It´s a pleasure to hear this Spanish piece played so gracefully. The tempo chosen is just perfect for this rhythmical dance and the melody is beautifully expressed with a charming Spanish air. The legato technique of Mr. Russell is absolutely remarkable, so the Zapateado flows easily even in the more demanding passages. Excellent interpretation. BRAVO.

+Alberto Macaya Bravo! Encore! David is a remarkable musician and classical guitarist. If one hasn't studied some of Regino Sainz de la Maza obras, such as these two pieces, then the level of musicianship and technicality required would be impossible to know. David, indeed, was the pride and joy of our teacher, José Tomás in Alicante.

+Alberto Macaya Unless you are already familiar, also look into his brother Eduardo's compositions, for example the suite Platero y yo for guitar, and Campanas del Alba.

David was raised in Spain, so he understands the musicality of Spain.

David Russell always shows great technical skills and the louder and softer passages are finely chosen.
However the more lyrical part of the song that in fact is not so demanding, is rhythmically a bit unstable
to my ears (imho). But he keeps on playing in a legato "easy" like way that is a great plus! And the liveliness
and energy is obvious in his interpretation!

+Noud Koevoets Interesting comment. I don't hear the instability of rhythm in the transition section, perhaps a bit towards the beginning. There is lyrical freedom in the transitional section which Segovia also took advantage of. All and all, I'm pleased you like David's playing of this piece. His right hand technique was largely inherited from José Tomás in Alicante, our teacher back in the early 1970's.

The lyrical part is actually suppoused to be a bit rubato and has many variations of speed

David Russell is Scottish by family, but he was raised in Spain. That is why he plays the guitar with Spanish rhythm and musicality that most British players do not have.

There is not enough rest in Russel's playing. That is caused by what Noud names: rhytmic unstability. The sound is a bit nasal, I do not know if that has to do with the recording.

Frederick Noad-an old family friend-used the term, rhythmic instability, but I doubt he would have identified it here in this performance. If so, only very slightly is 1 or 2 spots. From studying with José Tomás in Alicante, Russell's sound is unususally dynamic. Any nasal qualities come from the recording or the acoustical setting in which he plays for this video. Thank you.

I can tell you as a flamenco guitarist, who has accompanied dancers, that this is exactly how it should be played. Please check out this performance of a Zapateado by the great flamenco guitarist Sabicas:

@@amigosXcorrespondenc I have to agree - when great artists like Russell are criticised by non-entities - your language is a bit colourful, but I would say the same !
