      cale42 I think the Imperial Guard game would better off as a blend between real time squad tactics and FPS, like the Brothers in Arms series. That way we don't have over the top-lore breaking moments of some cannon fodder with a name-tag becoming a near unbeatable one man apocalypse, tearing through chaos marines, greater daemons, orks, necrons and big tyranids like any of those would do to guardsmen.

      +cale42 If you were to do an Imperial Guard game, you'd have to be a Kasrkin, and your standard weapon would need to be a Hellgun or Hotshot Lasgun and everything would go up from there. Otherwise, it would be a very, very short game.

    Hey guys, this guardsman is Steve. Say hi, Steve! "Hai." He's weak, he's small, but he has a lot of heart when there's a gun on the back of his head. Watch him shoot his gun, jack all has happened right? Now watch what happens when he gets himself and a few buddies to place down an Imperial Guard automatic turret in the Space Marine game...

      Huntertyavatar2 In fact, lasgun are notoriously strong against human targets. What the lasgun is - it is a laser assault rifle with effective range of up to 400 meters, weight of about 2,9-4 kg with power cell and the capability of severing human arm or dealing a 100% lethal damage if chest or head is hit and no armour worn by the target. Such weapon prove more than capable of taking on chaos cultists or traitor guardsmen infantry when on normal power setting. Lasgun can also be set to overcharge (2x power for a shot) or overload (4x power for a shot) with a latter mode known to penetrate chaos space marines' power armour on short ranges.

      +Aldo Siffredi No, I'm refering to the normal mass-produced lasgun set to "overload" (that is maximal) power setting. However, on such high power setting lasgun burns through a power cell quickly and is prone to overheating. Hellgun is a more intricate and powerful weapon.

    Friendly NPC weapons routinely demonstrate complete ineffectiveness, because the plot requires it. It happens in Call of Duty, Halo, Space Marines, etc, etc. Real Lasguns (ok, they don´t really exist, but bear with me) are not to be fucked with. The Lasgun uses a small portable capacitor power pack to produce a focused pinpoint laser beam which is strong enough to take an ordinary human arm off with one shot.

      If the Lasgun appeared in other Sci-Fi universes, everyone the Guardsman would be fighting - such as Stormtroopers - would want these weapons, given how in comparison to Blaster Rifles in Star Wars, Lasguns are far more accurate, possess a faster projectile speed, and a greater impact force if they can dismember unprotected human limbs as the lore suggests.
      But given how over the top everything in 40k is, the Lasgun is only useful in massive numbers, much like how single-shot Muskets in our time were useless on the battlefield if the numbers behind the rifles weren't up to snuff for a volley line formation.

      Unfortunately, The normal humans are usually the ones using lasguns. Eldar flip and bob around, making amassed fire almost necessary to even hit them, Orks are like onions, they have layers, Chaos Marines are... just what they are, Tau field all their infantry with sniper grade weapons, Tyranids use the Guard’s own tactic against it.
      They usually don’t even send out a full assault of purely infantry anyway, Space Marine forgot to give them their officers and such.

      The stupidest part is how lasguns, that can easily blow off limbs and make huge hole in concrete, are portrayed as ineffective and weak flashlights, while chainswords are portrayed as powerful, when it's literally just chainsaws with different handles, wielded by overgrown men. In case you don't know, chainsaws are really bad at cutting flesh and even clothes, always getting stuck, and completely useless against actual armor. Extra strength will not help.

    @Bailey2468 12 років тому +4

    Actually, canon-wise, the lasgun is a very powerful weapon. In many books about Imperial Guardsmen, you often find a part where a lasgun will punch through power armor. The problem isn't with the weapon, it's with the shooter. If all guardsmen were trained to be elite marksmen, the Imperium wouldn't need to worry about being beset on all fronts.
    In Gaunt's Ghosts, a Vitrian Dragoon killed an Iron Warrior in one shot, using a full powered lasgun. Boom headshot is applicable there.

    Actually if we examine the fluff, the lasgun should be fairly adept at killing things that wear light armour or none at all. Tyranids are excluded because they have exoskeletons that are supposed to shrug off bolts sometimes. We can't go by the video games as we should look at the tabletop. One lasgun could bring down a Space Marine in the tabletop... at least I'm pretty sure it could. Lasguns are weak because GW says they're weak in the fluff. In real life, I could see it killing Orkz easily.

There really should be a universal answer to this debate or argument. All I know is that with using the lasgun on a human being, it'll basically burn them into slag. I've also heard when facing against Orks, it just needs more amount of concentrated fire. Seriuosly, this is driving me nuts.

  • @Cronocke
    @Cronocke 11 років тому

    It depends on what game rules you want to refer to. By the tabletop wargame rules, they're the same gun. At least one of the tabletop RPGs gives the triplex a sniping mode that the regular lasgun lacks, making it sort of a bridge between a lasgun and a long-las. As far as how the shots look, well, Star Wars guns are more how Tau weapons look, most likely. IG lasgun shots are either a brief red ray, or just a muzzle flash.

  • @PhantomRaider100
    @PhantomRaider100 11 років тому

    To be honest, I know there's a lot of Lasgun models, marks and patterns out there. Yet I don't see why there's so many if they function the same. Also, when I read the Imperial Guard Codex and at the part where it showed a section called "The Ubiquitous Lasgun", it said there sought after model of lasgun and it's apparently the Triplex pattern. Can somebody clarify why this is the case. How's this lasgun model different than any other model that's out there in the 40K universe?

  • @Doomcharger
    @Doomcharger 11 років тому

    In the TTRPG I've killed people with low-end weapons but considering the fact that I switch to weapons that DON'T deal 1D10+3 PEN 0 as quick as humanly possible should tell you something. A Boltgun deals 1D10+5 PEN 4 and re-rolls its damage die. Tau Pulse Rifles roll 2D10 and some change. At least it's not a Bow/Crossbow... So while it may be equal to a Modern weapon it's still a furious flashlight. Hell... even shotguns do more damage.

  • @ellobodehielo
    @ellobodehielo 12 років тому

    actually lasguns are superior to modern day assault rifles, but the tabletop does a terrible job at accurately representing stuff.
    for example, bolters are described to fire a projectile that penetrates the victims skin and explodes. in rules that should mean: "for every hit, immediately take a save. if you fail you automatically take a wound. if you make it, roll normally for wounds but ignore saves afterwards."

  • @Bailey2468
    @Bailey2468 12 років тому

    Oh really? In the Blood Angels Omnibus, a Blood Angel had lost his bolter in the midst of combat, and resorted to taking a dead gaurdsman's lasgun. He was killing chaos space marines with it. As I have said before, the lasgun is a very powerful rifle, the issue is the accuracy of the guardsman.
    Look at the needle rifle, it fires a laser to punch through armor before a needle flies through the hole and injects a neurotoxin.
    Lasguns, fire the same laser but more intense, to kill, not pen armor.

    Honestly, the Guardsman are seriously underplayed for what they deal with. Granting, they are not as good as Space Marines (believe me, I'm a Space Wolves fan), but lets put it into perspective here: one Guardsman, with all his gear and training, is worth AT LEAST 10 US Marines (or your nation's equivalent ground unit), or 2 Spec Ops Soldiers. A squad of 50 Guardsman could easily take on and wipe the flow with a group of Earth's finest, and barely take casualties.

    @abanofeso Truth be told, I think it's just a gameplay mechanic. In the novel Rebel Winter, to give an example, the lasguns used by the Vostroyan Firstborn are sufficiently powerful to gun down orcs, although they prove ineffective against those wearing armour. The lasfire would just heat up the metal plates and piss the armoured bastards off.
    All the same, I think you're right about the logistics, but the lasguns still lack the kinetic punch of a ballistic rifle.

  • @TAWEEYZZ

    a lasgun shoots a highly focused beam of light into one spot that it vaporizes a small surface of the targeted area into a explosion. imperial guard veterans can these guns as a makeshift grenade by overcharging the gun and tossing it at the enemy. the explosion of the gun is powerful enough to damage dreadnought armor or power armour.

    not only do lasguns actually damage things but if you have the bloody mess perk, you get a pretty good idea of what a bolter would do to the average human body: leaving nothing of you but a red cloud and some unidentifiable chunks that might have been parts of a body at some point.

    Depends on the regiment really, for example the Brimlock regiments from imperial glory seem to have adequate knowledge on their las-weapons, though comparing them to a founding from some random hive world.... Still, it's just nice to know i'm not the only one out there that appreciates the lasgun XD

    you do know who rewrote blood angel history it was matt ward who broke everything which proves lasguns dont do diddly jack, and the needle rifle is a different concept. sure the lasgun could go though a vulnerable point in power armor but in reality it wont do much to anything in armor

    yea okay so the lasgun is a little waek going up aginst an 8ft mass of musscle and on a rampage
    well how about your prescious bolter? all the balistic weapons are underpowered becuse the developers want to drive you into melee it is their core mechanic after all

    Lasguns are not that weak. And they can fire full automatic.

  • @TheVoiceOfReason93

    And ironically enough, though its suppose to be the weakest weapon of the game, its still according to lore powerful enough to punch through concrete and blow gaping holes in your chest with one shot. That speaks volumes of what kind of universe WH40K is.

    @Joel354vanfanel = should be twin linked
    imagine that... First rank fire, second rank fire order at less than 12 inches with a combined unit of 30 = 90 twin linked shots mmmm now that would be lush!!! maybe then my guard army might start winning

    @DomEReapeR Yeah, I was disappointed that the Orks didn't have bloody chunks blown off and still continue fighting. Proly to keep game rated M or something. Also was disappointed at the lack of Orks saying "HUMIEZ" or "HUMUNZ" lol

    @CBAwiththisshit logistics of ammunition, its easier to shoot that flashlight a 100 times, and to bring 100 bullets, remember that they need to be deployed instantly, and also i believe the energy cells of those weapons can be recharged.

    @Antigan15th to be fair, the guard in that game held out against superior numbers for 3 weeks or so before the soace marines got there. there were also never more than 7 or so guardsmen on screen at a time. guardsmen only work in large groups.

    2 things....1: Those are not lasguns..Those are Fucking Nerfed hotshots In a lasgun costume... "Pewpewpewpewpew" 2: If you call these weak, Just wait till you get shot by them by traitor guardsman, Glass Cannons from hell (Literally!)

    As we see in this demonstration, the standard issue Imperial flashlight doesn't do didley. Where as a good bolter...*Blam* That's why Imps come in squads of 40 or 50 men! Now that's a whole lot of didley!!!

    Guardsmen are more suited to fight heretics and cultists. I freaking LOVE the Imperial Guard, sadly all people want are more "SPEHHS MAHRENS". So of course the Imperiums finest have been weakened to make way for them.

  • @PhantomRaider100

    Also, how does a Lasgun fire its ammunition? Is it just like a beam like in the DOW RTS games or is it like a bolt like in the SW movies? Also, colour of beam/bolt is it? Red, blue, red-orange, yellow, what? I must know!

  • @Eisenhorn6629
    @Eisenhorn6629 12 років тому

    .....SPAYCE MAHRYNES!! If it was novel canon (i.e gaunt's ghosts, marine battle novels that feature the guard etc), a guardsman should technically be able to drop an ork with one well placed shot, but alas, video games.

    @Joel354vanfanel LOL! You should write some stuff for the new codex, I ain't joking. These descriptions are priceless.

    It's a funny thing. At hard level gurdsmans can't give any damage to a single orc. But, if you stand before a little group of heretics (with full armor, health and magic sign) you are going to die!

    Compared to modern weapons, a Lasgun has the power to blow off a mans arm with a single shot (approximately the power of a .30 cal round) Too bad everything else in 40k is so fucking powerful.

  • @dragonling748

    Massed fire from lazguns can penetrate just about any armor. Compared 21st century weapons, these things are like anti tank rifles. But in 40k, that's just not enough

  • @thijshagenbeek6554

    People call this plot firepower. I deny such false lies. The Ork Waagh energy was at play here. The Orks thought those beamy guns could hurt them. And hurt them they did.

  • @jmanners

    Aren't lasguns basically shooting lightsabers though? It seems that it's not really the weapon that's weak (though they don't compare as well to the Bolter) but the lack of proper training given to the handler.

    Makes me wonder. If there was a limping ork with a cleaver that could still move but very slowly and a single, healthy guardsman, who would win?
