music in the “background.” I have no doubt that Beethoven would not have approved of this, as he never intended his music to be used as “window dressing.” In fact, this represents his overall achievement to elevate the Art of Music to a new level of artistic respect in the popular discourse. Sadly, this is lost on nearly all current “content creators,” who use music for cheap background “effect,” which means it’s not intended to be listened to with full attention. Allow me to correct a few “details” that were missed. Surely you meant to refer to ‘cello “sonatas,” not “concertos.” And, the fourth note of the iconic opening motive of the 5th Symphony is “E-flat,” not “E”!
LVB was the greatest ever. I have been absorbed by his first two piano concertos and Symphonies 5 &7 more times than I could ever recall. I regard these pieces as the soundtrack of the universe.
Fifty-five years ago, I started with Beethoven whom I still love very much. A few years later, I came across J.S. Bach. The music of the latter has proved so powerfully attractive to me that ever since I have had to browbeat myself to listen to anything else.
It is a subjective question, but to me, he was the greatest. I love his symphonies, with the 5th, to me, being his best by a long way....so far ahead of it's time.
You know, Mozart died at age 35. Bach lived twice as long....the comparison for greatness would be more fair if you only compared the first 35 years of Bach's music to the entire output of Mozart. The same goes for Beethove to Mozart or Hayden to Mozart. Hayden considered Mozart to be the finest musician known to him including those that lived in earlier time (Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Monteverdi, Palestina etc, etc).......apples to apples
I love them all. They each have their own "style". It's great that they are not all the same, just as modern musicians/ composers are all different. More styles of music for us to enjoy. From a singer/ musician.

While there are numerous great composers, none captured the human spirit in musical form the way Beethoven did. His genius transcends time and space. There never was, nor will there ever be, a musical genius in the likes of Beethoven, he will always reign supreme.

I have no doubt about Beethoven being the greatest composer of western classical orchestral music. In many of his works, he talks to his creator, & to humanity, in a voice, no other composer has ever done. The greatest symphonies, concertos, sonatas, all flowed from his pen. Yes, there were other greats, but none like him.
The world may never see one like him again.

This lifelong pianist/composer and graduate of the Juilliard School of Music in NYC says the great Beethoven was "One of the greatest composers", Mozart, Bach and Brahms are right up there with him along with many others! Back then the three B's were Bach, Beethoven and Brahms! In the 20th century, the new three B's have been the Beatles, the BeeGees and the Beach Boys! May they rest in peace~💜💜💜

Certainly the ninth symphony was revolutionary, as so much of Beethovens work was. However, in terms of profound thematic material, complexity of interactive emotional dynamics, intensity of melodic and harmonic substance, and overall musical craftsmanship, there really is nothing approaching JS Bach's Mass in B Minor. It is such a pity that Beethoven never could have encountered a masterpiece on that scale, and fascinating to consider its potential influences.

You're right in a sense! Tho i would argue that its kinda nice to hear this more as an essay without break, and the cool nature of technology is we can pause at anytime to venture toward whatever Beethoven piece the documentary is talking about. Just take the time to fully listen to each piece as they come and return back to this informal documentary. Your experience doesnt have to be all in one place.
@faxanudu405 I know all the pieces, I am a classically trained pianist. That does not change the fact that it would have been nice to hear them, softly, in the background as the narrator is describing them.
If any piece of media requires you to go elsewhere to experience it fully, it is a missed opportunity at best, and badly designed at worst.

Yes, that would seem to be the obvious thing to do. But as it couldn't really be background music, and because no one wants to hear Beethoven's music cut short, it would probably have made the documentary too long

I always thought Johann Hummel was under rated. He was a contemporary of Beethoven. However, Beethoven gets my vote for the greatest composer of all time. But I like Bach and Mozart, too.

He was, in my opinion, the greatest composer of his era. Perhaps of all time. Then there’s the amazing Bach. You can’t compare the two, really. Both Brilliant luminaries in completely different ways. Beethoven gives me chills.
I've always said that Bach was early rock and roll, Mozart was top 40 rock and roll and Beethoven was metal.

Although there were people during his lifetime who couldn’t handle how different his music was. I believe I even heard some people walked out during one of his a performances. That could just be a rumor though. The 9th blew people away. It’s still blowing people away to this day.

Beethoven was the first pianist to bust 5 piano strings in one performance and saying good bye to the weak strings fortepiano.
I always thought that was Franz Liszt, but not sure of course.

Those are the three that would capture Win, Place, and Show in any poll of the greatest composers. Clearly, Charles Schulz thought of him so highly that he composed the character of Schroeder, Beethovens number one devotee. My favorite part of all is the 500 pianos and busts of Beethoven he keeps in his closet!! Enough for future generations to practice on. This is good because the music of this legend is destined to live on forever.

Beethoven poured out his genius in all his works, even in works considered minor. With respect to all other composers (primarily Bach and Mozart) he is the greatest composer of all time. There will never be anyone capable of surpassing him. Thank you
Bach composed at Beethoven's level but was behind the times ahead where he belonged. Mozart died too young to say he wouldn't have surpassed Beethoven by the end of a long life. Given these footnotes, however, I agree Beethoven was greatest overall.
A great video of the, undoubtedly, greatest composer who has walked this earth. Great you mentioned the Choral Fantasy and singled out the Appassionata, and gave Eroica and Solemnis the shout-outs they deserve 🙌🏼
Merits a few corrections though (what stood out to my ears):
* Beethoven did not write any Cello Concerto, sonatas he did though
* There was only one Kreutzer Sonata
* Egmont, he wrote a whole piece of Incidental music, not only an Overture

* He wrote 32 piano sonatas (together with Bach considered the pinnacle of the piano repertoar)

There are no stories ever heard or written about a music composer that went deaf and because of that his compositions became even better! Plus he lived through the perils and hazards of the French Revolution! A unique period in history of war and liberation!

The third movement of his "Moonlight Sonata" is my favorite classical piece......a brilliant composition and in sharp contrast speedwise to the more famous (but equally brilliant) first movement. A very difficult piece to play and a real showpiece if you can manage it!

You’re in no position to be speaking in absolutes like that 🤡 If you asked me who my favorite composer was when I was between the ages of 16-21ish-I’d have said Beethoven. But the reality is that these different composers have qualities about them that can be found nowhere else. Mozart has a quality Beethoven never touched. If I had to limit that quality to a word, it would be “Divine”. Beethoven was more of a warrior of composition. It didn’t come as effortlessly to him-and he composed *MUCH* less work than some of his predecessors. Mozart is more of a “Krishna” of composition: Playful, sweet, seemingly effortless, heals the heart and mind. Beethoven is more of a “Gautuma Siddhartha”: Tempestuous, over-achieving but never satisfied, always intense, continuously *seeking* the divine but never quite touching it. Beethoven was a seeker-Mozart was the quality Beethoven was “seeking”. Mozart was a seeker. That quality just came from him like the fragrance of a flower. And even though I now say Mozart is my favorite-there would be no Mozart or Beethoven without Bach. Don’t speak in goofy absolutes like that.

He himself admitted he never wrote a great fugue despite trying his whole life. He’s definitely the most triumphant and victorious composer … But not the greatest composer. If it weren’t for Bach and Mozart-there would quite literally be no Beethoven. I don’t like to speak in terms of “favorites”, but if I had to, I’d say Beethoven is my second favorite composer-but not the greatest 😂
JS Bach was the father of all GREAT classical music. It is said by musicologists that if there had been no Bach, there would not have been a Mozart & a Beethoven, so much was owed to him by them. Bach is still the greatest composer of all time.

Thank you for not using his music in the “background.” I have no doubt that Beethoven would not have approved of this, as he never intended his music to be used as “window dressing.” In fact, this represents his overall achievement to elevate the Art of Music to a new level of artistic respect in the popular discourse. Sadly, this is lost on nearly all current “content creators,” who use music for cheap background “effect,” which means it’s not intended to be listened to with full attention.
Allow me to correct a few “details” that were missed. Surely you meant to refer to ‘cello “sonatas,” not “concertos.” And, the fourth note of the iconic opening motive of the 5th Symphony is “E-flat,” not “E”!
I listen to beethoven not always bacause i want to , it as if i have to. Very compelling music.
LVB was the greatest ever. I have been absorbed by his first two piano concertos and Symphonies 5 &7 more times than I could ever recall. I regard these pieces as the soundtrack of the universe.

Fifty-five years ago, I started with Beethoven whom I still love very much. A few years later, I came across J.S. Bach. The music of the latter has proved so powerfully attractive to me that ever since I have had to browbeat myself to listen to anything else.

You know, Mozart died at age 35. Bach lived twice as long....the comparison for greatness would be more fair if you only compared the first 35 years of Bach's music to the entire output of Mozart. The same goes for Beethove to Mozart or Hayden to Mozart. Hayden considered Mozart to be the finest musician known to him including those that lived in earlier time (Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Monteverdi, Palestina etc, etc).......apples to apples
I love them all. They each have their own "style". It's great that they are not all the same, just as modern musicians/ composers are all different. More styles of music for us to enjoy. From a singer/ musician.
