Tonight I listened to Mozart's d minor concerto, Beethoven's b major concerto, John Coltrane's Ellington versions, and Muddy Waters Blues, these guys, all on the same degree of cultural pride and perfection.

Probably the most perfect blues performance of all time, musically and lyrically. Bob Dylan can sing thousands of words, but nothing in that comes close to Muddy's opening line in this. At the time he recorded this Muddy had moved some years earlier from Mississippi to Chicago, but anywhere in the South, such as Louisiana and Mississippi was to him 'way behind the Sun' . Muddy and his audience, who had largely moved North to Chicago, still retained a longing for the South and its voodoo and its old ways. This brief song's lyrics contain almost perfect word pictures and the accompaniment by Muddy on his guitar and Little Walter on his harmonica are also sheer perfection. The only thing that, for me, matches it in all of American popular music for its sheer concise perfection is Louis Armstrong's West End Blues from 1928, with Earl Hines on piano playing the 'other voice'. I have loved both of those pieces of music for over half a century, and maybe I am a bit biased, but nothing I have heard in that time has exceeded those two iconic pieces. They and Duke Ellington's Cottontail were the first pieces that I played at the beginning of the new century 22 years ago, to celebrate the music of the 20th Century.
