RIP, Shane. Feels like it was both a long time coming and utterly shocking all at once. Incredible musician and lyricist AND one of the most distinctive voices in music. I'm sorry he's gone but grateful for the music he left behind.

That's my favorite line too, although I love "I'll walk in on my feet, but I'll leave there on my back" too. MacGowan has great phrasing too, the way all those syllables rise and fall together. I'm really intrigued by the outlook or philosophy of this song. One hears it in all kinds of places. "When you're sitting back, in your rose pink Cadillac, / making bets on Kentucky Derby day, / well, I'll be in my basement room, with a needle and spoon / and another girl, to take my pain away", as the Stones put it, has the same expression of suffering, and wanting its cessation. Jesus & Mary Chain too -- "I wanna die, I wanna die" just means, I want to stop suffering.
I’m shedding a tear or two here. What a lyricist Shane was RIP good man.

They're English. Shane was born in Kent; England - as were all of the band. They're a London band, that came out of the the punk scene. Shane was always at the Sex Pistols gigs in London when he was 16.
