Had one for yonks now, really good mic. Yeah it's not SM7b flat but contrary to what some audio snobs are saying in the comments, that's not the point of this mic. The BP40 is designed to cut through pretty much any underlying sound source in a mix with little processing.

Something to consider about the comments concerning price compared to other mics is the build quality, This mic is very well built compared to some of those mentioned. This mic is worth the money.

The BP40 adds something raspy to your voice with the 4khz bump, harder to process if you learn how to EQ 😜 It's still a toss up between the RE20 and the SM7B, I prefer the Electrovoice if it's paired with a good preamp although the Shure is probably easier to process for sound noobs.

Just found this test now (2yrs is nothing in pandemic time...) and want to say thanks for a great mic test. I have the BP40 and love it. But I really wanted to know how it sounded compared to the RE20 and am very pleased with the result. I run it into a MixPre 6 and don't usually bother with a Cloudlifter. Only downside is managing "mouth sounds" which are very, um, present. Thanks again, great review.

It's not a bad mic by no means, but in all honesty, the audio engineer inside me kept wanting to turn the Mid-range down more. Is it just me or I'm the only one that really likes how this sounds during the pop master and broadcast settings? I've always loved the RE20, but it seemed like on all of the tests the RE20 had a very prominent 6-8 kHz area that made sibilance really annoying. The BP40 was very smooth after EQ and compression and sounded very natural.

I have a 34" ultrawide that usually stands at around 19" tall and it blasts over it easily(by 8-10in maybe?) and can hold a SM7B no problem. Hey, thanks for the incredible review. Do you feel you need a cloud lifter with BP40 or you were happy with the signal it provided without it? My only concern with EV RE20 is that they are just over a $1,000 here in Australia and $300 for a cloud lifter totalling over $1,300 making it one very expensive setup while BP40 is $360 right now. Do you think RE20 is worth 3 times more than the BP40 or i should be happy with BP40? I am currently using RODE NT which is good but i don't like the shape for video calls and i used RODE Podmic before and i found that to be too bassy so i do want a new dynamic mic but hoping i will only get one that will last me a long time?

I analyzed your compressed waves of the bp40. For some reason it goes up 10 DB around 4K and dips a little between 200 and 700. The Boost around 5K is a natural setting on the re ev re27 but it's not nearly as prevalent. I wonder why they did that? I guess they're assuming people will be using this on top of Music beds and video games so they wanted a huge presence? I hope this fad goes away

The idea that condenser microphones "reject" more sound than dynamic microphones is a misconception. Sound intensity simply follows the inverse square law, so, the farther away from a sound you are, the quieter it will be. What type of technology is actually picking up the sound doesn't actually directly cause one technology to reject more background noise than another, at a given microphone position or gain level. The only reason a condenser microphone is called a condenser is because that is a rather archaic name for what we know as "capacitors". Capacitors are electrical devices that store charge between 2 conductors separated by a dielectric. By changing the space between the conductors, you change their electric potential. That change in electric potential (voltage) is a signal that can be read by some other device. As you mentioned, in order for these devices to work, they need some power supply to produce an electric potential between the conductors.
Dynamic microphones, on the other hand, work the same exact way as electric motors, solenoids, and other devices do. You have a magnet suspended inside of a coil of wire. when sound hits that magnet, it moves, inducing a change in potential in the wire. That change in potential is, again, the signal that other audio devices can read.
What causes a dynamic microphone to sound like it "rejects" more background noise is actually a result of the limitation of the technology. The thing inside a dynamic microphone that "captures" the sound is a heavy magnet (when compared to the very thin films of conductors used in condensers). Because the magnet is so heavy, it is more difficult to move it quickly. Dynamic microphones tend to have a narrower, less flat, frequency response, especially in the high end. Because the human voice falls in the midrange of the audio spectrum, a dynamic microphone that has a flat frequency response in the mid/upper bass and through the midrange, while having a rolloff in the higher frequencies, can capture human vocal sounds fairly transparently while rejecting sibilance and background noises in the upper frequencies (like clicks, pops, hissing and scratching in the background, etc).
The reason that condenser microphones seem to pick up more background noise is because they tend to have a flatter frequency response that extends into the higher frequencies. I have an audio technica AT2020 as my desk mic, and the response is fairly flat, with only a slight rolloff below about 100 hz, and a very slight bump at around 10 kHz. 10 kHz happens to be where a lot of hissy noises and sibilance lies. The hisses from speaking S sounds, ambience, etc, all lies right at that 10 kHz peak, meaning that the microphone.
But, if you were to take a condenser microphone and a dynamic microphone that both had the exact same frequency response and pickup pattern, neither microphone would "reject" any more noise than the other, if both were to record a speaker in a room from the same position. the idea that condenser microphones inherently reject room sound better than other microphones is just a misunderstanding how the technology between microphones impacts their performance.
EDIT: I grabbed some more information from the spec sheets of each microphone.
Here is the audio technica AT 2020
    www.audio-technica.com/cms/wired_mics/a0933a662b5ed0e2/index.html
If you click on the specifications tab, scroll down a bit, and click on the picture of the frequency response curve, you'll get an expanded view.
You can see that the frequency response curve is fairly flat, and it extends all the way from 20 hz to 20 kHz, the very limits of human audition, with a slight attenuation of frequencies below 200 Hz and a slight accentuation of frequencies around the 10 kHz area.
    Here is the Electro-Voice RE20
    www.electrovoice.com/binary/RE20_Engineering_Data_Sheet.PDF
on the second page you can see a fairly flat frequency response all the way through the audio range, again with a slight emphasis in the 8 kHz range, and with a rolloff in the bass beginning around 70 Hz.
Finally, here is the Audio Technica BP 40
    www.audio-technica.com/cms/wired_mics/d38854ca3f6290c0/index.html
Again, if you click on the specifications tab and bring up the expanded view of the frequency response graph, you'll see everything you need to know about this microphone.
This microphone has a rolloff in bass frequencies around 100 Hz. this does well to reject rumble from wind, or microphone handling noise, or someone accidentally bumping the microphone or stand in some way.
Additionally, the microphone has a steep roloff beginning at about 15 kHz. this does well to reject a lot of room ambience that lies in this range. There is also no emphasis (or peak) at the 10 kHz mark, meaning this microphone does not emphasize any sibilance or sizzles or other sounds made by either the S and T sounds in human speaking, nor does it accidentally emphasize any room ambience in this frequency band.
Finally, you *do* see a peak in the midrange frequencies from around 2 kHz to about 6 kHz, with a strong peak centered at about 3.5 to 4 kHz. Why? because that is where the strongest frequencies for the human voice lies. While the fundamental frequency of most males is around the 150 Hz, and most females are around an octave about that between 250 Hz and 300 Hz, most of the "bite" of the human voice lies in the area known in musical pedagogy as the "singers formant". Broadcast speakers, people who need to sing for long periods of time, and basically anybody that relies on their voice eventually train their voice to make use of the spectrum in the 2-4 kHz range.
Basically, the Audio Technica BP40 rejects low frequency rumble, rejects high frequency sibilance and ambience, and emphasizes the frequency band that carries the most vocal information.

Hey bud. I was so wanting for this microphone to sound great. One of my tests is to listen to it through a cell phone speaker because that's where most people watch / listen to creators. The top end sounded so boosted it was distorted. I noticed the 5K sharp drop off on the chart but right after that it is way too over boosted to the point where it is just distorting the top .
I'm so bummed. I was literally going to buy this tomorrow.
The rore pot mic has a bad low end, but at least the top and boost is nice and clean. When my book it's not that hard to beat that microphone but this one isn't even doing it :( thoughts? Have you listened to it on your cell phone?

If you look at the sound samples you will see that re20 is much more symblant. So take the graphs with a pinch of salt.
Bp40 is more broadcast - smooth. Don’t confuse that with clipping. Clipping is more like “tic”, smooth is like ‘ah’ 🌹

i love this mic as well, and I wanna use it more, but it seems to have a weird connection for me where it plugs in, it can move while plugged in and if I move the mic while talking to friends or something my mics audio becomes very distorted and no one can hear me, its hard cause they don't tell me right away when it happens, I have to move the cord back to fix it, it happens so often its annoying. I wonder if I got send a faulty mic, I've had it for awhile and kind of stopped using it for this reason.

old video, but I've had this mic for a while and bought it because of the 'off axis rejection' thing.. but for some reason my mic pics up every sound my wife makes sitting about 10 feet away from me. I even have the rear side of the mic pointing directly at her. I'm plugged into a GoXLR mini and played around with the noise gate even, but nothing seems to work lol. I'm at a loss..

The Audiotechnica BP-40 is a microphone that is just lack luster. And yes the microphone costs $350 however it's really a $450 cause you really want that shock mount. And for your voice this maybe your microphone. My opinion though is that the re20 is the better mic, however if you want that broadcast sound with little excess processing the bp-40 is perfect.

    • @Pabula
      @Pabula 5 років тому

I disagree, mics is a more personal thing at this level, for you and probably for most, the re20 might be better, but your voice is probably more suited for it. I personally welcome having more options, to me the BP40 is a very nice sounding to my voice, even better than re20, this doesn't make it better, just for my voice and in my personal subjective opinion.

The problem with this mic is that it's price so very close to the SM7B that I just went with that over this at mic. If it were priced at 300 I would have gone for it but it's price was to close to the SM7B that I just couldn't justify saving 50 and skipping the quality of the SM7B

I still think, the RØDE Procaster is the King of bang for buck. Very hard to beat by an amount, which mirrors the price differences of all these options. That being said: If I was to get myself a mic in this price region, it would be the Shure SM7B, which seems to match my EQ likings out of the box.

In a very silent environment, how close should you be to a mic like this one? Could you realistically have it out of (video) frame and still have good or even as good audio? (I know, maybe a noob question - sorry if it is.)

    • @bigtb1717
      @bigtb1717 5 років тому

It's not just about how silent the environment is, it is also how well treated the environment is. If there are lots of hard surfaces that sound can reflect off of, you will get generally poor audio if your microphone isn't very close to your mouth.
Nothing wrong with having a microphone in frame. If you really cannot deal with having a microphone close to you, a treated space and a microphone with good off-axis rejection and directional pickup may be better. A dynamic mic would work, but you will have to have the gain turned up even higher to get good levels if the mic isn't near you. If you don't have a powerful pre-amp you would likely need something like a Cloudlifter to get good levels with a dynamic mic that wasn't close to you. Even then, it isn't ideal.
