I had a surprise surgery so wasn’t able to be at the live, but this is awesome. I agree with so many of the comments. I really think it’s such an important book...definitely a horror book, but I don’t know if I would classify it as thriller so much. A horrifying situation throughput the book...that totally made me sick to my stomach reading so many of the situations. Such a clever writing by Alyssa Cole! I definitely have to read one of her romances, though I’m not sure where to start. I’ll have to listen again...Zoe mentioned one where female is a STEM educator I think she said? Anyway, fabulous book! Thank all of you!
Such a great discussion! I had watched reviews of this book a while back before I read it and some described it as more of a romance? I dunno man I didn’t see any romance. I was on the edge of my seat and felt so anxious. Being from Brooklyn myself and having lived and currently work in this exact part of brooklyn, it was really really really based in reality, which is the scariest part of all.
i gave 3/5 SPOILERS im from brooklyn myself and liked some of the new york stuff, although it was kinda cringy. i orginally felt that the story took place in bed-stuy, but i feel like it's more like crown heights given the talk of prospect park and eastern parkway. gifford place is not a real street or neighborhood. it felt like cole kept having to assure us of how "brooklyn" sydney was with drinking bodega coffee on her stoop, and buying a loosie, and stomping in her brownstone with her old tims. i get that a major theme was the "us vs them", but the white people were all cartoonishly villainous or had no self-awareness. racism in nyc usually occurs in more subtle ways and a lot of it was just way over the top. i honestly was really enjoying the book until the end. it was a 4/5 read. the pacing was fine for me, until the ending when it became a complete clusterfuck of events. the reveals should've occurred more slowly instead of being lumped into the last 40 pages. they literally went from room to room in the underground tunnel, finding out more and increasingly crazy things. it all just happened and was over. i honestly feel like i could dock it down to a 2.5 because of the ending and how it unfolded.
A year later but I finally read this. I enjoyed the story but I also realized that I read way to many thrillers set in the suburbs of London or Ireland or Scotland. Thanks for recommending it.
But... I love the Howdy Doody safe word 🤣 especially in the end! I loved this book and Theo was just not it though. I think this book was too real... TERRIFYING. THE. ENTIRE. WAY.
I wasnt able to catch the discussion live, just watched it as a recording, loved the discussion, i have just finished reading the book this week and i loved it too.
This was such a great discussion! This was the first Alyssa Cole book I have read, but I look forward to reading more from her in the future as I loved this book!
This was an amazing discussion! I love basically everything Alyssa Cole has ever written and I fully support you picking up some of her romance novels!!
Watching this super late but this book was one of my last reads of 2020 and I loved it! I was so excited to see that you were reading it for the book club. Loved the discussion! :)
I missed the love show but watching now! Really enjoyed this book. Also my first book on gentrification. And it makes me want to watch Get Out bc I've heard it's similar. Also any other books that you know of about gentrification I would be totally interested in. The conversation in this book blew my mind.
I was really sad I couldn’t make the live (boo work) but I’m so glad to have read this book and still heard this discussion! All the things about the real life situations making this so scary was definitely true.
I'm so so glad you came back to comment here Fadama! I was trying to find a platform to reach out to say thank you so much for participating in the conversation, and I'm so sorry we may not have been seeing everything you were saying. I feel like I saw all your comments coming through, but I wanted to know what was happening on your end (what type of error or message you were seeing?) I'm bummed that was happening for you!
@@BooksandLala it just deleted my comments immediately if it had words like gaslighting, trauma, and even aggression. Then it just timed me out. It sucked because it was the first book I read for the bookclub but nonetheless I enjoyed you and the beautiful guest. I’ll be back for house of leaves because apparently I am committed to this club now. Im sure that wont be a racial conversion so youtube wont be pissy 🙄
That makes sense! I too don't typically seek out sex scenes in books, but I never want to deny what they accomplish for the narrative so I try to stay neutral on it haha
as a *human* you should be upset that people are being experimented on as if they are less than human. if people have trouble empathizing with that, they need to do some soul searching.
Great discussion! Live show should be at least an hour from now on! 😃
Thanks so much for your participation here and on Goodreads Justin, I really enjoyed hearing your perspective!
Wonderful discussion! Really enjoyed this!

Really loved joining in for the reading and this discussion! Honestly one of the scariest, creepiest things I've ever read
💙 I really loved this book!! So intense
Literally just started reading this last night
I apparently accidentally participated in the book club this month! As soon as I am officially done I will come back and watch!
I was really sad I couldn’t make the live (boo work) but I’m so glad to have read this book and still heard this discussion! All the things about the real life situations making this so scary was definitely true.
Everything is great
On your end. 😊
How can I view the live streamed comments?
Sometimes they take a little while to load, but you will see them on mobile if you click the "live chat" button right next to the thumbs up/down.
The average star rating for the people who left it in the comments was 3.65 ⭐️
The discussion on "this book isn't scary" was the same discussion around Lakewood and people (white people) not finding it scary or "realistic".
UA-cam kept censoring my comments on the live chat and they weren’t inappropriate but Lala followed me on twitter 💃
One day I’ll start my booktube and hit you up to be apart of your book club 😏😉

I wish there wasn't a sex scene like that, but I NEVER like sex scenes because I guess I'm too much of a prude. Lol
Makes me uncomfy.
