Hello from the driver of the Mach-E Rally in the background of that last stop. You might want Porsche check the car. My Ford is seamless in the blend of regen and friction braking. The heated steering wheel button at the bottom/back of the steering wheel is standard on all Porches to my knowledge. It is certainly that way in my Taycan. At 17:20 Dave talks about the passenger screen, allowing videos to be played and blocked from the driver, which is a true statement, but that is done only when the car is in motion and a video is playing. When parked the driver can view the screen. They use a liquid crystal alignment to block the angled viewing. My two cents. If you need to charge in Omaha, I think the new-ish Evgo is the best of the three non-Tesla options. The one Dave used is way too far off of the interstate. The Council Bluffs station often has derated and inoperable chargers. The Evgo has better uptime and has good restaurant options nearby.
Woo hoo, great video!! Why did Kyle have you put on winter tires before leaving? Surely they come w some range penalty not to mention lugging all that extra weight around!
Major lake effect snows were predicted on my journey by Cleveland and Buffalo that weekend And sure enough they got slammed I managed to slip through it unscathed on Sunday (part 3) by staying just to the south
Hey Dave, Audi etron has the paddle shifter to invoke regen, works quite well. And what's wrong with just taking your right foot off the accelerator and tapping the brake with it?
Nothing wrong with it as it’s by design I just wish off pedal regen was invoked without having to do that Just make it an optional setting like in the PPE new Audi Q6 etron
How does Porsche not figure out the pedal calibration? My Nissan leaf blends friction brakes and regen on the brake pedal perfectly smoothly when one pedal is turned off
18:27 combo toggles and screen controls. Nice. Seems to be like a what my wife's step-dad, R, said about his Kia K4 EX (ICE), about a $24K USD MSRP. .... I'll posit these must be somehow better ... though in truth, R also said he likes the Kia more than his Prius and his Jag.
Hahaha, glad your Hardee’s meal was good that night, not far from where I live. I probably would not have gone in if I didn’t see any cars in the parking lot. I am weird like that😆
interesting that you feel the brakes, cuz when i drove it, it was incredibily smooth. I couldn't tell at all. whereas when i drive my wife's hybrid kia, the brake decel rate goes up n down with downshift and regen/physical brake transitions...making it hard to predict how much brake pressure to use. I never felt that way with the Macan.
Love the videos. Why not charge and precondition the car while having breakfast? Would have be a much better efficiency and a warmer battery in the first place
Dave are you sure the winter tires are the exact correct size for the car? If they are a bit off the stock diameter that can be causing your speedometer variation
Nice Dave! Day 2 was super interesting! Btw, my 2024 Mini Cooper SE (Oxford England version) has a physical toggle for switching back and forth from strong “regen” to soft “regen”. I think that’s what Porsche needs. Your charging stops are “edge of your seat” content. One unanswered question about day 2, did you grab some level 2 at the hotel? I always go to 100 if the hotel has level 2.
Charging stations are so much busier now than they used to be! There wasn't a station in this video that didn't have someone else charging with Dave, even in the middle of nowhere Iowa.
Those last few EA stations were probably shared 350 chargers and since other people were charging it is shared, so that's why you only saw a peak of 175
Opening was hilarious. Dave just finished a Holiday Inn Express breakfast and is excited about a nearby Burger King. As his wife watches the video, what do you think she is saying?
@@joetacchino4470 Correct on cardiologist. On the other hand, maybe he suggested two breakfasts just to get a rise out of us or Kathy. Ha..ha..ha. The problem with heavy eating on road trips is there’s no exercise and most people get sleepy.
I remember that Kyle said that once the new tires break in (I guess he said 1500 miles) you will get a better efficiency. That been said, that could probably the cause that the router took that weird decisions like charging from 71 to 75 and asking you to charge at 37%.. Just thinking here. I could be wrong. Topography changes too.
David, why Porsche would really need so many complications with one pedal driving? The most elegant solution is implemented in our Chevrolet Bolt EUV: a button close to drive and reverse buttons. If button is on the full stop one pedal driving works with keeping the car stopped if the accelerator pedal is not touched. On the contrary when the button is off the car drives like an ICE car. Why would anyone play with various degrees of regeneration? I find one pedal driving useful in town but really annoying on highways. I understand that in Tesla there is no way to disengage one pedal driving? That would be an absolute no go to me.
So glad you tried Hardee’s Dave. The chain has been around since the 60s and I have been eating there since I was a kid in the 70s. The chain saw major growth in the Southeast during that period until its leadership Jerry Richardson left the company to pursue his dream of bringing an NFL franchise to the Carolinas. The chain was sold and is now owned by Carl Jr’s parent. It’s sad to see them decline because their food is very good and cooked to order, and most of their locations have been updated and renovated. I knew you would like it.
Lack of one pedal driving is disappointing. I like paddles that adjust regen as needed to stop slowly or quickly. We’ve got them in expensive EQS and low cost EV6. Sadly, not in our Tesla.
Dave - Regen and 1 Pedal driving. I have an 8 month old 2024 Mini Countryman S E with a 64kWh usable battery and BMW has a nice way to give you optional 1 pedal or coasting or 3 stages of regen or adaptive regen (auto variable regen depending on what type of road you are on - motorway, dual carriageway, normal roads or city driving). To get one ideal/ max regen you set the gear selector to B mode, if you leave the car in D then in the settings you can have 5 options of regen - off, little, medium, heavy (same as in 1 pedal B Mode ) or adaptive. So if you like creep ir coasting with minimal regen/recuperation you can or you can go full on one pedal - one disadvantage of using B/ 1 pedal mode is that when regen is on then the brake lights come on too, in the no or lighter regen settings in D mode you don’t show the brake lights if you ease off the accelerator pedal.
I have two options for regen on my 2024 Mini Cooper SE (Oxford England version), using a nice toggle switch. Porsche can call BMW for the secret sauce!
If the Macan is anything like my Audi Etron, using the brake pedal creates regen (or the two steering wheel paddles if you choose to use them) and the regen is seen on the drivers display. Only under hard/emergency braking do the friction brakes come into play, otherwise using the brake pedal gives you infinite variable control of regen. Having driven one pedal cars, mostly Teslas, I prefer the Audi way. Not every EV should be a remodel of a Tesla.
Yes, driving with both feet - left for break, right for accelerator is difficult since the brain has hard time processing the mixed messages and give mixed commands. I tried, it's quite difficult. I found much easier driving with left foot entirely, it took me 2 min to learn when I broke my right foot.
One idea to give you a cheaper cost for charging. If you have navigation enabled on a trip with charger stops, give you a 2% discount for using in car route navigation.
The overspeed is the german way of keeping you legal. It's a state of mind that you're speeding, but you're still legal. Also, with the winter tires, did you keep the stagger or did you square the tires off and not keep the ratio within the same window of the 21"?
Staggered on the Winters for the Macan. As a side note, for my Model 3 Performance, I dropped wheel size to 18” and did square setup Martians with Hakka
Kyle’s range test and the government range figure is 300+ miles for the Macan. Based on multiple legs here, it looks like the vehicle’s range on this particular trip is about 200-220 miles. Quite a difference.
@ Yes, higher speed for sure, and the lower temperature likely made a big difference. I was just surprised it was +/-30% lower range. The weight of the tires is about the weight of one large male passenger, and so I’d think that wouldn’t be too impactful.
I am soo looking forward to all your upcoming videos (and this one). Not just as usual but because we are seriously looking at buying one of these as our next car. I'm about halfway through and I recognise where you are at charging in Omaha. Definitely off the highway But I don't recall an EA being there when we visited soon two years ago. (Great city if you have young kids. Their downtown is full of great play parks, walk over to Iowa and play too) We've driven the Turbo but my wife's biggest complaints are: Off throttle regen is nonexistent even with re-gen on, and the throttle mapping even in sport plus is not aggressive enough. She doesn't like she has to push her foot down way too much before the car takes off. (We have just one car and she is the one driving it on a day to day basis) Being past the excitement from driving a new car I am starting to feel we might pass on this one. We live in the UK and I'll be off to the dealer tomorrow with a measuring tape to have a look at the boot. I'm starting to worry the Porsche packaging is sadly not good enough. We own our XC60 PHEV (but drive more BEVs as rental on our travels) so are not in a rush to change, but we want more space on the inside, but not more space on the outside in the city....
Dave, you grew up in New City? So did my Dad. You’re a little younger than him..did you take driver’s Ed from Jerry Eckerd (sp?). My Aunt and Dad have so many stories about him.
59:50 Tesla didnt have a choice with the forced eye monitoring and strictness to it. The NHTSA forced them to do it over Tesla’s objections as part of their FSD /Autopilot investigation. That was a “voluntary” recall that was going to be mandated if Tesla didnt agree to it.
Great video, Dave !!! I agree with some things Porsche did amazing, others your scratching your head. There is no light on the charging door, the key farb 😢
Note to editor: Please mitigate the flickering using a plugin or blend the video across multiple timelines offset by one frame each. I think this can be done with the video on 3 timelines, each with a 33% alpha and then apply additive blending.
Porsche is slow to adopt it because the Tesla SC can't charge them as fast. Actual V4 SCs will, but they are a while off from being everywhere. Plus, it was always going to be that native NACS ports won't arrive on vehicles until into 2025. There will be quite a few coming in the next 6 months.

Waze is GPS and accelerometer calculated from your phones chips. Its extremely precise. The cars speed is calcibrated for specific tires at specific tire pressure and any deviation from those calibrated value will make the displayed speed not match the GPS speed and its very easy to get tire or pressure changes. Never mind he switched out his OE tires for the Nokian so the screen display isnt even calibrated to the setup he has going now.
Right foot -> Brake and Accelerator, Left foot -. Clutch. OLD SCHOOL when there weren't many automatic transmission. When I took my driver's license exam, you had to have a car with manual transmission. Now lots of people use the left foot for braking.
I despise left foot brake drivers! They almost always have their foot resting lightly on the brake pedal, therefore making the brake lights be on. You never know for sure when they are braking. Driving that way needs to be illegal!
1:02:44 not a Taycan, LOL ... I'd rather drive a Taycan than a Macan, anyway, so I wouldn't take exception to the charger's misidentifying me were I to find my self in a Macan -- which I won't, oc.
Well Dave, our 2023 Tesla Model Y AWD Long Range in white with white seats (same car as Cathy's last Model Y) it will automatically put the car in park as soon as you open the drivers door, come on Porsche, this is not rocket science to make the vehicle operate more safely!
I did a lot of manual transmission driving even showed one of my sisters how to drive a Datsun 510 with a 4 speed manual transmission so she could pass her driving test. My own first brand new car was a 1975 Red VW Rabbit with it's 5 speed transmission, did a lot of rally driving using the heal/tow to control the car at high speed around corners, loved that car it was just a blast. I did refit the carpeting with bright Orange shag carpet and made a boogie Rabbit!!
You should definitely do it. I did it myself 6 months ago after wanting to for 3 or 4 years. At 0.9 percent + 7500 tax credit it was a deal finally worth taking. Don’t forget to get a referral code. Let me know if you need one.
Seeing there are so many "little" issues the cost of the Porsche does not make it worth the costs. It also is an energy hog from what Dave is saying...
Coming from an Acura RDX to a Volvo V60 Polestar, a deal breaker would be an interface not updateable. I.e. Tesla, Google powered, etc. The Macan screens looked dated now and other manufactures are far ahead. Daily use is greatly enhanced by these updated interfaces.
I'll suffer the stiffer ride, lack of prestige and seat massager and toggle switches and really cool roof stuff, to happily keep my one-pedal-driving, better efficiency, better route planning, and the much lower price of my Y. But I am enjoying your enjoyment of the car, Dave -- I'll get my Porsche jollies vicariously through you and others. Enjoy the ride!
Agreed. I’d never buy an EV without one pedal driving. Much less one for $80-100K. Defeats one of the biggest advantages of going electric. Hopefully it gets added in a software update later for what seems to be an otherwise really good car.

I don’t remember the guys name But I do remember him balancing an egg on a golf tee mounted on the dash to teach smooth acceleration and braking
It has logic, both pedals in, it will ignore the ACCELERATOR PEDAL
59:50 Tesla didnt have a choice with the forced eye monitoring and strictness to it. The NHTSA forced them to do it over Tesla’s objections as part of their FSD /Autopilot investigation. That was a “voluntary” recall that was going to be mandated if Tesla didnt agree to it.
5 mins! Should have pushed it to the next stop. I do that in the Y all the time
New tires and cold temperatures plus wind factor hurts efficiency.
I am the editor and am always looking to learn You sound like a great teacher. Interesting advice !!
Turbo for a German also stands for "fast". Maybe that's where Porsche is coming from?
Not “splash and dash” but “Juice and Goose”
everytime i catchup with dave he has a new vehicle
Oh, You tune in monthly! 😂😂😂
@@js3085 😆
As nice as the Mayan seems to be, the software operating system is a dealbreaker. Also why no NACS charging port in late 2024?
Porsche is slow to adopt it because the Tesla SC can't charge them as fast. Actual V4 SCs will, but they are a while off from being everywhere. Plus, it was always going to be that native NACS ports won't arrive on vehicles until into 2025. There will be quite a few coming in the next 6 months.

Your new tires are probably the reason for your speedo being off
At 52:39 Rivian Amazon Electric Van😊
Ya, those turkey sausages are rough! Love Daves’ road trip videos!
BTW Porsche cars are known to go 2-3mph below the speedometer speed, same goes in my ICE macan 🤣🚗
@@hulz99 it’s a German brand thing
Compared to the rest of Nebraska, options in Omaha are abysmal overall. New Electrify station is so out of the way for a road trip.
I was on the same road the same day, and we stopped in Lincoln to allow us to make Council Bluffs.
I would like to see Dave sitting behind Kathy in the Macan. Backseat 😢.
Have you not considered that maybe your Waze’s speed display may be the one that’s off?
Nope it’s Gps
Waze is GPS and accelerometer calculated from your phones chips. Its extremely precise. The cars speed is calcibrated for specific tires at specific tire pressure and any deviation from those calibrated value will make the displayed speed not match the GPS speed and its very easy to get tire or pressure changes. Never mind he switched out his OE tires for the Nokian so the screen display isnt even calibrated to the setup he has going now.
Did I read that right..167 mile range in the cold? 😬😳
Right foot -> Brake and Accelerator, Left foot -. Clutch. OLD SCHOOL when there weren't many automatic transmission. When I took my driver's license exam, you had to have a car with manual transmission. Now lots of people use the left foot for braking.
I still drive a manual
It may be suggesting that it is turbo charging not turbo, charging or very fast charging
I despise left foot brake drivers! They almost always have their foot resting lightly on the brake pedal, therefore making the brake lights be on. You never know for sure when they are braking. Driving that way needs to be illegal!
Whoever's doing the editing needs to replace the current music with more Austin Powers themed music ... feels fitting for big Dave! Mamacan baby!
I do all my own editing You don’t like my music? :)
@@outofspecdave1554 I just think Austin Powers / swinging 60s pop would be fitting!
you are a legend Dave!
beautiful care, envious
love road tripping with you
1:02:44 not a Taycan, LOL ... I'd rather drive a Taycan than a Macan, anyway, so I wouldn't take exception to the charger's misidentifying me were I to find my self in a Macan -- which I won't, oc.
No 'one peddle driving'!!!
Dave, how could you choose Burger King over Runza?!
Easy… Since I don’t even know what Runza is!
@@outofspecdave1554 You need to give it a try next time you're in Nebraska!
Always carry your portable #Starlink for internet 24 hour acess
Porsche the best 👍
Should really be 'flash and dash'.
Well Dave, our 2023 Tesla Model Y AWD Long Range in white with white seats (same car as Cathy's last Model Y) it will automatically put the car in park as soon as you open the drivers door, come on Porsche, this is not rocket science to make the vehicle operate more safely!
Auto port selected to avoid vandals breaking it off when you’re charging.
Interesting motivation and clever if this is really a risk where you charge
I did a lot of manual transmission driving even showed one of my sisters how to drive a Datsun 510 with a 4 speed manual transmission so she could pass her driving test. My own first brand new car was a 1975 Red VW Rabbit with it's 5 speed transmission, did a lot of rally driving using the heal/tow to control the car at high speed around corners, loved that car it was just a blast. I did refit the carpeting with bright Orange shag carpet and made a boogie Rabbit!!
Volt and jolt
No way I would trade my tesla for this, especially at that price.
The more I watch the more I want a Tesla 😂
You should definitely do it. I did it myself 6 months ago after wanting to for 3 or 4 years. At 0.9 percent + 7500 tax credit it was a deal finally worth taking. Don’t forget to get a referral code. Let me know if you need one.
Flash and dash
Seeing there are so many "little" issues the cost of the Porsche does not make it worth the costs. It also is an energy hog from what Dave is saying...
1:16:59 Maybe I'm wrong...Maybe they shut early...maybe they got SHUT DOWN. 🤣
Juice and jam
Zap & Crap…Juice & Deuce…Plug & Chug.
O man I needed this just now Thanks ! LOL
41:25 it's kinda disturbing that a brand new Porsche has a less accurate speedometer than my 20 year old wrangler with close to 200k miles on it
Could be caused by the snow tires if they weren’t the exact size of OEM’s.
Charge and charge lol😊😂
Coming from an Acura RDX to a Volvo V60 Polestar, a deal breaker would be an interface not updateable. I.e. Tesla, Google powered, etc. The Macan screens looked dated now and other manufactures are far ahead. Daily use is greatly enhanced by these updated interfaces.
his macan screen is the latest and greatest for porsche. it's google/android based.
I had an advert every 3 mins. What the hell is going on.
@@scottstowell7 In addition, I've become practically addicted to FSD, so I wouldn't buy a car that would not support that.
I think this channel should be renamed to Out Of Spec BK.
Dave how bout if you could eat in car drive to get food then take it to the charger. Kyle talks about not walking to someone get food then charge.
" Tesla, just does it right, i'm sorry guys"
What are you sorry about???
