Donyboy……….awesome vid! saved my ass, as my pics were not that good when I took it apart and wasn't too sure on linkage connections......thank you......
I watched this video a dozen times because I found the linkage to be very very confusing as I was trying to reassemble after replacing my carb which was a complete match. Thank goodness for this video. I succeeded!
Your video was a lifesaver! I replaced the carburetor on a twenty year old tiller, I thought I would remember where all the little linkages would go. Wrong! I was lucky to get one right. Thank you for the closeups, I couldn't have finished without your help!
Donnyboy. I couldn’t agree more with John. I’ve had a MTD chipper that’s been out of service for 3 years and this video just got it back in action. Thanks a million!
Thanks very much for your video donyboy. I didn't realise I had the governor spring attached incorrectly after a gasket kit was fitted. Didn't have any throttle control. Now it`s fixed & running as it should. Cheers mate ! 12 yrs ago & Still helping
I rebuilt a carb for a briggs fun power 5hp, you're the only person I've found that gives the detail of the governor spring from tank to linkage, I've been panicking because it's xmas eve and I'm hours away from giving my 8 year old her first go kart, you literally saved the day and her Christmas. Thank you for the detail, you even showed it a second time, god bless.
Mike Carter lol, I had the same problem the other day. And my throttle was stuck open just because I hooked up the spring to the governor arm wrong. I felt so stupid when I realized that it connects to the post that looks like a T.
I had the governor spring on wrong! Thanks for the great detail in your video. It was a huge help especially at 4 minutes and 10 secs when you show how the linkages should look at idle and throttle up. Mine were all jacked up.
Your information is always dead on! I have been a professional auto mechanic for 32 years and I highly respect you and greatly appreciate your help in all that you do! Thank you!
Thank you so much for making this video! Weird story: I was given an OLD Craftsman chipper/shredder. After a few months of use, the plate that holds the choke & throttle broke off & started flopping around. Turns out @ some point someone took off the whole air filter housing, lost 2 screws & never bothered to replaced them. Excessive vibration eventually snapped the little arm that holds that plate to the top of the gas tank. Eventually it just wouldn't stay running & there was very little movement in the throttle lever. I ripped the whole thing apart & fabricated a new plate for the choke/throttle levers. I found the 2 missing screws in the carburetor. They had jammed the fuel intake valve closed. After sitting in pieces on my basement floor for a few weeks, I was having trouble getting the linkage right. Your video was a life saver!
just bought one of these off craigslist. tore it apart thinking id have it back together in one day.... wrong! ive been scrambling to find pictures or something and here you have a video. You just saved my ass! Thanks!
You are a lifesaver my friend. My neighbor was playing mechanic and got his linkage all messed up. I needed some guidance on how it goes together when of course I stumbled upon your video. This should help a bunch!
First time ever I rebuilt carb on a B&S 5hp motor, easier than I thought, but reassembly was the bad bear, this video helped a lot getting things connected correctly! Thanks!
I took the linkage of my Craftsman tiller a part thinking that I could easily reassemble it. Boy, I was wrong. Thank you for the clear explanation and video. My machine runs great.
WOW! 9 years later and here you are saving my ass with this video. I went to replace the carb on my tiller, and like a tool I didnt take a picture before of the linkage. Honestly I'm not entirely sure if I could have figured it out with just a couple pictures. BTW I'm now kicking myself for not ordering a new gas tank also >_
oh my god you are a saint for taking this video. i took pics taking mine apart to clean carburetor but didnt take good enough pics. thought i was SOL until i saw your vid
You've saved me twice this week now! I've got a 5hp that I took apart 2 years ago and I'm finally gonna get it back together. The only thing that worried me was the linkage but not anymore!
Thanks Dony for another outstanding video! Very well produced and will save me a lot of sketching on the project I have now. I found a go kart in the dump and the engine runs but the carb needs a good cleaning. This will help me if I forget how it goes back !!!!! I know this video is five years old, but it is definitely useful today !!
You are the best Donnie. I had thought I had taken enough pictures but I was short and your video saved me some guessing and plenty of time. You have a great skill in explaining the linkages. I will be using your site as a resource and sharing it with my DIY buddies.
Many thanks for the video. You saved me when I had to replace the carb on a 5 hp Briggs on a wood chipper and I couldn’t remember the sequence of where the linkages went. She’s back together and running well. Cheers!
Thank you for you video. i I was fixing my 5hp Briggs and stratton engine. But i was problems with the spring located behind the fuel tank. Now I was able to fix it due to your video. Thank you.
You literally just saved me hours of my life. I tore apart a tiller that I bought all rusted out and re-painted/replaced parts on it and by the time I got back to putting it all together again I completely forgot the configuration.
Thanks a lot Donnie i just tore down my loaner tiller and was wondering just how all the linkages went but with your video it's a walk in the park.,thumbs up!!
Thanks for posting this video. That Craftsman tiller is exactly what I am working on and the surging is what the engine is doing. I thought it was the governor linkage until I heard what you said about the adjustment screw.
Awesome! Your video is exactly what I needed. One suggestion...just for some of us folks who dont see so well, maybe paint your pointer tool bright orange. Thanks again!
Awesome!!! I could not figure out exactly how to put the governor spring back on. Thank you so much for taking such care and making this useful video so complete!!
Thank you, as with many of the other comments my memory of how to put all the linkage and springs back together failed me. I really found you video well detailed and easy to follow. Thanks again.
That is very clear, well explained. I wished there was this type of info on Choke, Throttle & Governor Linkage Configuration for the old Briggs 281707 engine
Don, I just spent a good part of my day cleaning a carburetor on a 3 1/2hp mclane edger similar to this video but it still surges when I give it full throttle 🤔.I sprayed carburetor cleaner all around the carburetor and intake but nothing was discovered. I’m not certain replacing the carburetor is worth it unless I use an aftermarket carburetor. I swapped the plug , no charge.
Thank You for this! I have the exact same engine! I bought it with all the linkage messed up and it was missing the linkage that goes from the governor to the bell crank. My throttle cable connects below the fuel tank on the front at the control arm bracket. 3 mower/small engine shops told me wrong on the linkage! Your video is great, and I appreciate the different angles! My application is an MTD rear tine tiller (model 219-406-000) Now it works and I immediately tilled my front yardThank You!
I have the B&S model 135202, that stopped running about 5 years ago. I broke a muffler stud and tried to easy-out the broken stud, but drilled off-center. Now I am fixing it up but apparently lost the throttle rod, going down. But thanks to your video, I can stop pulling out my hair. Thx.
Look at nice new tank! I wish I had one. I have to figure out why my 5hp briggs runs and then stops then goes again then stops. I put a new diaphram in it last year which helped a bit. Steve's small engine salloon says to check the gas cap for air flow. It has to be that or the carburetor. I did clean the carburetor but I dunno maybe I didn't do it good enough or need a new carburetor. I love your videos. I have learned a lot from them over the years. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Excellent video. Linkage just went haywire on me today. It was working fine 3200 rpms then I noticed bottom of throttle linkage was not screwed down. It moves the throttle because I can see it but only runs at 1500 rpms or less at 1/2 throttle which I can understand. I took off fuel filter. Spring looks weak and stretched. But, again, it was working fine before I noticed throttle cable wasn't screwed down. I did screw it back down but no more 3200 rpms. In fact, it stalls at full throttle. I have a dead lawnmower carcass. I could replace spring. I just don't know what to look for. It's a great old machine. I guess I'll take it to my old neighbor, Jack. He knows everything and can diagnose a problem almost at first sight.I have all winter to look for carb parts. David Alberta
Great video, but I wanted to see you take off the mounting bolts for the carb. My Torx were stripped and I had to modify an open-end wrench to get them out. Needless to say, it was a real pain in the whazoo. Thanx again for the video, it's exactly what I was looking for.
Dony thanks, I'm fond mechanical wing, in my city there are many cheats in the field, do my own thing and I serve many videos, I congratulate you on your two repair work and share!
We the motor not stay running if governor spring is stretched out or is it in the throttle cable that goes up on the handle bar. The mower is a 1979 Kee with a 20+yr old 5hp BS motor. It runs when moved by hand but not throttle. This is my first motor repair. Thanks.
Thank you Donyboy73, You helped me get the carb linkage done correctly on my 1991 5 HP Craftsman Rototiller. I had the choke linkage 180 degrees out of position until I saw your video on how it all went together. Thank you so much!
I have a Craftsman 26" rototiller with a Briggs and Straton 5.5hp engine. Do you have a video showing how to remove the carburetor and perform a rebuild/clean-up? I watched your Toro snowblower carb rebuild video and was able to rebuild mine and it works great now....thanks for sharing the knowledge!!!
Man that's was very informative, I have a Ranch King rototiller with a Brigg's 5 HP and the spring came off when I was tilling a spot for a new garden, I got it back together but it was surging a lot after. I had no idea about the adjustment screw, thanks a bunch that was a awesome video and a huge help!!:)
excellent presentation, thanks for sharing! Does anyone know where I can find a parts list to purchase some of these linkage rods? I'm missing some of them and can't find out what to order. Any help is appreciated, thanks.
the adjusting screw came out on mine as soon as I loosen it 1\4 turn lost it in the dirt. got some 10/32 1 inch screw and a nut to lock in where it runs better. for mine Briggs and Stratton tiller was half a turn.
Thanks for the help. I was trying to find the manufacture number, but after looking all over the engine I could not find it. The video you are showing look just like mine. I wanted to buy a new carburetor, but there seems so many models.
Hi sorry I’m late to the party! I recently took mine apart, and when I put it back to gather when I move the throttle there is no tension, and it only reacts at the idle position. Ounce it goes past like what should be half throttle it’s automatically wide open and the throttle slides all over. You think you could help me out? Great video defiantly deserved my sub!
I made mistake of not taking picture before taking apart and my throttle re-assembly doesn't have the notch your video shows. Also, can't figure out reattach of electrical solenoid to engine head. Any hints you can offer?
Thank You! I have the exact same engine on my MTD tiller. I bought it used and the linkage was not connected properly. My gas tank is very rusty on the inside as well. When funds become available, I'll buy a new one. I wish there were a way to open the gas tank. Thanks, again! Subscribed!
Completely reassembled and found governor spring came off of governor arm. Is there a way to get it on without disassembly. Craftsman tiller a pain to take apart and reassemble
Hey Donyboy, I have a Briggs and Stratton 136212-0015-01 FUN POWER and I am having some problems. The motor will run good for about a minute but then it stalls out and I cannot get it to start again without starting fluid and then it runs for another min or two and stalls again. When It runs tho it seems to run very good. It seems like its a fuel issue but I pulled it all apart and cleaned the carb very good. The engine hasnt been ran more than 3 hours since new but it is about 10 years old, compression is excellent as well.
Your videos have been helpful I’m having trouble with the same engine but on a manco go cart so the throttle is connected on the bottom . I can’t get the throttle butterfly to move when I step on the peddle . Any tips would be helpful and greatly appreciated. Thanks
I dont bother doing this often unless it is warranted. Great fucking video mate. You are well spoken, you thought about what you were gonna talk about and shoot before you actually shot and an apparent excellent editing job. I like you kid. I like you a lot dammit. Keep it up.
I have trouble with the governor not slowing the engine. I didn't work when I got it used, then I cleaned around where the governor went into the shroud and the linkage, it was doing great. Then I used it for awhile and it was working really hard and bouncing the dirt was super hard. Then all of a sudden it started running wide open when not under load
I have one of those 5 horsepower fun power Briggs & stratton's and the Pulse Jet carburetor needs a pickup tube can you buy one of those separate for it
I have a very similar 5hp Briggs and Statton and used your video to put it back together after cleaning. Thank you for including everything! Mine idles fine now, however when I go to engage it into the ground it bogs and dies on me. Did I do something wrong with the assembly? There is no increase in idle when I throttle it with the lever?
This is from 11 years ago but I have a question now!..... is there a video about the arm that attaches to the shaft at the bottom of the engine that actuates the governor mechanism? Mine isn't pulling the throttle to idle.
I have a Briggs on an old Gilson Snowblower and I can not figure out one spring that has to do with the throttle rod that is pulled up to control the engine speed. It is Briggs part number 261331 and was wondering if you ever had to put one of these together and might be able to show me where to hook that spring into the throttle rod and the other end of it also. They have a couple of them on eBay for the pic of it.

Excellent pictures and explanation! Even after running a tool and die shop for 30 years this video made a potential challenge an easy task.
Dude. You saved my ass. I got the life of me couldn't remember how the choke linkage went back on. You rock

Absolutely the best vid on this. I had mine hooked up with a new carburetor but is idling really slow that's if I get it started. Great job.

Like many here, your detailed video saved my butt today....thanks...I was lost
Thank you! I just purchased a trencher that has a 5hp briggs, a couple linkages were off. This helped sooooo much!
I just got a new carburetor and tank for my tiller and this should help immensely. Thanks for making.
Thank god you did this video! I got this put back together and my governor spring came off now I gotta take it all back apart ugh lol

great video, just putting one of these back together so great help to confirm i had everything in the right place

thank you!

I have a device simmilar to this. Thanks for the help. The Choke Was gone and somebody went wild with selfmade wires and links.
Thank you Donyboy73, You helped me get the carb linkage done correctly on my 1991 5 HP Craftsman Rototiller. I had the choke linkage 180 degrees out of position until I saw your video on how it all went together. Thank you so much!

I had no idea about the adjustment screw, thanks a bunch that was a awesome video and a huge help!!:)
Very helpful for my 25 yr old B&S 5Hp pump engine👍
@MazaratiRacingTeam got the tank from a local briggs dealer and it comes with part of the throttle mechanism
Excellent instructions and linkage locations. Thank You and also many thanks for UA-cam.
excellent presentation, thanks for sharing! Does anyone know where I can find a parts list to purchase some of these linkage rods? I'm missing some of them and can't find out what to order. Any help is appreciated, thanks.
Dooood...You are a lifesaver for certain. Super awesome video and super helpful!!
@YankeeIngenuity usually it's a sealed unit with gear oil inside
@blueticecho because this engine has two shafts on it, one for reverse and the other for forward, and since it it a briggs it is worth fixing
the adjusting screw came out on mine as soon as I loosen it 1\4 turn lost it in the dirt. got some 10/32 1 inch screw and a nut to lock in where it runs better. for mine Briggs and Stratton tiller was half a turn.
Thanks for the help. I was trying to find the manufacture number, but after looking all over the engine I could not find it. The video you are showing look just like mine. I wanted to buy a new carburetor, but there seems so many models.
the best pics I have found so far
This was just the walk through I needed. Thanks
I have a 2/1/2 rear tile filler with same carburetor linkage hook up thank I didn’t take any pics this helps a lot

Ounce it goes past like what should be half throttle it’s automatically wide open and the throttle slides all over. You think you could help me out? Great video defiantly deserved my sub!
you would have to check all the linkages again to make sure they are installed correctly, I would need to see it to help more
@@donyboy73 Ok I’ll go back and look. Thank you so much for the help though!!! Much appreciated!
Dude this was perfect, thanks! For the algorithm: 135292 Briggs and stratton
I made mistake of not taking picture before taking apart and my throttle re-assembly doesn't have the notch your video shows. Also, can't figure out reattach of electrical solenoid to engine head. Any hints you can offer?
This was super helpful for a Briggs engine I found in the barn and put on an old roto
Thank You! I have the exact same engine on my MTD tiller. I bought it used and the linkage was not connected properly. My gas tank is very rusty on the inside as well. When funds become available, I'll buy a new one. I wish there were a way to open the gas tank. Thanks, again! Subscribed!
Thank you for your help. I have 2 long linkages I didn't know where the came from.
Thanks mate for your tip on how to stop surging - it worked for me.
Keep it up.
This video saved me a lot of time trying to figure out the linkage that I took off a year ago! Thanks!
Nice video. I am trying to replace the choke spring to keep the choke closed when running. Any ideas. Thanks
Francis
I was lost on how to hook up my linkages thanks for this video
I knew the spring had to go on the governor, but I never would have guessed it went on that way. Thanks!
Donyboy, you make it easy, thanks.
All your videos are so helpful. Thanks so much.
This just saved my butt. Forgot to take a pic before i started. Thanks so much!
+TNOffroadPhiDelt you're welcome
@Z9Falcon yes the rust will clog the carburetor
This is from 11 years ago but I have a question now!..... is there a video about the arm that attaches to the shaft at the bottom of the engine that actuates the governor mechanism? Mine isn't pulling the throttle to idle.
I wish I could still get a new tank, found one for $100 but that's robbery. I'm trying electrolosis instead. Thanks for the linkage details!
I think it adjusts the movement and/or tightness of the collection of linkages that are situated around that area.
Thanks donyboy73 this has been a great help.
Problem removing carb solved thanks to your instructions. Thank you for making such informative videos
