  • How I start my Big Green Egg.
    I wouldn't try this if it is cold outside, it could crack.
    Please be careful.

    Hey you just gave me an idea on why to keep my old stainless steel grill. I was getting ready to put it out on the curb.

    I concur with the others. Using the sideburner of gas grill was for chimney starter was ingenious!

    Went to Home depot and got to pieces of ducts to create the chimney and it works like a charm. Also works on chimney starter. Put it on and a few minutes later the flames are rolling up.

    Genius! I knew that there was a good reason for that underutilized burner on the side of my Char-Broil.that somebody, somewhere would figure out. Thanx!

    I burnt off my gasket accidentally while "burning out" my egg after doing a bunch of greasy long low temp cooks. My neighbour distracted me with beer or two and when I got back to the egg it was glowing on the inside. And I mean glowing- conservatively, it was easily over 1200 degrees in the BGE.
    Usually, I light the egg with a heat-gun but have gone back to a chimney starter to save time when wanting a hot egg. Thanks for the stack idea! Will definitely incorporate this tool into my routine.

    Why would you want your Green Egg at 750° anyway? 750° is only used for a Burn Out. ( Cook The Dirt, Oil, Etc out of it )
    You can't Smoke or Cook at that Temp.

      As he points out this is the air temp not the egg temp. As soon as you take off the chimney to heat will normalize to around 400

  • @Jwirlwind
    @Jwirlwind 10 років тому +2

    I use a propane trash burner to lite the Egg. Don't need all that side burner crap. Hold the trash burner on the lump and in less time that this I am well over 600

  • @ericsilver5603
    @ericsilver5603 4 роки тому

    There are blowers that fit into the intake of the BGE; a bit more expensive and slightly slower, but perhaps safer.

  • @chapmjw
    @chapmjw  11 років тому +2

    If it's clean and you have good air flow you can keep it around 550. But most of the time 400-450 is about the best you can do. Only danger is when it's really hot 500+ and you close the stack to reduce flames then a few seconds later open the lid.

    what a friggin awesome idea. I cant believe there isnt ONE other video with this. Kick ass. I assume the air vent on the bottom has to be wide open for air?????

    Get a open stainless steel fire grate on amazon and a looftlighter. Move all small used charcoal to bottom of egg. Light top side normal with looftlighter. Shut top and jam looflighter in air hole in bottom. It lights the small stuff and makes pushes hot air into egg. Just watch gauge climb quickly. No need for side burner or hot metal.

    • @ringkingpin
      @ringkingpin 9 років тому

      ***** I had a looftlighter until it finally died. I now just stick to using a mapp gas torch, way faster.

    Just wondering if the high-temperature gasket can take sustained 1200 F. Also, how long will 1200 F last for a given amount of lump charcoal? With a Weber kettle, it takes at least 15 minutes to get up to searing temperature, but the temperatures drops immediately at the point.

  • @birther1968
    @birther1968 10 років тому +1

    Okay is it cheating when you start the charcoal with the propane?? Just kidding, great idea if you have both grills. I hate starting chimmey starter with paper. The paper ends up in the food. Please explain more the extra chimney top? Works great.

  • @birther1968

    I put the extension on top of the egg and it works. Question cost of the propane to light it for 4 minutes.

    I'm kind of surprised that you haven't cracked that egg yet

    • @Barrettkthnx
      @Barrettkthnx 8 років тому

      Cracking occurs due to thermal shock. You would have to be cooling it rapidly, not heating. Probably why he said not to do it when cold out.

    • @floid33556
      @floid33556 Рік тому

      I’ve never cracked mine doing this, but it prob would if you just left it wide open for 15 minutes . However doing a clean burn with a hair dryer did crack it to bits. Didn’t wait long enough for the ceramic to get to temp.

  • @jasonmiles7285
    @jasonmiles7285 5 років тому

    I just use a BBQ dragon a the intake. Works great and gets up to temp in about the same time.

    So the long pipe is the reason to the high temperature going up so fast?

    • @dmeenkster
      @dmeenkster 2 роки тому

      It creates a strong updraft that pulls more air into the bottom. Basically turns your grill into a rocket stove.

    Lighting the coals with propane is cheating. I would also like to see a side by side without the stack. How much time does it save?

  • @peteflynn3923

    This is pretty good, but if you want to see some serious quick-lighting that is without any aftertaste, try some liquid oxygen! Not very much though . . . and stand back.
