It was discovered by accident. It was found that biscuit tin lids and metal dustbins would produce different notes when dented. The first instruments only had two, then three notes (dents). Steelpans now have over twenty indentations (notes).
anyone know how much it would cost to make your own? i've been playing pan for almost 10 years and don't have enough to buy one, but I've been considering making one.
Why are so many people saying oh an old oil drum.duh that's what they are made from don't be so ignorant.i love playing steel pans (not steel drums steel pans i'm talking to the americans here) i play double guitar
the origins of the steel pan drums are the islands of trinidad and tobago....not exactly known for their affluent suburbs. buying an expensive steel drum is, in fact, missing the entire nature of the instrument itself. you can make your own pan drum with litte more than a 55 Bbl drum and small array of hammers....and have an instrument that you can be proud of rather than lining some manufacturers pocket.
I find it odd that people did not know the origin of the steel drum was oil drums. That's traditional, and it makes sense - a cheap source of material.
How pls share, I would like to make one for my child school , project on using recycled stuff also am from Trinidad and would love my son to learn about his heritage
Where ever it came from it wasn't the white race. I'm white...so keep it simple and keep the race thing out of it plz. Any musician here isn't asking those types of questions or making those comments.
This is the project for this summer holiday - if i'd be able to get some drums to make pans
I've always loved the sounds of the steel drum, never knew it was so complicated to make. Took me 27 years to look up how it was made! haha
Impresionante como es el trabajó de éste instrumento
I just played in a concert with Ray Holman! Much respect for the people that build these instruments.
Making one now... looking pretty good so far!
The Trinidad Island locals used to make them from old oil drums (Aviation oil) left by US army air corps after WWII.
Wonderful! That sounds amazing!
I see why they so expensive to buy! Much respect!
this is one awesome instrument
@Docv400 you have to get them retuned every now and then and it costs a lot of money to get it done right. At least out here in long beach it does.
Is the fire for rehardening the metal or more a cleaning. This is too cool
give me a smile on me face when watching this
I made a burn-barrel yesterday out of a steel barrel. It burns stuff inside real good.
His name is jim St.Rose coming from the ellie mannette era.he has since passed on.very quiet tuner not too much heavy hammering.nice guy.
I might need to ask my mech friend for some of those drums!
wow! this vieo is a keeper! thank you for sharing this. i miss playin steel pans :(
The present day metal workers should learn this, a work masterpiece!
I would love to learn how to make these.

Takes me back! Used to see fellas doing this work in Independence Square (not square atall, but a long rectangle). Ah Port of Spain ...
ray holman is coming into my steel drum class at school to play a tune with us
Herman Rock Johnston and Anthony Williams revolutionized the pan bringing it to 36 notes for the tenor
Me encanta ese instrumento
Ese sonido es muy llenador❤❤❤❤❤
Nintendo rocks at making music with this Instrument for their Mario Sport games.
Where can i get patterns to make myself? I got yet the oil barrel but i havent the tools.
Thanks
So cool i always wanted one but to costly i want to try and make one
Hah, good luck with that!
Very cool.
I wonder how he does it without measuring on another finished steel drum first.
@gettavid Exactly, its kind of like a bunch of tiny bells.
Hy, how can i get more information about the manufacturing og the steel pan? Thank! =)
How the hell did someone figure out that a really great instrument could be transformed from an old oil barrel? Epiphany and genius!
It was discovered by accident. It was found that biscuit tin lids and metal dustbins would produce different notes when dented. The first instruments only had two, then three notes (dents). Steelpans now have over twenty indentations (notes).
very interesting!
How would you come up with the idea? without already seeing one I would of never thought you could get so many notes out of the bottom of an oil drum
That's the beauty of musical creatives, especially descendants from the motherland❤
How they make the notes templates sizes? Like what size for an A or a D etc... ? Someone?
He measured it off his old one, but you can find templates online for them, you just need to make sure that it's a tenor pan.
Can these guys make a 12 bass?
anyone know how much it would cost to make your own? i've been playing pan for almost 10 years and don't have enough to buy one, but I've been considering making one.
Do they keep in tune permanently or do they need retuning occasionally?
They can need tuning.
les son , sont magnifique
Why are so many people saying oh an old oil drum.duh that's what they are made from don't be so ignorant.i love playing steel pans (not steel drums steel pans i'm talking to the americans here) i play double guitar
@mystyleeH what does that stand for?
the ultimate in recycling!
I got to play the steel drums in 5th grade, My elementary school was kinda rich
Nice Vid!
uno de los mejores intrumentos creados !
Hii
I need a pan
master craftsman
at the beginning, is he hitting the drum with a coconut?
That is a genuine cannonball! or so i was told, if so it must be very old! Some guys have used a bowling ball!
So you pretty much have to stretch the metal to create the bowl shape and cook it over a fire.
@berlingirlie i have one in my room :)
Bloody legit!
tempered over open flame.. cool
Yo quisiera saber el precio real para colombia

MIS RESPETOS
The mark of an awesome instrument? You tune it with a freaking HAMMER.
a 55gal oil pan costs less than 500 jamaican dollars. less than 6US
That's what a steel drum is made from - oil barrels....
I find it odd that people did not know the origin of the steel drum was oil drums. That's traditional, and it makes sense - a cheap source of material.
I. Made. One
psshhhht, i make one of those everyday
How pls share, I would like to make one for my child school , project on using recycled stuff also am from Trinidad and would love my son to learn about his heritage
