My neighbor came by asking if I could help him with his lawnmover. Looked on UA-cam and found your video. Now the machine iz fixed. Thank you very much for doing a difference 🤗
This videotutorial is six years old and i have viewed it and found it was quite helpful to me as i struggled to repair&adjustmen my mower for this cuttiing season, Thanks P.B.! Your still close ups were just what i needed to make it all happen.YOU STILL DA' MAN ! Wayne B. in the D
I just want to add an update that replacing my worn-out flimsy governor spring and broken idle spring was all that it took to fix my surging engine. I literally could not have done it without the kindness of your taking the time to help everyone with your videos, especially this one. Thanks, again.
Thanks Paisteboy! Got a used mower and someone had mutilated the governor springs and tabs. I can get it back together correctly thanks to your video. Really like the close ups! In case someone needs these numbers, the large spring is B&S #691297 and the small spring is B&S #691859.
Thank you so much Sir. My springs broke, I got new ones and had no idea where they go. Called B and S and she had no idea. So, you saved the day for me.
Many thanks, great little video. My ex said I could have the lawn mower because 'someone' had looked at it and it was finished. Found some bolts to reconnect the carb, washed the sponge filter in petrol, set up (with a bit of bending of wires) the spring linkages as per your video and it started. A quick adjustment to the drive cable and I was being pulled along by my trusty stead of 15 years (lol).
The close ups was wat I needed. Excellent job. You just made everything easier for me. You explained everything so we'll and very detailed. Bless you.. 👌🏾🌹
Thanks. The idle on my my mower is a lot higher than it should be. These mowers do idle a little low normally. I raised my idle so it wouldn't bog in higher grass. It's really not good for the motor, but I don't use it much since I have a rider and 2 other push mowers. If I remeber correctly I just bent the tab back that's connected to the shorter spring.
Thank you so much for the close- ups ,i was having trouble remembering the way the linkage was to go .I have been showing my 15 yr old son how to look after a mower as my dad showed me . Thank you
Brilliant many thanks have my 3.5 classic hunting and have changed the gasket cleaned the carb and it's still going looking at this I don't have enough tension on the springs. Thanks again
Many thanks, needed this. I realized after seeing it that i put the air link vane in backwards. also had to unclog the pin hole on the underside of the carburetor, but got mine running.
Cool man. I made this video because I couldn't find one on youtube at the time, so I figured it out myself and made the two videos. I'm glad it helped.
Thank you, SIR - GREAT Video - GREAT photos. i had the same issue with my Briggs/Strat and watching your vid solved my problem - again thank you, keep up the GREAT Vids.
Absolutely first class description great photos helped me - my linkage was complete bent of of shape (hitting concrete fence rail ) was not quite sure how to bend back BUT now spot on THANKS.
Thanks, Better video I found. Exactly what I needed but my engine model is B&S 12h802 1966 E1, a bad mecanic take off and lost the springs and I got crazy looking for right place.
Thank you very much for this - extremely helpful and solved the problem that's been bugging me all weekend! You really saved me a lot of money and headache - cannot thank you enough!
Thanks for the upload the detailed pictures are exactly what i was looking for. i was given a lawnmower that wouldn't start and all of these springs were just hanging off..
Hey, great video and great photos, i have ordered these and was not exactly sure what way they linked together, but thanks to you problem solved, thanks again man
This is almost exactly what I'm looking for. One question though. There's a bit of linkage off the the side that has a thicker cable, which routes around the air intake. Where does the other end of that go? I don't have that cable on my mower and wonder if that's what is causing it to not start...Thanks
yeah I bought my quatro from a pawn shop and it worked well until just last week. for some reason I can't get full throttle anymore and that loose spring might be the problem.... pretty mickey mouse looking setup by briggs and stratton. couldn't they come up with something less flimsy? Good video
Thank you so much for this helpful video. i could setup the springs as they should be and the motor works fine again after being devastated by a so-called 'professional repair service'. THX again / Olaf
Hey, I watched your vid, it's very good. I thought I'd share a diagnostic step that you did not mention which ended up being my problem. On my motor the speed would never stay steady. I replaced the governor springs, the carb diaphragm & gasket, and gave it a complete cleaning. It got better but still hunted speed. Then one day I realized what I hadn't checked was the throttle shaft. Sure enough when I wiggled the shaft there was play and looseness in it. This allows too much air.
Good video, but can you show the choke, med(idle), fast and off positions of the linkage? When I move my linkage nothing moves and the carb stays at idle
I enjoyed this step by step video and th eprevious one you posted... I have a similar quattro mower. My mowers problem is with the speed always being on high or fast. I replaced the throttle cable, long/short springs, and link vane (just for kicks). Mower speed can manually be lowered, but once I let go, it goes back to fast speed. I even bent the metal area where the springs attach onto. Still on high. i see the throttle cable move, but the idler does not. Any advice? PLEASE!!! Thank You
The link air vane is where the two springs come together at the loop and it connects just in front and behind those points. See my video response for part 1. It may help.
The little spring tightens up as the engine is running to help control the RPM's. It can be adjusted by bending the tab that it's connected to inward or outward. You do need the small spring or the governor will not function. Thanks for watching.
My lawnmower continually revs up and down about every 2 seconds. One of the small springs fell off. Do you think the springs are the problem, or could it be something else? I sprayed carb cleaner but it didn't help.
I have a B&S engine on a log splitter. When I start it I have to hold the choke lever in the choke position or it just will not stay choking. Once the engine starts it runs like a top. I don’t know if there’s a vacuum line to hold the choke until the engine is warm or if I messed up a sporting. Any ideas?
Sometime you have a issue and you wish and think "i wonder if someone somewhere had the same issue i did and they have a video or picture of it?? and then you come along, thank you so much for this, every time you find these godforsaken springs the person doing the work barely skims thru it and blurry at best, yours is clear as water, i have to ask.....if there is already a big honking spring what does that little one do? work against it?
Thanks for the videos. I picked up a well-used Quattro and found a loose part hidden on the back section under grime and grass etc. I've ID'd it as a flywheel guard but have no idea where it goes on the mower. Any suggestions?
So I ordered a carb and voila, perfect. Wiggle those throttle shafts. If loose either get bushings or a carb. I say either because I didn't see bushings available in the parts list. It's possible the throttle shaft is not removable to install bushings. In which case you replace the carburetor.
Hello, I watched your video, follows the spring location,. clean the carb, completely. I can not get it together it back fires.Csn you make suggestion pleass
My neighbor came by asking if I could help him with his lawnmover. Looked on UA-cam and found your video.
Now the machine iz fixed. Thank you very much for doing a difference 🤗
I'm glad it helped. Thanks for watching.
Man, the digital photos were out of sight. That is the first time someone has thought to do that on these repair vids. Thanks and God Bless.
Thanks. I made this video because I couldn't find one to help me. That's when I decided to figure it out and make the video to help others.

Thank you so much! My little spring came off and I wasn't quite sure where it hooked back on! Fantastic!
Thanks Paisteboy! Got a used mower and someone had mutilated the governor springs and tabs. I can get it back together correctly thanks to your video. Really like the close ups! In case someone needs these numbers, the large spring is B&S #691297 and the small spring is B&S #691859.
I also show the parts & part numbers in my other Briggs video that preceded this one. Glad it helped.
Enjoyed the sharp close-up pics to make sense of details. Thank you.
You're welcome. Glad it helped.
Merci beaucoup Paisteboy pour cette vidéo qui donne de très bons renseignements sur le montage des ressorts.
Je vous en prie. Je suis heureux que cela vous ait aidé.
Thank you so much Sir. My springs broke, I got new ones and had no idea where they go. Called B and S and she had no idea. So, you saved the day for me.

You are Awesome dude! Now all i need is the little Spring, fresh Gas and Pray it Starts!
Frank F Cool. Thanks.

Glad it helped. Thanks for watching.
Many thanks for the additional close-ups. Gave me the information I needed to fix the springs.
Thanks, mate. I almost went crazy with this maze of damn springs, pendulums and other hooks... Cherries from Poland :)
Glad it helped. You're welcome.
Thanks !This video was great ! saved me a costly trip to the repair shop . The manual that came with the mower was useless .

I thank you for such clear and concise digital photos. I've blown them up and taped them to the wall above my workbench.. cool!
Absolutely first class description great photos helped me - my linkage was complete bent of of shape (hitting concrete fence rail ) was not quite sure how to bend back BUT now spot on THANKS.
Thank You. I'm glad you found the video helpful.
Fantastic - this helped me to understand and repair my own Flymo QuickSilver 46S which uses a similar engine... many thanks!
I'm glad it helped. Thanks for watching.
thanks for showing a close up.

thank you for taking the time to do this very helpful video.many thanks
Good info on the springs (had them dislodged) has helped me a lot. Thank you, much appreciated.
Thank you so much for this the close-ups were a great help.

Glad it helped.
The linkages are the solid metal rods that are attached to the carbuerator butterfly near the springs.
Invaluable video. good job.
Glad it was helpful! I made this video way back then because I needed this info. I had to figure it out myself and then I was able to share it.
nice job so do you bend the tab on the small spring to ajust the idle speed or the high speed?
@goody1951
No problem. Glad it helped and thanks for watching.
Thanks. I'm glad it helped. Good luck with your mower.
You got it. Thanks for watching.

Hi, great video and training for spring replacement job. Where does the third part number 690347 (link air vane) go?
Cheers from down under.
Robert
thank you! i was wondering what my briggs was missing. the small spring!
Exactly what I needed! Thanks.
You're welcome.
Good video, but can you show the choke, med(idle), fast and off positions of the linkage? When I move my linkage nothing moves and the carb stays at idle
Thanks for the closeups.
You're welcome.

No problem. Thanks for watching.
Bingo! Yay! Thank you so much, paisteboy!
Great views for linkage. But I still dont know why we need the small spring for ? Can it work without the small spring ?
The little spring tightens up as the engine is running to help control the RPM's. It can be adjusted by bending the tab that it's connected to inward or outward. You do need the small spring or the governor will not function. Thanks for watching.

Can't see the linkage, only the springs. Can you help me understand how the linkage goes?
I have a B&S engine on a log splitter. When I start it I have to hold the choke lever in the choke position or it just will not stay choking. Once the engine starts it runs like a top. I don’t know if there’s a vacuum line to hold the choke until the engine is warm or if I messed up a sporting. Any ideas?
To be honest I'm not familiar with that type of choke but you may be on to something with the vacuum line. Thanks for watching.
Thanks been looking everywhere for this
@StumpyTheRooster
Great! Thanks for watching.
Thanks for the pics. I noticed that my linkage is attached backwards. Is that possible?
You're welcome. It could be but I can't say for sure.
those fotos sure were useful ..hard to find material right here i apreciate tht !!
+eriacka
You're welcome.
I went to my local mower repair shop with the make model and engine numbers. They ordered it for me. It was around 10 bucks.
cheers chap ,, very helpful ,sorted mine right out
nice. cheers.

I made this video because there were no videos at the time that showed this anywhere on UA-cam. So I figured it out myself and made the 2 videos.
Yes great vid I am missing the small spring! I will get my hands on a new 1
I really appreciate that. Thanks for watching.
@daylan96
I'm not sure but I think it's some kind of beather hose.
@kr51fer
Glad it helped. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for posting this. Very helpful !
@Stelf1979
You got it. I'm glad that the video helped.
Thanks for the videos. I picked up a well-used Quattro and found a loose part hidden on the back section under grime and grass etc. I've ID'd it as a flywheel guard but have no idea where it goes on the mower. Any suggestions?
It's a Craftsman. It came in the socket seat that I bought about 15 years ago. Thanks for watching.
where you get that cool ratchet nut driver?
So I ordered a carb and voila, perfect.
Wiggle those throttle shafts. If loose either get bushings or a carb. I say either because I didn't see bushings available in the parts list. It's possible the throttle shaft is not removable to install bushings. In which case you replace the carburetor.
