In this video I answer the question "What is lyrical prose" and give an overview of poetic techniques you need to write lyrical prose. This is Part 1 of the 4-part Lyrical Prose 101 series.
    ABOUT PEEK & CRITIQUE
PEEK & CRITIQUE -- for writers of rhyming picture books, prose picture books, and children's poetry -- is a series that explores concepts taught in The Lyrical Language Lab online course, such as poetic meter, rhyme, sound devices, word choice, lyrical language, imagery, and scansion. I read and critique YOUR submitted writing samples of rhyming picture books, prose picture books, and children's poetry, explaining concepts along the way.
This is a FREE service for kidlit writers! You do not need to have taken my Lyrical Language Lab course to participate. This service is open to ALL kidlit writers!

This the best video yet on lyrical prose. While I, myself, do not write middle grade, picture books, or kid literature in any form, I find these techniques easily apply to adult literature. After having found my voice I realized my genre of choice is literary fiction but I also realized I didn't know how to do it well; I questioned how to use poetic techniques to my advantage and how to piece it all together. This video was well done from the simplification of a complex idea without watering it down to providing the bones without overexplaining (aka it's a succinct video). Thanks for this video!

Thank you so much for your comment! While my course is geared toward those who write for young people, the poetic techniques I cover certainly apply to ALL types of writing -- and most definitely to literary fiction. I'm so glad you found it helpful! :)

"Focusing on the poetry of the language means- 'The craft of mining the language of all the riches it already contains.'" --I like the image of mining the language for its riches. Thank you for this great beginning to your prose series. Looking forward to the next one.

Thank you for offering up this series. I am having a sound problem with the video. I'm only getting sound out of my left side. There's nothing wrong with the headphones though. I just wanted to let you know.

Thank you. I am aware of the issue and will need to figure out how to fix that for future videos. :)

I name a bunch of authors in each of these four videos, so that would be a good place to start. And just look for "literary fiction." One of my favorite writers for young people is Kate DiCamillo -- she has a beautiful way with words.
