- McKinley Morganfield (April 4, 1913 - April 30, 1983), known professionally as Muddy Waters, was an American blues musician who is often cited as the "father of modern Chicago blues".
Muddy Waters grew up on Stovall Plantation near Clarksdale, Mississippi, and by age 17 was playing the guitar and the harmonica, emulating the local blues artists Son House and Robert Johnson. He was recorded in Mississippi by Alan Lomax for the Library of Congress in 1941. In 1943, he moved to Chicago to become a full-time professional musician. In 1946, he recorded his first records for Columbia Records and then for Aristocrat Records, a newly formed label run by the brothers Leonard and Phil Chess.
In the early 1950s, Muddy Waters and his band-Little Walter Jacobs on harmonica, Jimmy Rogers on guitar, Elgin Evans on drums and Otis Spann on piano-recorded several blues classics, some with the bassist and songwriter Willie Dixon. These songs included "Hoochie Coochie Man", "I Just Want to Make Love to You" and "I'm Ready". In 1958, he traveled to England, laying the foundations of the resurgence of interest in the blues there. His performance at the Newport Jazz Festival in 1960 was recorded and released as his first live album, At Newport 1960.
Muddy Waters' influence was tremendous, not just on blues and rhythm and blues but on rock and roll, hard rock, folk music, jazz, and country music. His use of amplification is often cited as the link between Delta blues and rock and roll.

I had the privilege of playing the piano on that stage many years after with Muddy's son Mud Morganfield and with Bob Margolin joining us!
I think I wanna cry. The #1 in blues so close to home (also Molde, Norway) the summer I quit school (aged 17) after 12 years, starting my academic career - that lasted 4 months. I preferred going to the cinemas and record stores instead of my math lessons, and I quit by Xmas, now 18. Started working Jan. 25, 1980, had 6,000 LPs that I sold in 2007. Also 2,000 CDs, 2,300 video tapes and 3,000 DVDs. And I have NO regrets, thank God or Jimi Hendrix I didn't become a math teacher or whatever! Been to 600+ concerts, although nothing in 22 months due to Covid 2020-2022 (no show at all in 2021 for the first time since 1977...). Also watched 400+ artists at 42 festivals 1981-2005 in Sweden, Denmark and Germany. I'm lucky to have caught B.B. King, Buddy Guy, Champion Jack Dupree and Albert Collins.

May the Lord’s blessings be upon you and your family, providing you with health, happiness, and unwavering faith in His divine plan.
If there is a voice which defines blues, it must be muddy waters!
I've first herd of muddy water in 1946 I was 8 years old
The Blues, how f'n good!
I'm a whipper-snapper (dob 1949,) but have all these legends in my collection, and adding more (thanks, UA-cam!) every day
What a wonderful world we live in.
Go hard, Carlos, it's the secret of life
THIS IS THE REAL MUSIC!!!EVERYTHING COMES FROM THE BLUES!!!!
Everything old has a special taste, and the flavor of music, cars, people, everything
2024 here ❤
I was at a blues bar in Detroit (1978 ish) called The Soup Kitchen. Muddy walked in with a few members from his band and jammed for about an hour a half. The house band didn’t mind since they jammed right along with them. I was Awesome!!!
That must have been so cool!! What a fantastic surprise, eh!!?
Wat an good on yuo❤experience
The Harmonica is so underrated! ❤
The contribution of so many instruments and players is often lost in the ecstasy of the performance.
i was at this gig - i was nearly 19 years old! - it was incredible ! - we went back the next year and saw him again ! - happy days !! - we went on the "magic bus" from london to den haag - cheap hippie punk travel...
I reckon you 61 nowadays
Gtfoh! My word that sounds like good livin'! Too much fun. I was able to see James Brown with my son when he was 12yo. Out in a field, front and center stage. It was a great experience. Danced till we fell down!
Lucky Dog 👌🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Hey man I am 57 years old but I am a rookie blues and jazz fan and I am I don't know where it has been all my life!

This is some of the coolest music you will ever hear, no wonder them kids in the 50's made rock and roll from the blue's, to good not too.
authentic masters of blues
50 years ago we had great music & shitty cameras.
Now we got great cameras.
Well.. muddy waters isy favorite blues man ever .. in fact he was the reason why I heard that this music called blues... But I have to admit pinetop got me to like Kansas city bcuz of this performance.. god bless blues and it's fans .. keep the blues alive please.. peace from Cairo Egypt ❤❤
Muddy was such a an musical inspiration to so many junkies of souls selling allies as alikes. this cat was the world to Jam with. Huge and unbelievable to future that inspired, greatest artist inspiration to tons. God bless your souls,
This band was one of the best Muddy ever had. It is only surpassed by the band he had in late 40's and early 50's, which consisted of Otis Spann, Jimmie Rogers and Little Walter.
I so love music, it's poetry and a world needs more of it, Amen❤
muddy brings joy to the blues
That's the late JR -- Luther Guitar Johnson -- on guitar. What a band!
Seen this band and MW at the comadore ballroom in 1980 in Vancouver BC history in the making
World of Jazz - thank you for this stunning, timeless, diamond league performance by Muddy Waters Blues Band
YEAH MUDDY YOU AND YOUR BAND ARE THE BEST REAL LEGENDS I LIKE TO LISTEN TO YOU R.I.P.
Straordinaria eccellenza 2023....
Muddy had the tightest band always
Love Muddy Waters ……. Saw Mr. Waters at the JAZZ festival Montreal many years ago …. Took me away to paradise ….. his band is super also ….. great style and music….. 👍
I feel to go back on the stage to play the mighty music of my roots the blues. To help create the new world history òrder .it cannot even take place without my brother speaking about the blues.
Luther Johnson was one of the finest guitarist Muddy ever had in his band
Agreed. He just passed away.
I'd agree with that.
I've learned the guitar by listening him. his phrasing his bends evrything's perfect!!
He was great, as was Little Walter. But have you heard Charlie Musselwhite, also a white guy? I saw him here in Sweden some 20 years ago,j ust after his wife had been attacked (but survived) by a shark while on vacation in Hawaii. I asked him about it after the show, and he was surprised I knew about it. She wasn't badly hurt.
Then of course there's Kim Wilson. Not only in The Fabulous Thunderbirds for 45+ years, but also his solo albums, wow! A wellknown, Swedish mouth harp player who thought he was good felt ashamed after having caught them live once (I've seen them twice)...
Love this live performance, that I listen to everytime I want to feel good, no matter what's happening in my personal life...Muddy over the top!
The Chicago '69 is niiiiice!
I love it too. I was there.
When I was stationed in Germany in the late 80s, I remember some blues band members from the North Sea Jazz Fest played for us at the tiny jazz bar on the Mosel river. That was a real special time for the blues lovers that night.
This took place a month before I was born. When you got the blues it can feel like your problems are the only thing that matters. Finding this performance and the fact that it and countless others exist at the tip of my fingers and that I carry them all around in my pocket makes me feel so lucky that I start thinking, maybe I don't got it so bad as I thought...
I feel that and it work to relieve stress.
Jerry is one of my favourite harmonica players
Me too!!
harmonic and fantastic, the name and Jerry ???? would like to know the 2 name, thanks
Jerry Portnoy
@@gclarke180 thanks
Yeah check also Muddy at RockPalace.. Jerry's on fire there as well
Lovely to hit 40 years ago so smoothly. Great musicians
Was gibt es besseres als mit blues zu tanzen.
Muddy & I share the same birthday...we were fortunate enough to see him twice, a few years after this, at our local university.
⊙ Both the Stones & that once great, magazine, got their name from his song.
☆ Rock and Roll got some of it's DNA from the great man‼️
MUddy's bands are good by themselves, when he comes up its like icing on the cake, just over the top . . .
I can't listen this band enough 🎸🎵 Jerry Portnoy just controlls every single notes, what a legend!
Had to comment one more time. Portnoy on the harp is is insanely good. I could listen to this all day!
Love how the musicians worship him. And he gives incredible space for them to shine. Grand.
I love Muddy Water's songs.
Muddy always had the best harp players with him. Jerry Portnoy is no exception. What a torch to bear. He holds up his end of the band no problem.
Bewonder en geniet er van de jongen met zijn mondharmonica komen mij mooie herrinneringen " Boven " Onvergetelijk ❤🇳🇱👍👋🙏
amazing sound
Ok in 60’s ou 70’s portnoy was a great player but after 90’s he is just a legend. The modern player are much better.
Jerry Portnoy is the son of a Jewish rug merchant.
Yeah, agreed he smoked on that harp
This was filmed about 1 year after i was born. I am astonished by the quality of the video, sound , and talent in this gem!
Love Muddy & Jerry Portnoy! Thank you so much!🎸🎶🎶

FENOMINO MUSICALE BEAUTIFUL
The blues had a baby they named it baby rock n roll
Surprisingly good video quality.
Excelente video, con un final clásico, thanks a lot Word of Jazz! (Jorge Villa).
Blues is the best medicine and cleansing
The piano player's name is Willie "Pinetop" Perkins. I don't know where the Bob came from.
This is beautiful! He was one of a kind.
Portnoy channeling Little Walter on that 3rd instrumental. What a fabulous player.

This is something special. I was watching Paul Butterfield in 1978 from Winterland I think. Same kinda of vibe.
love his slide.
A great performance. The photography and production was quite progressive for 1979.
Well, it was pretty progressive 12 years earlier with Julie Driscoll.....😂
Muddy is the MAN !!!!
Very similar to when I saw Muddy in a Pub gig in the Nags head High Wycombe early 70's with his own band.
