for me, being a mood reader is less about starting and stopping books than it is about reading books i’m most excited about/interested in. this usually means that ones i have purchased most recently get read the quickest, though!
Saaaame! I rarely DNF a book. I do consider myself a mood reader, but for me, that means I decide what book to pick next based on mood. There is no agenda.
Exactly! I used to be more of a mood reader and back then I actually couldn't read more than 1 book at a time, but I would finish that one book really quickly and binge series all the time. Now I read multiple books at once because I plan it carefully (so they are different formats and genres) and it takes me longer to get through series because I'd already planned to read something else after I finish the book I'm on.
Yes. Same. I don’t often DNF. And if I decide, 10 pages in, that it’s not for me, it’s not because I’m not in the mood. It’s usually because it’s not interesting to me and I won’t pick it up again ever
As a mood reader, for me it really comes down to ‘does this feel like a chore, or am I having fun’ if a book starts to feel like a chore and I’m only reading it ‘because I think I have to’ then I put it down and read something else. But if I’m having fun (regardless of 5 star or not) I finish it!
Absolutely. It's true that I fail at book clubs and reading challenges that are too restrictive (read a book with a left-handed cowboy) because then it starts to feel like work. Nothing throws me into a reading slump faster than feeling forced to finish a book I'm hating.
Watching Kayla struggle to mood read is so incomprehensible to me when I've been a mood reader my entire life and couldn't stick to a reading schedule if my life depended on it. Structured reading is truly my arch nemesis. (Brains are so weird and interesting!)
ESPECIALLY if the book you left halfway wasn't really to your liking and then when you come back to it, you see everything differently and end up loving it 😂
Nothing beats your library letting you know that book you only read half of 6 months ago is now available again and wait it's the 3rd time since you asked for it to be delivered later the other 2 times because you weren't in the mood for it, but finally, you are and ready to finish it!
I feel like I’m a mood reader, but not in the sense that I read multiple books at once depending on my mood, but more that I let my mood choose what I read in the moment regardless of tbr
I have had as many as 7 books going at once (recently)...admittedly that is overkill and it stresses me out if it goes that far. I'll usually start focusing on one or two books to get my working list shorter. Usually though, I have at least an audiobook, a Kindle book, and a print book going at the same time. Sometimes I throw in a short story collection as well. If I find I've gotten to a point in a book where I'm really hooked, all else is shoved aside until I finish it. I may have an idea of what I want my next book to be and/or a loose TBR, but at the end of the day, I read what I'm drawn to in the moment.
Being a mood reader is ultimately just reading what you're in the mood for. I'm a mood reader to the core; tell me I need to read something specific for a challenge or prompt and my entire being will reject it 🙃 . And I am usually reading 5 books at once! An audio book, a digital book, a nonfiction, and a couple fiction physical. If I enjoy a book I'll finish it, even if it'll be a high 3 star or more. I draw the line around 2 stars. It's no longer worth my time.
I felt this except I’m very optimistic and easy to please lol. If I feel like it’s a two star I will keep reading because what if it gets better. I save my one stars for DNFs but I’ve never Dnf’d lol
This is how I mood read too! I did not relate to very many things on the book riot list Kayla read at the beginning. I used to push through books even after I realized I was despising them and would just hate-read them through to the end, but I have gotten better about DNFing more quickly when I realize a book is a total waste of time. To me being a mood reader is less about starting and stopping books left and right, and more about not planning my reading ahead further than about a week.
I read whatever I'm in the mood for but I don't read more than one book at once. It's overwhelming to me. If I'm not feeling a book I either completely give up on it (if it's really bad) or put it aside to try again another time. Then I just pick up another one. Right now I'm in a space opera kick lol
I'm a mood reader through and through. Mood reading, for me, doesn't mean DNFing an imperfect book. It's not about reading multiple books at once. It's about reading what I feel like reading, and not forcing myself to read things I don't want to read in the moment. That said, I will force myself to finish okay books, so long as they aren't bad. Sometimes I am in the mood to read a book to specifically fulfil a reading challenge prompt. Sometimes it's about my literal mood, my emotional needs. Sometimes it's about genre, or tropes, or character types, or settings. There's no real one way to mood read. Someone who does specific TBRs all the time could be said to be mood reading because they are in the mood to follow the TBR. It's variable.
As a mood reader I’ve never had an issue with starting and stopping books. I can only read one book at a time, whatever book I am in the mood for. I finish a book and only then can I pick up another one. I get into moods and can only read something I’m in the mood for. For example, I get into a romance mood and read solely romance for 2 months. The worst is when I can’t figure out what I’m in the mood for so I end up reading nothing because nothing feels right
i feel like about the 23 minute mark is when you started to describe what mood reading is for me, it's playing off the last book i read, either i loved it and i need to build off of it and continue the mood or i've had enough of that and i want something completely different, i feel like a lot of the time the last book i read determines what the next book i read is going to be
I literally screamed when you held up "Passing," "The Vanishing Half," and "Recitatif" together! I JUST wrote a paper synthesizing those three, after reading Recitatif on your recommendation.
That Book Riot article really went out of its way to define mood reading in negative terms. Their points are all technically true, but they only included negatives and made it sound like mood reading is the worst(?) version of reading. I'm excited to see the rest of the video and your discoveries, Kayla, I'm just sorry you were given those particular bullet points at the start of this challenge.
Oh I didn't take it that way at all, just finding a baseline for if I identify as a mood reader already haha. I had to find some type of article to start the discussion since *I'm* not qualified. Mood reading makes sense for most people and therefore is mostly a positive experience I imagine 💕
I also wasn't vibing with the Book Riot article all that much. There are definitely some books I pick up simply for entertainment purposes as a mood reader. However, if the book is making some poignant statements I'm definitely putting my thinking cap on for it. But this choice heavily depends on whether I have the emotional/mental energy for it.
@@BooksandLala Thanks for the reply, and looking for a popular definition of mood reading was a great way to start the vlog! I just thought the article focused unduly on what mood readers don't do (challenges, book clubs, finishing books) to the point of being inaccurate ("a mood reader is someone who has many books they haven't finished"). Mood reading isn't a lack of structure, in my experience, the mood part *is* the structure! If I read what I want to when I have the time, I will read many more books than if I tried to impose outside rules onto my reading. All our brains are wired differently, and this vlog was great to watch because it's fun to see someone look critically at the way they structure their reading experience.
It's so funny that when Kayla tries to be a mood reader she reads the first chapter of a hundred books 😂 "Be a mood reader" and she took it as a challenge. For me having books that I have to read in a specific time is a challenge, I'm trying to do the buzzword challenge and I haven't done january yet, but have already read for "body" and "game words" 💀
Being a mood reader means, for me, looking at my TBR shelves and picking up what looks best to me in the moment, rather than having a pre-made list of books I've decided to tackle in order. I HATE being told what to read next . . . even if I'm the one telling me.😊
I'm 100% a mood reader, and it's both good and bad. I'm always reading 2-3 books at once (I enjoy switching b/w genres and formats), and because I'm usually reading what I'm interested in, I tend to finish more. But I definitely have to fight through reading slumps pretty frequently. If I have to force myself through something for the sake of a challenge or a TBR, I have a really hard time picking up something new afterwards
This was like watching a video of how I feel making decisions as a mood reader lmao i cant always tell what is me as a mood reader and what is ADHD, but sometimes even if I'm enjoying a book midway but I'm even slightly bored or my mood shifts, I will drop it to start something new. Sometimes I'm like "I really need to read something fantastical right now" and other days I want romance with NO fantasy elements and some days I wake up thinking I'm gonna solve a mystery. It's like an itch that *needs* scratched to be happy. The amount of hours I have spent just staring at my shelves waiting for something to call to me.....
See and for me, I'm definitely a mood reserver, but then 10 books arrive and I go *wtf- I have no room for these in my already established tbr of the month, what was I thinking* 😅
Being a mood reader is really just about letting your mood guide your TBR rather than having set plans. It’s not really starting and stopping books at random. That said, I used to let my mood fully guide my reads and seemed to go through frequent reading slumps because of it. This year, I set a monthly “TBR menu.” I select what I’m feeling, but only within the bounds of what’s on the menu. This has really helped me stay focused on my reading goals and motivated to read daily!
as a mood reader, I loved this video concept. it's so interesting watching someone *try* to mood read. but also as a mood reader, I hardly ever dnf books (maybe that's just me?). I basically stare at my shelves (and library holds) and grab a stack of books that I think i'm in the mood for at that moment. and then I choose whichever one stands out the most. Usually they all fit just one specific mood, but sometimes I'll be in the mood for multiple things, and my stack will reflect that.
I'm absolutely a mood reader but for me that mostly means that whenever I want to read a book I pick whatever I feel in the moment, but once I start reading a book I have to finish it. I really hate DNFing books and I can't read more than one book at a time. Honestly I admire how you're able to stick to your plans and schedule, I can never do that for anything (even beyond reading) I just have to decide in the moment, and sometimes it involves going through all of my TBR and holding them and asking myself "is this the one" until I finally get the "right" feeling. Lmao I'm not really sure if that makes sense.
I’m a mood reader and I feel like you overthought what a mood reader is. For me being a mood reader just means reading what sounds good to me in the moment rather than having a set list I HAVE to stick to, etc. No mood reader is the same in how they’d handle it and not every mood reader can have 10 books going at once though. I get overwhelmed reading two books at once and am a completionist in the sense that once I start a book I usually want to finish it asap. I personally can’t put books down and pick them back up on a regular basis, but I know a lot of other people who do. It just depends. Some of the criteria the internet said you need to match to be a mood reader just sounded like pure chaos to me lol.
As a mood reader I can say that I definitely DNF at least half the books I start. It means I read more five star books though! If I’m not in the mood for it I figure I have better things to do with my time. Lol 7:12
I think what non mood readers don't get is that there are no rules when it comes to mood reading. If someone wants to mood read, don't follow guidelines of an article, because in that way you are already structuring your reading.😅 I think mood reading starts with the question "am I in the mood to read?" (which might sound weird for "TBR readers" 🤭). And if you want to read, you just pick up whatever is calling to you the most. It's like you are following your heart and not your brain.😁 I'd say it is easier to become a "TBR reader" than a mood reader, because in a way mood readers can also organize their reading. I do seasonal TBRs where I gather a bunch of books that I'm in the mood for and I pick up whatever I want in the moment. And the other thing is that I think it varies how people mood read. I don't like reading multiple books at once, I like focusing on one (except if I read a fiction and a nonfiction book). So the general description of a mood reader doesn't apply to everyone, but it kinda gives an example of a certain type of a mood reader. That's all folks, that was my TED talk.😂
This is a good point because I was reading a bunch of mood reader comments saying they DNF a lot and that is not me but I very much consider myself a mood reader! I hate DNFing but if I'm not loving something, I'm not gonna be in the mood to pick it up often but I WILL finish it eventually lol. I just have at least 5 books that I'm reading at once 😅 and always a minimum of three because I'll be reading something physical, ebook, and audio because half my mood reading is what format I'm wanting to read
@@kate-ne Same for me. My biggest consideration outside of what I'm the mood for is the source and format. So I'll look at my stack of library books, audiobooks, owned Kindle books, owned print books, galleys - whichever category I think I'm due next, and I pick something that calls to me. Having a TBR of books I'm interested in IS helpful to me, but it's not a to do list as much as a list of options.
When you start following the thread of interest really is the core of mood reading! Exhausting that interest until you are sick of it or find a new thread feels like something I do as a mood reader! Going outside of that at the wrong time can lead to DNFing books I know I'd like if it was "the right time".
That certainly was a journey. As a mood reader myself, I can see your struggle but feel that we should all follow the path of least resistance. Ultimately, we all want to get lost in a world but all go about it in our own way.
As a mood reader, I usually pick up five to eight books and then cycle through them. If I’m not in the mood right then I put a bookmark there and start a new one. I own so many bookmarks.
I class myself as a mood reader but I rarely soft dnf. My mood reading consists of standing in front of my shelves and going “what am I in the mood for…?” The only book I soft dnfed this year is the gilded wolves and that’s only because Finlay Donovan came out and I wanted to read it straight away!
this is so exciting! i'm a mood reader so this is a cool idea for me to watch you do. it's the reason why i can never stick to a tbr, follow readathons, and buddy reads are hard for me to keep up with. however, i always stick to one book and i try not to dnf unless i really hate it and i'm at risk of putting myself through a reading slump. so far, that's what's worked out for me. i've had very few dnf's because of this method. my mood reading-ness is also why i LOVE readathons and book clubs that have very loose rules like "read a book with a [trope/prompt]." those are really fun for me because i'm hitting the readathon goals + following my mood.
As a complete mood reader, it's hilarious watching that Kayla literally doesn't understand what just reading what you're in the mood for at the moment looks like, lol.
I loved this video! You are the most Type A person I've ever seen and watching you mood read....*chef's kiss*. When you're standing in front of your shelf saying, "I don't know what I'm in the mood for!" As a mood reader, I can tell you.....exactly! Yes! That's why you have to stand in front of them and mind meld with each one until a connection is made. 😂 I wish I could read like you! Enjoying reading constantly and finishing books in a day or two never getting sick of it?! I can't even imagine that...
I think mood reading is such an interesting concept and there are a lot of misconceptions - as well as different versions, of course. I mean, 10 people could probably describe their mood reading in 10 different ways. I am a list and planning sort of person, so I do make monthly TBRs to narrow down books that pique my interest. The TBR generally consists of 20+ books, even though I only read 8-10 books a month, so that I can pick and choose depending on how I feel throughout the month. And sometimes I end up taking a bunch of books off that list and adding news ones because I've changed my mind. I also very rarely put down a book to read something else unless I'm genuinely not enjoying it or something like that. I mean, watching TV or movies is pretty much always "mood watching". I've never known of anyone who makes a list of what to watch on TV or forces themselves to watch something. You just pick what sounds good in the moment! So I kind of chuckle when some people make mood reading seem like a complex or strange concept 😂 At the end of the day, if I want to read something, I'm not going to make myself wait just because I already have a list of books to read. Or if I have something on my list and I decide I'm not in the mood, I'm not going to force myself to read it. That's all!
I did the readings at my brother’s wedding and one of the selections was one of the quotes you chose from Giovanni’s Room!! “Not many people have ever died of love, but multitudes have perished, and are perishing every hour, and in the oddest places, for lack of it.” I can’t tell you how happy it makes me to hear that you resonated with that same quote!
This is absolutely how I would mood read. Deciding reading on a whim and then completely overthinking what books to pick and trying to come up with a mood system 🤣🤣🤣
I can be kind of a mood reader. But the complesionist in me doesn't stop reading a book that I'm not necessarily loving. Unless I absolutely despise it, I'll usually finish what I start.
I'm 1000% a mood reader. How I pick my next read is pick 5 or so books that jump out to me for whatever reason that day *cover, synopsis, hype, release date, excitement, genre, ect* then I read the first chapter of all of them and read whichever one I didn't want to put down. 🤓
I would not consider this a failure! You are not a natural mood reader so that fact that you were able to even do this, for that long, with so many books... kudos! Also, the stuff you are in the mood for shows where your passion lays with books, hard hitting conversations and horror. I enjoyed this introspective vlog. Thank you!
I would consider myself a mood reader, but I’m also a very type A person. I love the concept of creating a TBR but I typically can’t/don’t stick with it. My “mood reading” usually just means that the way I pick out what to read next is based on whatever catches my attention at the moment. I almost always finish the book regardless of rating unless I just HATE it.
I never have a tbr as I would never stick to it. I am definitely a mood reader, but more than like likely read a book straight after similar to the one I have read.
I'm definitely a mood reader but I would define it differently. I'm almost always reading around five books at a time because sometimes I am in the mood for horror, sometimes, romance, sometimes sci fi, etc. and being able to put a book down and pick up another that hits just the right spot is very freeing for me. As long as the books aren't too similar in content, plot, or characteristics I have no trouble keeping them apart in my mind.
That’s a good point - I always read multiple books at a time, but they have to be different from one another. It’s like once my “fantasy” spot is taken, I normally won’t start another fantasy until it’s done, but I will read other genres.
as a complete and utter mood reader this is such fun video concept. its funny how much our readings and often personality align but then sometimes you are literally at the very other end of the spectrum. 😆🥰
I am a mood reader, and your description of how you choose what books to read stressed me out 😂. I just sit in front of my bookshelf and wait for a book to speak to me. I do read 5+ books at once and have a lot of books on my shelf that I started and never finished because it wasn't the right time to read it. My reading is very influenced by the weather, and if I try to tell myself to read something for any reason (book club, content, challenges, etc.), I won't do it 🙃 The best part of being a mood reader though is an almost spiritual alignment when you read the right book at the right time. Nothing compares.
I wouldn’t have considered mood reading as starting and stopping books. Just that if you’re not interested in the book anymore it doesn’t always make sense to continue. And when choosing a next book it’s literally just whatever you’re excited about reading in the moment. The only time I’m in the middle of multiple books is when I’m reading different formats.
I'm definitely a mood reader and for me it's more, "I'm going to read whatever sounds especially interesting right now," sometimes I'll read nothing but romance for a month, or nothing but fantasy for a month or some months, nothing at all. I read about 80% of How To Sell A Haunted House and just couldn't finish. Like you said, it wasn't bad, just wasn't for me.
Being a mood reader, I LOVED this video. I love watching people who usually stick to a TBR try to mood read. Mood reading to me is about picking up the books I'm excited for at any time and I definitely have 3-5 books going at any certain time. Reading mood changes throughout the day! Nabbed a mood reading shirt and I'm obsessed.
This video has brought me so much joy. I’m apparently a mood reader who constantly has 5+ books going at the same time. Watching Kayla try to be more type b was laugh out loud funny for me. I would have no clue how to be more type a or more organized so I give her big props. This was wonderful
I'm a mood reader, but it's so hard to describe what that means! I do typically read several books at once (I'm currently in the middle of seven books), but I don't think that is necessarily what makes a mood reader per se. Sometimes it means that I'm craving a particular genre or trope, so I seek out those genres or tropes. And sometimes it means that I suddenly am sick of a genre and need to take a break from it for a book or two before the mood returns. My "tbr" (which is really just a list of books that intrigue me) is suuuuuper long, as are my Libby holds, because that way I usually have something in reach for whatever strikes me (I don't purchase books that I haven't read and loved, to try to keep a budget, so I am a little more reliant on the Libby gods in that regard). I'm always mystified by readers like you, who have a tbr and can stick to it. An actual tbr is destined to fail for me. It's fun to see that we mood readers are a bit mystifying to you! Thanks for trying the experiment and sharing with us!
I love how Kayla tries so hard to become a mood reader for this video and with that basically does the total opposite! 😂 Really interesting to see how differently reading works for people!
I once commented something similar on a different video and the kindness and support I received in the comments made me feel so loved. Let this be your happy place ❤️❤️❤️ I hope life goes easier on you soon, friend!
I try being organized and make tbr lists but I fail them almost every time! Mood reading is soooo much easier for me, and I definitely love being a mood reader because it means I can read whatever I want whenever I want and that's just such freedom! Mood reading is just the best but all reading is great! 📚
I found this so interesting. I've always considered myself a mood reader but I rarely ever DNF. I just don't preselect what I'm going to read or how many books I'm going to read. When I finish a book and it's time to start a new one, I pick whatever jumps out at me without feeling the need to stick to a planned tbr. Then I may or may not like the book, butI'll generally finish it and then I pick the next book that jumps out at me at that moment. For me, mood reading just means I'm not following a plan.
Loved the video! I am a mood reader and if I set up a strict TBR I end up feeling really resentful of it and don't enjoy the books as much. And the browsing bookstore or library shelves looking for nothing in particular and just seeing what sparks for me is my favorite part of mood reading. To each their own!
DNF as a mood reader has changed for me I only considered a book a DNF if I have no intention of coming back to other wise I'll start and stop book all the time just with the intention to pick them up at time when I think I'll enjoy them more
As a mood reader, I don't force myself to read a certain tbr list. My tbr is my bookshelf! I just read whatever I am most excited for, finish it, and then pick up whatever excites me next! It has made reading a lot less stressful because I didn't feel like I was missing and failing to meet a goal
I think as a mood reader I’m more likely to do what you did - read the first chapter of a book to see if I’m “in the mood” to read it - rather than being someone that frequently DNF’s books halfway through. if I’m slogging through a read and only want to finish it out of spite, I probably will eventually, but u can BET I’ll also start a new one and, like, finish it in a day. motivation is slippery !!
I haven't been making a TBR for the last few months and have been so overwhelmed with what to read next. This video made me realize I gotta go back to having a TBR.
I find it SO interesting how different reading habits are! I’ve tried to be an organised reader, sticking to TBR’s for the month etc. It just does not work for me. I am a mood reader through and through, read what I want when I can/want to. I think it’s important to do what works for you!
Mood reading really is just that-- being in the mood for what you're reading! Sometimes that just looks like one genre but with multiple authors. Sometimes it looks like a ton of DNFs as well as maybe five or six completed reads in a row. I'm definitely glad that you got to experiment with mood reading, even though it didn't end up looking like you envisioned.
This video absolutely SPEAKS to my soul. I'm a mood reader who is in the middle of at least 5 books & thinking about starting another before I finish 1. I wish I could set & stick with a TBR but found that I just can't. So yeah short reading challenges that are strict I just can't do (attempted and failed at them 1 too many times).
I mean this lovingly. watching a logic oriented reader overanalize the "proper" way to mood read was extremely entertaining. 😆 honey, you're overthinking it. Pick a book read till you don't want to anymore (doesn't have to be the best book ever) and then put it down.
That is what I did though, didn't I? 😅 Haha I just had to talk it all through or the video would have been JUST clips of me reading. I feel like I read 10 things I was in the mood for, so I guess there's that even if I messed up the concept haha
I LOVED seeing mood-reading through the eyes of someone who isn’t a mood reader. I’m a mood reader and it annoys me sometimes bc it often means, for me, that I’m starting and stopping multiple books until I find something that sticks. This video showed me different things I could do that I hadn’t considered- like rereading, who would have thought?- to bridge the gap between books. I also don’t reread often due to the new shiny things on my shelf, but this makes so much sense! I recently picked up a reread bc nothing was sticking and I’m enjoying it so much! Anyway, this was a super fun video (and eye opening for me)!
This is one of the funniest Booktube videos I've ever seen. So entertaining to see a Type A person's approach to reading in general, and this experiment in particular.
for me, being a mood reader is about following whims whenever i feel them. if i am in the middle of a book and a new book i'm super excited about comes out, i will put my current read on hold, read the new release and then finish the second half of the book i was reading earlier. i am also one of those people who have no problem with being in the middle of several books at once 😅
Chronic moodreader here. (Editing to say I also have ADHD, so that really doesn't help) I won't stop a book because I feel like I won't give it five stars, especially if I'm enjoying the book! I usually DNF because I don't like the writing style or I didn't read the synopsis completely and didn't realize what the content was (i.e. too triggering, boring subject, etc). But the times that I've been very deep into the book and just wanted to quit but kept reading to finish it, I've come out with some kind of disdain for the book. Not a bad book, it's just like overeating to clear the plate and having a stomachache later.
i'm a mix - a mood reader with a general plan. i like to have lots out of the library at once to choose from. so funny how you're like planning what youre in the mood for. i get that.
It‘s so funny to me that we‘re polar opposites but you‘re still one of my favourite booktuber’s. I‘m a mood reader and can‘t stick to a tbr if my life depended on it. And one of my favourite things to do is to go to a bookshop and browse for hours. Without any idea what I want or need. Also our reading tastes are vastly different. I‘m an adult epic / high fantasy girlie and although one of my favourite genres is horror our tastes don‘t align. But your vibes and videos are so cozy and heartwarming that I love watching your channel.
I’m a mood reader and my sweet spot is 3 books on the go at once. Usually 1 audio, 1 physical and 1 both. Usually different genres but I am known to read 3 high fantasy books at the same time 😂😂 I can also take years to get to a book I preordered and was super excited about getting. I NEVER get a book in the post and then pick it straight up…. If I’m liking it I finish it. I only DNF when I’m actively hating it or really, REALLY can’t be bothered to finish
I've never seen you so stressed out by a tbr even when you face one the size of a mountain. Loved this video because in a weird way it turned out to be the most "Lala" video ever
I am definitely a mood reader! I rarely DNF books though. I always am ready multiple books at once and for me--- mood reading just means that of those 5 or so books, I pick up or listen to whatever I'm feeling at that particular moment. I have actually been trying to be more organized. I often have a hard time rating books because I know my mood affects that as well.
Your definition of a Mood Reader is way different and deeper from mine 🤣 For me; it's just picking up the next read without planning, just picking the most interesting or most excited for at that time. I could never be a mood reader. I'm not as strict as you. But I /need/ to have an idea of my next 2-3 books at least. I don't have to follow through (I usually do though) but I need a lil list of what I might read next.
I’m a mood reader but I only read one book at a time. If I’m in the mood for a thriller, that’s what I pick up. If I’m in the mood for a fantasy, I pick one up. Sometimes I will put a book down if I’m not enjoying it but almost always pick it back up when I’m in the mood for that specific genre and end up loving it. Mood reading to me is not having multiple books on the go but just reading with no agenda. I envy those who can make and stick to a monthly tbr. I can’t make tbrs and stick to them because I never know what genre I want to pick up until I’m hunting for my next new book.
I literally said “wow her shirt is so cute I wonder if she linked to it in the description” NOT EVEN REALIZING YOU DESIGNED IT! Immediately ordered I’m obsessed!!
Mood reading is weird, I never know what I’m going to read next, and choose based on just… feeling. I look at my collection until a book ~calls to me~, then try it out, and from the first words that I read I can tell if is going to work or not. Also, my mood can change before I actually finish the book, so yeah, I’m technically reading 7 books right now, but really I’m reading 2. If I try to plan my reading ahead, I can do it for like Readathons for… about 5 books, but the reading slump will come if I keep doing it for too long 🫠
This describes me as a mood reader for sure! Including the bit about planning TBRs for readathons (or book clubs or content) - I can do it but if I do it too much or for too long without a break, I’m gonna end up in a reading slump.
I just caught up with the rest of the video and what happened for you with a house with good bones and the hallow kind is exactly what being a mood reader is about. Don't ever feel pressure to finish a book if you're not in the mood for it. You can DNF completely or revisit it in a day or two and go read another book. Like I am currently reading 4 different books, a historical romance, a six of crows reread, a dark academia and a horror. And whatever I'm in the mood for that day I'll continue with that book. I can be reading multiple different books in a day because my mood keeps changing lol. Also your rereading experience with bunny is exactly my experience with six of crows right now hahahha just a rush of good vibes
You are definitely not a mood reader… and that’s totally okay! Also the way you delivered, “My mommy got me this for Christmas… and I killed it” made me chuckle
As a mood reader I think you did a great job for me it's that I just pick up books I'm most excited for first and I only DNF if it's going to be less then 3 stars
I’m a mood reader. I don’t have a TBR with a deadline. I am terrible at reading challenges and reading book club picks in time. But, I will read a book club pick and watch a live show at a later time. I read multiple books at once. I tend to DNF if I just don’t care for the book, if I don’t like plot or characters. Although, I’m known to soft DNF where I will get back to a book eventually… because library loan due dates and inability to renew. It’s so interesting to see how planned out your TBR is (especially long-term) and your ability to finish all your book choices by specific dates.
I love the chaotic nature of this video! Glad you found some good reads along the way ✨ I plan everything in my life, except my reading. I read for enjoyment and that, for me, means reading what calls to me the most when I have free time. I end up reading multiple books at the same time, puting them down for a while and coming back to them (even weeks after), or DNFing if I have lost interest.
so glad to see you reread and relove bunny! i read it because of you and it’s my favorite book of all time. i just did my first ever reread late last year and it was such a treat. so excited for rouge!
As a mood reader, I usually only read one book at a time. I don't like challenges or strict TBRs. I just ~know~ what I'm in the mood for - nonfiction, fantasy, horror, etc. I just get a vibe from by bookshelf and am drawn to a book.
I have general tbrs and then pick from there depending on mood. Right now I've put a whole bunch of books in a pile and pick out as I go what I'm in the mood for middle grade March. That way I am still reducing my tbr but not stuck on a book I might not be in the mood for. I also always have multiple books in my progress. I read nonfiction on my commute where I have dedicated time with no interruptions but I rarely read this at home. After a day at work Im tired and want to pick up an easy fantasy. I also put books down part way through and come back when I'm more in the right frame of mind for it.
I love how Kayla tries out moodreading and still manages to do it in the most analytical/logical way possible.
Literally my thoughts seeing steps 1-9 hahaha I love Kayla and her methods but it made me chuckle
My thoughts exactly, like, she literally had to plan her mood reading 😂
for me, being a mood reader is less about starting and stopping books than it is about reading books i’m most excited about/interested in. this usually means that ones i have purchased most recently get read the quickest, though!
Same! I can’t follow a TBR for more than a week, but I mostly finish whatever I’m reading.
Same!
Agreed!
Yeah this sums it up way better than I tried to! And I finish my chores but it may take me 6 months to do so 🤫
Nothing beats finishing a book and then being able to get back into a book you're halfway through.
That is just so chaotic! 😅 I love it.
ESPECIALLY if the book you left halfway wasn't really to your liking and then when you come back to it, you see everything differently and end up loving it 😂
Yes!!! This!!
Nothing beats your library letting you know that book you only read half of 6 months ago is now available again and wait it's the 3rd time since you asked for it to be delivered later the other 2 times because you weren't in the mood for it, but finally, you are and ready to finish it!
Yeees, this is everything, the best feeling ever! 😍💚
As a mood reader, Kayla explaining how she chooses books blows my mind. I am in general awe.
I feel like I’m a mood reader, but not in the sense that I read multiple books at once depending on my mood, but more that I let my mood choose what I read in the moment regardless of tbr
Same here!
Same! I've tried reading more than one book at a time, but it stresses me out. 😅
I relate! 😊😊
Same
I have had as many as 7 books going at once (recently)...admittedly that is overkill and it stresses me out if it goes that far.
I’m usually reading multiple books at once. 1-2 physical books, one audiobook, and 1-2 ebooks.
YES! Same.
The worst is when I can’t figure out what I’m in the mood for so I end up reading nothing because nothing feels right
Agreed, mood reading can be so all or none. I absolutely hate the lull moments when nothing is hitting.
Me too every time I start a book it will be whatever I'm in the mood for but I only read one at a time
Exactly 💯!
i feel like about the 23 minute mark is when you started to describe what mood reading is for me, it's playing off the last book i read, either i loved it and i need to build off of it and continue the mood or i've had enough of that and i want something completely different, i feel like a lot of the time the last book i read determines what the next book i read is going to be
This.
Totally agree! I feel like you summed up how I “mood read”perfectly!
Yes, exactly this!
#topcomment
Amen
Agreed. It made it all about what we don't do, rather than about we do do. It was weird.
Same!!!
Same!
SAME. If I force a book, my brain throws a tantrum and won't let me read anything afterward. It is the worst.
That's exactly how I feel. I would never be a youtuber because of this
This was like watching a video of how I feel making decisions as a mood reader lmao
i cant always tell what is me as a mood reader and what is ADHD, but sometimes even if I'm enjoying a book midway but I'm even slightly bored or my mood shifts, I will drop it to start something new.
Mood reader but heavily influenced by which of my many library holds drops into my lap haha
same here!!!
I’m exactly the same! If I start a book, that is the book I am reading until it’s finished lol
Some of the criteria the internet said you need to match to be a mood reader just sounded like pure chaos to me lol.
the preview was exactly what i go through when im reading, mood reader perfection
As a mood reader I can say that I definitely DNF at least half the books I start. It means I read more five star books though! If I’m not in the mood for it I figure I have better things to do with my time. Lol 7:12
Now you get my entire existence as a mood reader, it’s exhausting lmao
I think what non mood readers don't get is that there are no rules when it comes to mood reading. If someone wants to mood read, don't follow guidelines of an article, because in that way you are already structuring your reading.😅 I think mood reading starts with the question "am I in the mood to read?" (which might sound weird for "TBR readers" 🤭). And if you want to read, you just pick up whatever is calling to you the most. It's like you are following your heart and not your brain.😁
I'd say it is easier to become a "TBR reader" than a mood reader, because in a way mood readers can also organize their reading.
This!
Ultimately, we all want to get lost in a world but all go about it in our own way.
i’m a plan-reader and i love how kayla explained how she picks books because it’s so similar to how i pick books!
50 minutes of Kayla falling at being a mood reader 😂 I appreciate the struggle
I can relate to you in that you chose the most systematic ways to find your mood reads ever. Seems very in character 😂
Thank you!
I love that Kayla took Mood Reading and organized it hahahah :) You're the best Kayla!
I’m a mood reader and I just grab whatever I’m in the mood for and yes I do read multiple book with the intention to finish them not DNF ing them
I never have a tbr as I would never stick to it. I am definitely a mood reader, but more than like likely read a book straight after similar to the one I have read.
I didn’t even know someone could think about so many factors when choosing what to read, I just look at my bookshelf and go with the ~vibes~ 😅
@@Melissa_writer Yes, exactly!
You nailed it for me, too!
as a complete and utter mood reader this is such fun video concept. its funny how much our readings and often personality align but then sometimes you are literally at the very other end of the spectrum. 😆🥰
Not Lala trying to be a mood reader by making a mood reader tbr loool which is exceptionally on brand
I started binging older videos, what a treat to find you uploaded!
This video has informed me that I am a mood reader. No wonder tbrs never really stuck 100%.
i loved this video! also can't get over the fact that your hair is the most PERFECT color. what a beautiful person you are
My 4 month old LOVES you. Every time I watch one of your videos she smiles and coos at you, and just kick kick kicks.
I love how Kayla tries so hard to become a mood reader for this video and with that basically does the total opposite! 😂 Really interesting to see how differently reading works for people!
hi kayla, i’ve been having a rough night and it made me really happy to get your post notification 💜💜
also i loved how beautiful we were too!!!
I once commented something similar on a different video and the kindness and support I received in the comments made me feel so loved. Let this be your happy place ❤️❤️❤️ I hope life goes easier on you soon, friend!
@@anjalibhat14 thank you!!!
I'm so sorry you're having a rough time my friend, I hope things are looking up for you today 😔💕
💓💓 i just t finished two difficult exams so that definitely helped !!
I am making the chaotic choice to mood watch this video instead of do my grad school homework and I WILL NOT REGRET IT
I haven't been making a TBR for the last few months and have been so overwhelmed with what to read next.
Only Kayla would become a mood reader by reading the first chapter of a hundred books. Love it!
The second you said “I genuinely think I’d be interested in reading if I read the same genre for a month” I felt a video forming
But your vibes and videos are so cozy and heartwarming that I love watching your channel.
yay for giovannis room :) and Bunny! just saw that its going to be adapted which is gonna be nuts.
The timing of that announcement could not have been better !! 🐰💕 I'm on such a Bunny high rn
I’m a mood reader and my sweet spot is 3 books on the go at once. Usually 1 audio, 1 physical and 1 both. Usually different genres but I am known to read 3 high fantasy books at the same time 😂😂
I can also take years to get to a book I preordered and was super excited about getting.
Your desire/need for control and planning is EXTREMELY relatable. Thank you for sharing 💚😭
I literally said “wow her shirt is so cute I wonder if she linked to it in the description” NOT EVEN REALIZING YOU DESIGNED IT! Immediately ordered I’m obsessed!!
As someone who is usually a mood reader…your thought process stresses me out 😂 No thoughts Kayla…just vibes
