    Just did a 2200 mile Cali roadtrip in my lucid air touring. Just an excellent car. I was only getting about 220 miles of safe range at 80+ (leaving 15% charge left) which was a little disappointing but the car is still an excellent road tripper. Soaks up bumps, love the blind spot warning, great UI. Hope Lucid makes it!

    Yeah, I get sometimes too defensive about Lucid. No, it's not a stock thing. I just hear so much FUD from the Tesla folks and the EV haters that it bugs me. The car is just so good in so many ways.
    Having said my disclaimer: Get over the charging curve. Lucid has to warranty these batteries and I bought my early production Air GT with the intent to keep it for years. For context, I bought a fully optioned 2011 Nissan LEAF. It was made before the first production Model S. It was and remains a well built and fully functional car still on the road, 3rd owner and 3rd warranty battery replacement.
    I can't talk about my work/IP with lithium batteries, but thermal management and dis/charging c-rate is what can kill them if mismanaged. I am 100% fine with Lucid limiting my charging speed to a rate that helps the cells live at least to their 8-year warranty. Get back to me in 5 years about how Porsche batteries are doing. A car is not a cell phone. How are the batteries in your 2016 cell phone? Cars are not 'disposable'. Protecting and preserving the battery cells is key to ensuring the long life of the vehicle.

    • @joemcdonough7509
      @joemcdonough7509 21 день тому

      When it comes to battery life, at least I feel confident in the 20-80% rule. I've got a 5 year old e-bike with a lithium battery that I have maintained the rule consistently. It's lost less than 5% of its original life. In fact, that's merely a guess because I can't measure the loss because it's so little.

    • @Miata822
      @Miata822 20 днів тому

      @@joemcdonough7509 Yes! A well designed lithium battery can last for Much longer than most people think. Key to that life is how the battery is treated: Temperature, Charging C-rate Rate, Discharge C-rate Rate, and storage charge. A 20-80 e-bike battery may last longer than the bike itself if kept from extreme temperatures. You're never charging that at 1,000V & 350A. The Lucid can charge at that rate, but Lucid engineers limit the combination of voltage, amperage, and temperature that the battery cells can be exposed to. Your e-bike and i-Phone do the same, but my unfortunate 2011 LEAF did not. That meant that car got 3 new warranty replacement batteries in its 8 year warranty. I'm glad Lucid is more careful about limiting how fast I can wear out the battery. Good post, by the way. Thanks.

    The Achilles heal for the Lucid in the I-90 surge was that it's efficiency crashes as it approaches 80 mph. Jordan in the new Model 3 expressed confidence he would have beaten the Lucid even if it hadn't had run out battery at one point.

    • @Miata822
      @Miata822 27 днів тому +2

      What killed the Lucid in the I-90 race was Dave's shallow charging, trying to imitate his kid's technique. As Kyle hints in the conclusion of this video, the Lucid works best to get a good deep charge and then drive until the driver needs a bio-break. When the Lucid reaches 50% that's about the same energy as the Model 3 at 80%. In the race the Lucid kept having to slow down because they hadn't charged enough (not even counting the backtracking because they failed to read the display or the running out because they trusted a youtube video more than what the car was telling them).

    Always fun to watch your videos (sped up, of course 😉). There are definitely some things Lucid can be doing better, software in particular, and you have a lot of valid criticisms. However, I think you should cut them some slack on a few things:
    * it's winter and you are driving fast. Your efficiency was about what I would expect - maybe even a bit better.
    * as others have pointed out, bailing out when the charging drops to levels that most other cars can only dream about is definitely ironic.
    * Lucid just started the "Compromise Nothing" campaign. I don't think they meant it to be retroactive.
    * you should consider food options other than those immediately adjacent to the charging stations if you want to improve the quality of your meals on road trips. We usually plan our charging around at least 1 meal stop.
    It would be nice to see you ACTUALLY take a chill road trip someday!
    I know you take some heat for your approach to shooting and post, but I for one appreciate the "fast & furious" approach to getting lots of content out quickly. 😊

    I'd definitely hope for better than 3.5 mi/kWh out of a Lucid Air. That was the roundtrip efficiency for my Chevy Bolt EV after 150,000 miles of >80% freeway driving. I just don't see how the Air GT is capable of over 500 miles in highway driving, which is the only time that range really matters.

      @@dRadddd I'm referring to Kyle's comments about the lifetime efficiency of 3.5 mi/kWh. Perhaps, at 70 mph in ideal conditions, it can hit 4.3 mi/kWh, but my point was, the lifetime efficiency is no better than my Bolt EV, which is not an aerodynamic hatchback.

    • @RedvinezYGO
      @RedvinezYGO 28 днів тому

      @@dRadddd I wasnt basing it on just this drive, just based on dozens of trips I've seen I'm generally disappointed by the efficiency at real highway speeds.
      The 500 mi comes at 70 mph and good conditions, seems like if you go 85~ with moderate conditions you'll drop efficiency way more than a lot of other cars which strikes me as odd cause I would assume that aerodynamics matter more at higher speeds.
      In the Out of Spec 10% Challenge the Lucid Air GT and Kyle's beaten up Model S Plaid tied in efficiency and the LR is much more efficient than the Plaid

    1:07:25 This hasn't been my experience over the last 8 years of traveling in an EV. If anything, I think I might eat "healthier" on the road, though that's an argument for another day. What I've found is that some charging providers are simply better at placing their chargers than others, and it's why, on the whole, I've found EVgo to have far, far better site placement than most of the other charging providers, including Electrify America and Tesla. The people who also eat on long trips in ICE cars actually end up "wasting" almost as much time as EV owners by making meal stops, but the difference is, those ICE drivers are almost always making discrete charging stops AND discrete meal stops.

    Just had this epiphany: Yes, arriving at stations with such a high state of charge doesn't make sense, *if you know how Lucid batteries work*. They probably designed this system simply around the idea of not freaking out people that have range anxiety, and don't understand that it's not a bad thing running your pack down to 5%. But that further amplifies the need for a setting where you can design your desired arrival percentage.

    It's much better than their gas offering with people not stopping to even go into the stores most of the times because they have to wait in line for so long, and then leave after topping off. With charging, people leave their EV's charging and have time to go in even if they didn't plan to shop there. It's simple retail business 101. Just get them to come inside the stores and you'll find they'll end up buying something.

      I'm a huge Lucid fan from before you heard of Atieva. I hold more shares than you do. Understand that i mean the best for both you and I when I say that posting childish pumper spam like this is counterproductive to both the Lucid brand image and the future value of Lucid. Adults look at posts like this and are turned off, think Lucid may not be a serious company. Your posts hurt Lucid, it's image, and ultimately your own share value. I love my Lucid Air. If you want to help the company just go buy one.

      LOL Average.. I dont think you know what you are talking about. It has twice the efficiency of any other car in the market. The new Model 3 that they benchmarked was a RWD model. Same as the Taycan. The werent driving the Pure here. so 3.0 mi kw/h in the cold and elevation is pretty darn efficient

    Way too hyper about charging speeds. Just drive a combustion vehicle and drive straight thru. Owning an EV requires some patience. EVs do not do well in cold temps, how would you not know this. Imagine if it was 0F.

    Kyle I understand the Lucid came with free charging. But how much does it actually cost to charge from 10% to 100%?

  • @cctanner007
    @cctanner007 25 днів тому

    @kyle - for each trip, you should total the time spent charging vs the overall trip time. That is the most useful stat… so people can decide how relevant the extra couple minutes charging is

  • @cctanner007
    @cctanner007 25 днів тому

    Did the SLC -> San Jose this summer in the Y performance… tesla had me charging every 2 hours or so… still beat the Google Maps estimate by a couple minutes… but would have liked the extra range of the lucid to do every 3 hours instead… will try the new Lucid this summer…
