This has got to be the best podcast leaning dynamic microphone showdown I’ve seen. I also really appreciate that you included a female voice on the microphones, which I feel is really lacking in all of the other reviews. Cheers!
Thank you for a clean comparison of these mics. Going from the relaxing smoothness of the MV7X to the crisp PodMic was a jolt to my ears. I do own a PodMic and love it for my voice but my preamp, a little EQ and a touch of compression sweeten it a bit. I'm meh about the PD-70. I wouldn't buy it. Same for the SM7B. Straight up it's too boomy but it's got the look for video.
I loved this video! My take, SM7B is an easy/safe bet, with low listener fatigue, but lacks some clarity. Pod Mic, ok for some, and looks great, but over rated (I own one). MV7x, sounds good, and I prefer it over the SM7B, the extra clarity makes would make it easier to cut through a music bed. PD-70 most underrated budget broadcast style dynamic, sounds great, and super easy to EQ as it is very neutral (also own this one). Thanks sharing this one, I have been thinking about trying the MV7x
Maybe I'm just a lemming, but I love the SM7B. It just sounds... like butter. But I always like pitting it against other mics because the nuances of their sound stand out all the more clearly. Thanks for the comment and would love to see your video comparing the Podmic, PD-70, and the MV7X...?
@@PhillipRPeck The SM7B is clearly made for easy listing, like podcast and radio, it would for sure be my pick for that. I have been trying to get some of the best budget broadcast dynamics sent out for review. I have struggled to get companies to send them out, but do have a few here, so I hope to make that a series of videos in the near future. My main "in shot mic" is now the PD-70.
I agree about the lack of SM7B clarity. I could spend that money much more wisely. I also agree about the MV7X which I might pick up if the right deal or an open box came along. It's a pro looking solid choice at a nice price point.
At 0:46 I can clearly hear a frequency static that the Podmic picks up, how often do you hear this? I bought 2 Podmic few weeks ago and it drove me mad trying to figure out what was bad, the evo 4, the cable or the mic itself, then I tried it with a laptop in another room and left my phone and PC in another, and it kinda worked. But in your other videos I couldn't hear this static. What's your experience with it? Would a cloudlifter help by not pulling the gain to the max? I bought them for paid podcast work, and it really annoys me, but I liked the price and the sound of them. Now that I typed it, i heard the PD-70 do it at 1:20 too.
Hmm, that's interesting. I think I just chalked that up to a plosive, but after listening back, it does seem that the mic is picking up some other type of pop. Not sure what that is. Does it happen often? If it's not too frequent, it might be worth it to go into a audio plugin that allows you to remove little clicks and pops like that. Adobe Audition can do it
Same experience for me. Got podmic. Static always up. Tried everything (cables, changed audio interface, with preamp, without preamp, with low gains, different usb ports for audio interface, nothing. Something moving the micropone seemed to fix the thing, but I want a mic that works 100% all the time, not something tht I have to deal with everytime hoping it's working. Got a mv7x and returned the podmic. No problems and it sounds so much better with a warm sound. Got it with sm7b pop filter and switched the original. No plosives or static. Love Shure
Just found your channel while checking related videos, and love this comparison, Phillip! I currently run an Electro-Voice RE320 and am looking for a back-up mic, for either traveling to events or getting back to one-to-one interviews. What I like about the RE320 is its neutrality, which makes me sway towards the PD-70, but the MX7X sounds really good. Hmmm...
@@PhillipRPeck Yeah, looking at some more videos on that and it does seem nice and warm. Given I have the neutral with the EV, may be nice to have a mic that has that bit of a deeper end. True story - he actually DM'd me on Twitter a few years back, as I'd accidentally get sent tweets from his fans who didn't look at my avatar, just checked out the name. Some of them were a bit "fruity", shall we say, but always fun, never over the top. 😜 Anyhoo, he DM'd me to apologize and just to let him know if anyone went overboard and he'd deal with it. Super nice thing to do, and just out of the blue, he just wanted to reach out. Much respect to him for that.
@@PhillipRPeck Currently I have two podcasts, with a co-hosted one currently on hiatus. But thinking of doing some live-streams as bonus content, so checking for a different mic to have as alternative source too. :)
Someone says that the PD-70 is rather neutral and therefore easier to work with... do you think it is the best choice as my first professional microphone? Excuse my English, I am Italian :)
The PD-70 is a great choice. I'd probably lean toward the MV7X if you're trying to keep the cost down under $200 USD, because I find the PD-70 to be a bit to thin for my taste
I understand this wasn't the intention of your video but I was curious about the gator frameworks boom arm that you're using with your sm7b. I currently own the sm7b and was looking into this exact arm but I'm a bit worried about the built in cable, has this given you any trouble?
Is it worth to buy SM7B over MV7X if I dont want to use extra windscreen ? I think MV7X is the one which is clearly worst at plosives and I'm doing screaming vocals.
Hey, thanks for your recent videos about microphones, they're great to get a good impression and accurate comparisons on a good selection of the available options. Considering I live in an untreated loft and will have to deal with keyboard sounds, should I base my choice around dynamic mics or would any type work with a software noise gate ?
For what it's worth, I've been checking the MV7 usb vs at2020/podmic + scarlett (around 180€ for each option), or the more budget options of an at2020 usb+ (130) or an elgato wave (95).
I haven't heard great things about the AT2020 USB although I haven't tried it myself. The MV7 is great, the Shure Plus Motiv app really helps dial in the sound you want. I also haven't tried the elgato, but people seem to like it and the software is a bonus, too.
@@PhillipRPeck Thanks a lot for your answer ! I'm a bit more into the XLR AT2020's sound from your AT2020 vs PodMic video with how full bodied it feels, but the USB MV7 feels like the reasonable option with the room I'm in and my use case, the USB MV7 also sounds cleaner in the highs compared to the PodMic for a comparable price since I'd need an interface. Thanks again for your videos and for your reply, and I'll try to see if I can get your affiliate link to work in my regional amazon website
Thanks Troyoo, and good luck! The $250 for the MV7 does sound high, but when you take into consideration the cost of a mic plus an audio interface, it starts to be a more reasonable
Great video dude. They all nearly sounded the same in this video. lol. I have the PD70 and just got the RØDECaster, I think imma just get a cloud lifter and call it a day.
Thank you. Definitely. Just use the mic you have, they are all great. I'd check out the Klark Teknik CM-1. It's only about $30 and works just as well as the Cloudlifter as far as I can tell. I'm in the middle of testing them out again and comparing with the Coda Stealth
@Felicity A pop filter or the Shure SM7b windscreen work well. Also, you can just position the mic so it's angled toward your mouth (about 45 degrees) instead of pointed straight at your mouth
You should just try it and see how it sounds for you. If it's not giving you enough levels or the interface is too noisy, then you can buy a Cloudlifter.

Hello. I don't have personal experience with much of that gear, except the Podmic of course. I have the Audient evo4 which I really like and I think it has nice preamps so I think the id4 would be a good choice. I also think if you want the crispiest, clearest sound, then going with a large diaphragm condenser is the best choice. So maybe the 240 Pro. The Rode NT1 is also a great option at a reasonable price
Pd70 is the best. Sold my Dynacaster and lewitt 440 pure and kept my pd70. Got some extra stuff with the money I saved✌️

The SM7b, easily
