I think you're overthinking this a little. There's a couple reasons to do a Direct next month: 1. More Switch games are likely being made by partners. 2. Nintendo needs a place to talk about MP4 3. Nintendo likely has more Switch 1 games coming. February directs are usually mostly used to reveal or give updates for games coming through the summer. Nintendo probably also wants to keep April's direct focused on Switch 2 exclusive/enhanced software.
They also haven't talked about Xenoblade X's new epilogue, which I imagine a Direct to fully go into that and really crank up the advertising is a smart play.

Not really. They have to kill Switch 1 as soon as possible. People still buying Switch 1 hardware and games while Switch 2 is out is really bad for Nintendo. That is what is happening to Sony. Half of the PSN users are login in from PS4. People have zero intention to transition to PS5 because we are still getting shit ton on of PS4 games.

I feel it would be odd for a Switch 2 console to advertise new Switch 1 games. Nothing new, anyway. If anything they'd show off how Switch 1 games look and run on Switch 2.
The console is best of both things, while i dont take it via hand held mode. I know lot people love it. Honestly this just simple not ton aside peromance you can improve apon it.
I mean it's just the smart way to go honestly. Plus for some people they'll have to save up for a bit before they transition to the switch 2 or just won't be interested in the initial lineup of software, it's important to keep the switch 1 thriving too for at least a couple years. I think it makes a ton of sense to treat the switch one like you would the 3DS in 2017 through 2018. The only advantage here that separates it from then is that you can play all of these newly released which one games, even if they are lower effort on your shiny new console. There are so many 3DS games and Wii U games they could still port over. Yoshi’s Wooly World, Twilight Princess and Wind Waker HD, any of the Fire Emblem 3DS games, Tomodachi Life etc. Nintendo could easily space these little remasters out so we have some to carry us through and fill in gaps in February, May, and June depending on when the Switch 2 releases.
On top of that, we know that Switch games can be played on Switch 2, so even that stigma post Switch 3DS games had ("Why couldn't this be on the Switch") should not be there this time, at least in theory. Which is not to say people won't complain either way, but...
I mean, with WiiU specifically? Yeah, it's just Wooly World, The HD Zelda double and Star Fox Zero aka "Why Are We Porting This Since Star Fox 64 is on Switch Online. I honestly think the Switch 2 era is probably going to see more...deeper cut Gamecube remakes (Star Fox Adventures and Assault, Chibi Robo and Eternal Darkness, among others) than WiiU or even (though it'll be more frequent) 3DS transfers.
This actually makes me happy. Supporting both systems simultaneously makes sense. Doing two separate directs seems a bit much, but they also may not want to confuse people as to what runs on what.

I would assume Nintendo would want to keep the original Switch models around as a budget, entry-level system for kids or people who are looking to get into gaming. Lower the price similar to how they lowered the 2DS to $80 and included a game. I know they haven't done any sort of price cuts, but a Switch Lite for $100 and base Switch for $200 would honestly be pretty appealing to a lot of people once the Switch 2 launches. They could even do another, cheaper original Switch model akin to their SNES "Junior" after the N64 released, the Wii Mini after the Wii U, the New 2DS XL after the Switch, even the PSOne after or around the PS2.

It feels like he has a personal beef against him and keeps saying he's guessing. Even if he forgets that he's been around forever, Nate not only announced the reveal date but more importantly he nailed that the reveal would not have a focus on software. That in itself proves it's not guessing.

I figured it would be something like that. The mini - assuming there is really going to be one - could act as a transition. Tell us about the remaining games coming out this year for switch 1 but clarify which are cross generational titles. This would generate more buzz for april and we won't be stuck with just knowing mario kart is coming. Its got plenty of fans, but its just mario kart. Kinda boring if that's the only switch 2 game we know of that's coming before april. They need to show off something way more substantional in the mini for me to care. Like twilight princess/wind waker, or completely remade majora's mask or ocarina of time: cross generational.

They could give us another look at Prime 4, anything else still in development for the switch, and maybe even reveal some new ports/remasters that could be cross gen releases (crossing my fingers for a TP/WW remake bundle cross-gen release) (WW can easily hold up on switch 1, and TP could look alright but the art style lends much more to the better graphical processing power that’ll be on switch 2. I’m also hoping they reserve OoT and MM for more of a graphical overhaul for something exclusive to Switch 2 and because OoT is so much more popular it would make sense as a release to pull customers to the new system whereas TP and WW should be cross-gen for sales purposes since they aren’t as popular)
Here are the big announcements you'll see in that Direct according to leaks (spoilers): Metroid Prime 2 Remastered (and maybe even Prime 3), a Fire Emblem Remake, a Kirby Planet Robobot remaster and Hollow Knight Silksong.
Those are all huge announcements. Especially, if the remake is Genealogy of the Holy War, that would be so hype especially in the West. If Planet Robobot gets a remake, you all better go and support it. Trust me on this. Best Kirby game ever. If this is true, this console is the healthiest senior citizen ever. Like, Okinawa 120 year old level. Which is fitting for the console that brought us Ring Fit Adventure.
With the Switch 2 announced, a final Switch 1 Direct could also feature games that will have better performance on Switch 2, encouraging people to buy these Switch 1 games instead of just waiting for the new console
Considering that these Switch 1 games are likely going to be sold on the Switch 2's eshop, they could still make a profit off of them even after people make the jump.
I mean let's keep in mind that Switch 2 is gonna be backwards compatible. So they can announce/release games that can work on both versions of the switch. Then probably won't have exclusively Switch 2 only games until 2026. Assuming they release S2 by the end of this year, they're probably unlikely to let go of Switch 1 until about mid to late 2026, beginning of 2027. With S2 completely taking over as their main new console in 2027

I have a feeling we will be seeing Switch 2 exclusives far earlier than that, both for performance reasons and to drive higher attach rates to the console. They need to keep their momentum and ensure people adopt the next console. I expect their biggest games (3D Mario, 3D Zelda, New Mario Kart, etc.) to be S2 exclusives. Sorry. Gotta pay the Nintendo tax. But I expect many Switch 1 compatible games to also be available for many years. Some 2025 games and smaller budget games will be compatible on both, because that just means more sales. They won't be abandoning the Switch 1 any time soon, like they did almost immediately with the Wii U or even 2 or so years in with the 3DS.

So let's say they introduce S2 games, they won't necessarily be exclusive since they're likely to be able to run with S1 too. For example, the next Mario Kart will likely be able to run on S1 but it's likely to be optimized for S2. That's my logic. I'm not saying there won't be any S2 games at all. I'm saying there's a good chance the ones that get announced this year will likely be compatible with both consoles. Then say around January 2026 we'll start to see the exclusive games roll out. This is just my guess is all. Also keep in mind the late S1 game releases will likely be games you can play with S2, so there's still an incentive to get the new console. You don't need an exclusive S2 game. Most ppl would still buy S1 games if they know they could play it on S2 Like I said, I could be wrong tho. Just how I'm thinking about it

like other comments are saying, it makes sense just based on the idea that theyll continue to release games for both consoles for a while before full phasing the switch 1 out, but also, it would just be kinda weird for them to not have one final direct for the switch - like one that's explicitly marketed as the final direct for it.
Nintendo has done 2 Directs within like a month before. In a Direct they have announced the next Direct say tune in for a Smash Bros Direct next month, or an Animal Crossing one or a Zelda one next week! So having two Directs in two months is nothing new. Rare yes, but these are for two different systems...so I don't see the problem.

Let’s say Switch 2 is out in August/September at the latest, June at the earliest. There are still several months without any major releases scheduled. There’s at least some additional remasters coming to bridge the gap.

If there IS a Nintendo Direct in February just for Switch 1 games, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw some of the last Wii U ports which haven't made the jump to Switch yet: Wooly World, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and Rainbow Curse comes first to my mind there. They'd still be exciting announcements, but if they were put side by side with really big announcements like a new 3D Mario and Mario Kart in the Switch 2 direct... they probably wouldn't get spotlighted too much.
I think they're saving the Zelda ports for 2026 so Switch 2 had Zelda content, if not that we're gonna be without Zelda for a looong time which is probably not ideal for a new console launch
This is a long shot, but I want Mario and Sonic at the Winter Olympics Games 2014 ported to the Switch. Always wanted to play a Winter Games game on the Switch and I don't want to get a Wii U to play one singular game.

I have a hunch that games revealed in a recent direct could indicate that they'll be switch 2 titles. The fact that the console was announced means they can include the logo for the console after a game trailer. I imagine this is a normal Nintendo direct where they reveal games coming to any or all Nintendo systems (like they had before the 3ds was discontinued.) We won't get big console info until April but if they (even just paying 3rd parties) wanna announce Switch 2 games in a direct coming up soon, now they can since the news is out. We're gonna see a little bit of both if they are doing a direct soon. Also there's so many silly soundbites in this video i wanna do a lil animation or something.
They want to send the Switch out with a bang? Give us port of Prime 2 & 3 and finally WW and Twilight Princess. Wanna give us WW and TP as early Switch 2 titles? Yeah, that's fine. Time is running out of Prime 2 & 3, though.
April falls in between their usual start of year and summer directs. It's possible the April direct is purely on the Switch 2, while the potential upcoming February direct is purely for Switch 1. A Pokemon presents is also possible in lieu of a Feb direct. The usual summer direct, depending on when they exactly they launch the Switch 2, can have a mix of both Switch 1 and 2 games in it. The 3DS still had trailers alongside the Switch upwards a year or two into the life cycle of the Switch, so it's not impossible for this arrangement to repeat. Cross gen is a time for oddities like this to happen.
Worst case scenario, Switch 2 releases in December. Then we need something to play this year. I'm guessing we get some less exciting games, like spinoffs and remakes. Or perhaps DLC. I feel like there's so many games which could use some DLC.

Every Switch game is also a Switch 2 game. Unlike the 3DS situation, there will probably be Switch support for at least 2 or 3 more years, since Indies and AA developers might just make their smaller games as Switch games with some minor improvements when playing on Switch 2. This is very similar to the PS4/PS5 situation, where there are, even now, games releasing for PS4.
PH Brazil had his livestream video for the Switch 2 reveal set 2 days before the announcement and with the correct hour. That's how I was able to watch it at the precise moment it went live. Nate was not guessing.
Nintendo released massive games for the GBA even after the DS came out, then released massive games for the 3DS even after the Switch came out. There will still be Switch 1 games and news in 2025 (and even 2026). Without even dealing with actual 1st Party Switch software, we could still see NSO updates, the introduction of Nintendo Selects, and all kinds of 3rd party projects. I’m strongly expecting a February Direct because at that point we’d only have 1 more “dated” project: XCX in March.
Considering the Alarmo reveal leak, they might be taking a guess of what is actually happening on that date. Maybe it'll just be an indi- or partner-direct.

It will feel a bit weird, Arlo. However! I’d like to point out that Nintendo will want to acknowledge that all other Directs moving forward will focus on solely the Switch2. Even if that acknowledgment is a simple 2 sentences at the end of a Direct, they’ll still need to “send off” the Switch1 into the sunset. So, a stand alone Switch1 Direct 60 days prior to the new system market ramp and fiscal year drive would make perfect sense to me. It’s less about having enough content and more about wanting to establish a definitive transition.
The february direct will obviously be all about Fantasy Life i, as a comfort to those of us who have been suffering ever since the release date was set to '2023' in early 2023

If you listen to his podcast Nate is pretty level headed and studies the industry. and usually doesn't make wild predictions without some corroborating evidence from a source he has. He's not just a random guy predicting stuff he's an industry insider.
Their typical Direct announcement is usually only a day or two before it drops. So I really don't think it'll confuse anyone as it'l won't be hanging there very long.
There have been vague rumors of one last Fire Emblem game for Switch and I believe most or all of the FE games on Switch have gotten a big Nintendo Direct spot. So I would assume that would be part of the justification.
With the Mario Kart reveal in that S2 teaser, they absolutely have been stockpiling all of their new big titles for literal years in the background. All these remakes and remasters and mini titles have been the appetizer.

Switch launced with both BotW and Mario Oddessy as brand new first party titles in the first year. If Nintendo is smart they need to have an equally strong two games at minimum in the first year. Ideally prior to the first holiday season but that depends on when the console actually becomes available

I mean, there's plenty of POSSIBLE announcements, after all, ANY game that launches on Switch 1, also releases on Switch 2. The library can only grow, and there's plenty that can still happen on Switch 1 at this point. Don't get your hopes up, but I'd be surprised if they did NOTHING for Switch 1 going forward.
A Metroid Prime 4 Direct ahead of the Switch 2 one makes sense to me, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they use it announce that it’s enhanced on Switch 2 or will dual release on both systems.
Looking at other comments, I think this does make a lot of sense. Literally every person ever (roughly) has a switch of some sort. I could see how Nintendo might want to do this transition in a way that doesn’t alienate all of the current switch owners, which again, is a very large amount of people. There might also be a lot of people, especially younger folks, who may not care about immediately jumping to new hardware. I could see why they may want to support both platforms, at least initially
The issue is they can have plenty of games that work on the current switch and also the switch 2 but where it gets tricky is when you have those games that simply can't work on the older switch and will be switch 2 exclusive. As much as I'm sure we're still going to see quite a few switch games going forward it's definitely going to slow down considerably with the majority going to the new system or at least being cross-compatible with both but working best on the newer better system. Things are already struggling quite a bit on the old console so we'll have to see just how well this goes and how much people are willing to put up with and how bad things can be and still be tolerated.

I think it makes a ton of sense to treat the switch one like you would the 3DS in 2017 through 2018.
The only advantage here that separates it from then is that you can play all of these newly released which one games, even if they are lower effort on your shiny new console.
There are so many 3DS games and Wii U games they could still port over.
Yoshi’s Wooly World, Twilight Princess and Wind Waker HD, any of the Fire Emblem 3DS games, Tomodachi Life etc.
Nintendo could easily space these little remasters out so we have some to carry us through and fill in gaps in February, May, and June depending on when the Switch 2 releases.
On top of that, we know that Switch games can be played on Switch 2, so even that stigma post Switch 3DS games had ("Why couldn't this be on the Switch") should not be there this time, at least in theory.
Which is not to say people won't complain either way, but...

* Some sort of Mario spinoff (maybe Mario Baseball to come out around May and tide us over until Switch 2 drops in June/July)
* Some of Nintendo's plans for Mario's 40th Anniversary. Maybe a 3D All-Stars rerelease with Galaxy 2, or Super Mario Bros. 40.

I would assume Nintendo would want to keep the original Switch models around as a budget, entry-level system for kids or people who are looking to get into gaming. Lower the price similar to how they lowered the 2DS to $80 and included a game.
I know they haven't done any sort of price cuts, but a Switch Lite for $100 and base Switch for $200 would honestly be pretty appealing to a lot of people once the Switch 2 launches.
They could even do another, cheaper original Switch model akin to their SNES "Junior" after the N64 released, the Wii Mini after the Wii U, the New 2DS XL after the Switch, even the PSOne after or around the PS2.

It feels like he has a personal beef against him and keeps saying he's guessing. Even if he forgets that he's been around forever, Nate not only announced the reveal date but more importantly he nailed that the reveal would not have a focus on software. That in itself proves it's not guessing.

I figured it would be something like that. The mini - assuming there is really going to be one - could act as a transition. Tell us about the remaining games coming out this year for switch 1 but clarify which are cross generational titles. This would generate more buzz for april and we won't be stuck with just knowing mario kart is coming. Its got plenty of fans, but its just mario kart. Kinda boring if that's the only switch 2 game we know of that's coming before april. They need to show off something way more substantional in the mini for me to care.

(WW can easily hold up on switch 1, and TP could look alright but the art style lends much more to the better graphical processing power that’ll be on switch 2. I’m also hoping they reserve OoT and MM for more of a graphical overhaul for something exclusive to Switch 2 and because OoT is so much more popular it would make sense as a release to pull customers to the new system whereas TP and WW should be cross-gen for sales purposes since they aren’t as popular)

Considering that these Switch 1 games are likely going to be sold on the Switch 2's eshop, they could still make a profit off of them even after people make the jump.
I mean let's keep in mind that Switch 2 is gonna be backwards compatible. So they can announce/release games that can work on both versions of the switch. Then probably won't have exclusively Switch 2 only games until 2026. Assuming they release S2 by the end of this year, they're probably unlikely to let go of Switch 1 until about mid to late 2026, beginning of 2027. With S2 completely taking over as their main new console in 2027

I have a feeling we will be seeing Switch 2 exclusives far earlier than that, both for performance reasons and to drive higher attach rates to the console. They need to keep their momentum and ensure people adopt the next console.

But I expect many Switch 1 compatible games to also be available for many years. Some 2025 games and smaller budget games will be compatible on both, because that just means more sales.

So let's say they introduce S2 games, they won't necessarily be exclusive since they're likely to be able to run with S1 too. I'm saying there's a good chance the ones that get announced this year will likely be compatible with both consoles. Then say around January 2026 we'll start to see the exclusive games roll out.
This is just my guess is all.
Also keep in mind the late S1 game releases will likely be games you can play with S2, so there's still an incentive to get the new console. You don't need an exclusive S2 game. Most ppl would still buy S1 games if they know they could play it on S2

Nintendo has done 2 Directs within like a month before. In a Direct they have announced the next Direct say tune in for a Smash Bros Direct next month, or an Animal Crossing one or a Zelda one next week! So having two Directs in two months is nothing new. Rare yes, but these are for two different systems...so I don't see the problem.

If there IS a Nintendo Direct in February just for Switch 1 games, I wouldn't be surprised if we saw some of the last Wii U ports which haven't made the jump to Switch yet: Wooly World, Wind Waker, Twilight Princess and Rainbow Curse comes first to my mind there. They'd still be exciting announcements, but if they were put side by side with really big announcements like a new 3D Mario and Mario Kart in the Switch 2 direct... they probably wouldn't get spotlighted too much.
I think they're saving the Zelda ports for 2026 so Switch 2 had Zelda content, if not that we're gonna be without Zelda for a looong time which is probably not ideal for a new console launch

I have a hunch that games revealed in a recent direct could indicate that they'll be switch 2 titles. The fact that the console was announced means they can include the logo for the console after a game trailer. I imagine this is a normal Nintendo direct where they reveal games coming to any or all Nintendo systems (like they had before the 3ds was discontinued.) We won't get big console info until April but if they (even just paying 3rd parties) wanna announce Switch 2 games in a direct coming up soon, now they can since the news is out. April falls in between their usual start of year and summer directs. It's possible the April direct is purely on the Switch 2, while the potential upcoming February direct is purely for Switch 1. A Pokemon presents is also possible in lieu of a Feb direct.
The usual summer direct, depending on when they exactly they launch the Switch 2, can have a mix of both Switch 1 and 2 games in it. The 3DS still had trailers alongside the Switch upwards a year or two into the life cycle of the Switch, so it's not impossible for this arrangement to repeat. Cross gen is a time for oddities like this to happen.
Worst case scenario, Switch 2 releases in December. Then we need something to play this year. I'm guessing we get some less exciting games, like spinoffs and remakes.
Or perhaps DLC. I feel like there's so many games which could use some DLC.

Every Switch game is also a Switch 2 game. Unlike the 3DS situation, there will probably be Switch support for at least 2 or 3 more years, since Indies and AA developers might just make their smaller games as Switch games with some minor improvements when playing on Switch 2. This is very similar to the PS4/PS5 situation, where there are, even now, games releasing for PS4.
And when the Switch 1 price drops they will make even more money selling those games.

Nintendo released massive games for the GBA even after the DS came out, then released massive games for the 3DS even after the Switch came out. There will still be Switch 1 games and news in 2025 (and even 2026). Without even dealing with actual 1st Party Switch software, we could still see NSO updates, the introduction of Nintendo Selects, and all kinds of 3rd party projects. I’m strongly expecting a February Direct because at that point we’d only have 1 more “dated” project: XCX in March.

It will feel a bit weird, Arlo. However! I’d like to point out that Nintendo will want to acknowledge that all other Directs moving forward will focus on solely the Switch2. Even if that acknowledgment is a simple 2 sentences at the end of a Direct, they’ll still need to “send off” the Switch1 into the sunset. So, a stand alone Switch1 Direct 60 days prior to the new system market ramp and fiscal year drive would make perfect sense to me.
It’s less about having enough content and more about wanting to establish a definitive transition.

My theory is this will be the "final switch direct" as in switch 1
After this one we'll be focusing on switch 2 and if something is available on 1 they'll mention it but it wont be the main drive
So even though its a little weird i think they wanna get one last switch 1 direct out before everything changes internally
Probably will have a thanks and some "heres to many more years" stuff
And could end with a switch 2 hint
They could also use this as announcements expanding NSO. People would love for them to still be supported on Switch 1 even if something might only be for switch 2.
If you listen to his podcast Nate is pretty level headed and studies the industry. and usually doesn't make wild predictions without some corroborating evidence from a source he has. He's not just a random guy predicting stuff he's an industry insider.

Their typical Direct announcement is usually only a day or two before it drops. So I really don't think it'll confuse anyone as it'l won't be hanging there very long.
There have been vague rumors of one last Fire Emblem game for Switch and I believe most or all of the FE games on Switch have gotten a big Nintendo Direct spot. So I would assume that would be part of the justification.
With the Mario Kart reveal in that S2 teaser, they absolutely have been stockpiling all of their new big titles for literal years in the background. All these remakes and remasters and mini titles have been the appetizer.
I wonder if they’d have a “one last thing” game for Switch 2. They’ll say that the direct only features Switch 1 games probably but they’ve lied before. It would be cool but I’m not expecting it!
Switch launced with both BotW and Mario Oddessy as brand new first party titles in the first year. If Nintendo is smart they need to have an equally strong two games at minimum in the first year. Ideally prior to the first holiday season but that depends on when the console actually becomes available

I think they could do a “mini” and talk about Switch 1 games coming this year (maybe a little for next year) so when we have the April direct it’s focused on just Switch 2. Then they could have a montage saying “all these games coming soon are enhanced on Switch 2” or just show a scrolling list
It makes sense- giving the switch one last direct- im sure there are some games still planned PokemonZA, Xenoblade X for example to release before the Switch2
We also need to get those Prime 2+3 ports

I mean, there's plenty of POSSIBLE announcements, after all, ANY game that launches on Switch 1, also releases on Switch 2. The library can only grow, and there's plenty that can still happen on Switch 1 at this point. Don't get your hopes up, but I'd be surprised if they did NOTHING for Switch 1 going forward.

A Metroid Prime 4 Direct ahead of the Switch 2 one makes sense to me, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they use it announce that it’s enhanced on Switch 2 or will dual release on both systems.
Looking at other comments, I think this does make a lot of sense. Literally every person ever (roughly) has a switch of some sort. I could see how Nintendo might want to do this transition in a way that doesn’t alienate all of the current switch owners, which again, is a very large amount of people. There might also be a lot of people, especially younger folks, who may not care about immediately jumping to new hardware. I could see why they may want to support both platforms, at least initially
The issue is they can have plenty of games that work on the current switch and also the switch 2 but where it gets tricky is when you have those games that simply can't work on the older switch and will be switch 2 exclusive.
As much as I'm sure we're still going to see quite a few switch games going forward it's definitely going to slow down considerably with the majority going to the new system or at least being cross-compatible with both but working best on the newer better system. Things are already struggling quite a bit on the old console so we'll have to see just how well this goes and how much people are willing to put up with and how bad things can be and still be tolerated.
