    Listen to this advice... You're getting it free from both of us have been there done that and made a big name. Look at his body for being in his 50's. Can you even compare to that? I doubt it. So don't be disrespectful as it only makes YOU look like a fool. If you have a better body to show, then show us...

    I think the best exercises for chest is bench press for the progressive overload and decline dumbell press for the contraction and squeeze. I agree with Doug Brignole on the most of the things but he forgets the progressive overload point, basically you lift heavier with barbells and even if you lift heavy dumbells they already get so big your range of motion is again like a bench press, so bench press is still a great exercise in my opinion because of the reasons I stated above.

    I was chuckling at 6:50 when i seen the light bulb go off in Ric's head. I find myself doing this quite a bit in my quest for fitness when I learn a new concept I had never considered before. It's very exciting when thinking the new concept can make all the difference. Good stuff...

    Thank you both for your insight and putting it in a way that is easily understood. The expertise that Doug Brignole and Jerry Brainium as well as yourself Ric, bring to the table is better than any book could illustrate.
    Like both of you said, we have certain things and certain ways in which we do those things ingrained in our mind that have to be done in order to get the result we want. Truer words in the gym have not been said lol. Its akin to the absurdly successful ways that people or companies market their supplements etc. You get hooked onto thinking "I need this pre workout to get pumped or to have energy, or I need --insert product here--" to accomplish this or that when in reality almost all of it is a mental dependency or a placebo affect.
    May I train with both of you? Hahaha. Actually it would be a combination of training with me asking 100 questions lol.

    So i have a question.....not that i disagree just curious ......if you can only work the muscle one way why do you feel different lifts in different parts of the muscle ? Love your vids you and doug are great

  • @paulblanvillain4913
    @paulblanvillain4913 9 років тому

    I tend to agree with you, but what about the fact that in certain type of mouvement (like when your elbow are high with curls) you can have a better squeeze of the muscle compared to another exercice and what about with a more complex muscle where you can target the intensity of your flex in different part of the muscle ? Are you really saying that this plays more psychological tricks than it gives physical results

  • @boxerfencer
    @boxerfencer 7 років тому

    Doug: Passive insufficiency and active suficienccy allow you to work one biceps head over another. Also, you can work some part of muscles because all fibers do not run from both extremes but there are fibers that run in varying directions. Bret Contreras has basically proven this and, afaik, it's been supported by other studies since then. And sarcoplasmic isn't targeted with high reps.

    • @boxerfencer
      @boxerfencer 7 років тому

      Doug: Geez Doug, don't exaggerate about bringing down the elbow so far. That's a close grip bench. What's recommended is form 45 degrees with the elbow because the doing the suicide press causes all sorts of shoulder pain due to the acromion. Besides, the upper pecs don't run horizontally but diagonally about 45 degrees.

    • @boxerfencer

      Doug: there is something called novelty effect to changing the exercises every once in a while.

    Thats not true because different heads of the bicep effect rotation of the foream. They have different insertions. Same goes for hamstring. You cant isolate them from each other hutnu can change which is working harder. I am also a biomechanical engineer. Not to mention a corrective excersise specialist and certfied in strongman by a top pro. What he is saying just isnt completley true. Its a oversimplication of muscle functions. A simple free body diagram of these muscle would demonstrate the forces balances at these joints and their rotational effects

    • @laxraider
      @laxraider 9 років тому +4

      To be simple he overly linearized his musculoskeletal model. And does take into account of any rotation, lateral or stabilty components. Not to mention length tension relationships which he only glances over and leaves out that you bicep also attatches to the should and is also involed in ahoulder extension. Thus a excersie like curls sitting in the incline bench or curls on a preacher curl ar different excerises. Additionally no mention of sup8nation/ pronation of the forearms effect on the biceps differently. Similar things apply to the quads. Whicj is more than 1 muscle as are the biceps, with more than 1 linear function

    OK...supposedly you cant change the muscle shape. It makes sense from a scientific point. From a practical point though, anecdotal point, Ive noticed some things that suggest otherwise. I used to box, and still I take every spring off from weight lifting and practice boxing. My arms look different when I box, a little smaller, but also different. And even though my arms are almost equally strong, my left arm looks different than my right arm, and in my opinion that's from boxing also. The muscle shape appears different.

    • @talldarknindian3695
      @talldarknindian3695 7 років тому

      youre right and left bicep muscle bellies can be shaped differently... this is normal.
      you can only make a muscle bigger or smaller, thats it.

    he contradicted himself when he described a muscles's strength curve and how important it can be then he says the muscle can't tell the difference between one exercise or the other. He's also wrong that you can't change how your legs can be worked or arms can be worked. You have hands and feet that change how the muscles are stressed as they change position. It isn't a simple hinge...the body is never simple.

    doug is missing the whole concept of time under tension and only focusing on reps. I cam make one rep last 30 seconds and do 3 reps per set which would be 90 seconds or work. Or I could do ten reps , 3 seconds per rep and only do 30 seconds or work. Its not the number of reps a person does its the time under tension that is key.
