So the idea of filling the ruts with gravel sounded great at the time. That is until I got back out there and it was even more wet. After this video though, the road will now dry smooth....
PS I’ve been told this tractor is a 2N, an 8N and a mixture of both. So I just call in a 9n... close enough, right?

From the country of rain and mud, England, we would first put a layer of hardcore that was made up of broken bricks and crushed concrete making a thick, stable base. Once this is run over and when settled, top with the gravel you have. Unless there is a base under you mud, you might just lose you gravel. btw you are doing really great 😊

Some of the first roads laid through wet area's out here in the West were known as corduroy roads. They were built by placing logs across the road and putting rock in between. You can imagine how bumpy they were, but they skidded logs on them really well. When we have mucky places, like your road, we first lay down a heavy layer of larger base rock to raise the road above the water, making a hump in the center to allow the water to drain off to the sides, then put down the more expensive gravel when we can afford it. We have miles of back roads done in this way, that have never been graveled, but we also have a lot of natural deposits of shale, which you may not have available. Road building can sure be a headache with mucky clay soils and low lying wet area's, especially if you have lots of rain. I wish you all the best in your road building efforts Robert. It is certainly a challenge.

This may be a stupid idea but the logging companies up north used to put down corduroy roads over areas too sandy or mucky for their trucks to go over. You have all the materials on the farm to do it. You don't have to do the whole road just the parts that get real swampy. Might be something to look into. Keep Safe ❤Keep Well ❤

This reminds me my grandpa talked about building "corduroy roads" when his father bought a marshy property to farm. You have lots of free material for it in the woody vines and lay them across the road maybe a few inches wider than your wheel base and it will help prevent the ruts and compaction.

Also the water that used to be tied up in wisteria and shrubs is now running off, it is LOTS of water. you need a little front end loader, dirt...a robcat...and HELPERS! Some land-sculpting to be done. Corduroy road is a REALLY good, cheap, fast alt, but that dip has too much organic matter to last long...and, yes, stinks. Darn pandemic.

In the meantime, dont keep driving over it again and again.,theres enough land to go around it. Avoid the mud till the weather is better . Or get a wood chipping machine and fill it in with all the tree clippings. You've made hard work of a simple job x

Its a huge job don’t ever get discouraged just put one foot in front of the other and yu will get it done. I see so much accomplished already. When the job is big, it’s hard to see all the advancement with your eyes. Believe yourself to know even the muddy road for the farm truck will improve as u work towards figuring it out. Is there higher ground yu could use as a driveway or is it all flat? How about getting some friends out to lay rock down then cover with gravel where the truck treads are Only a thought Been there done that. It works unless it’s too sandy to hold rock in place. ♥️♥️💕💕

How about your local city tree trimming ( city or town uses) service , always have mulch from the trees for free. It might be a temporary fix but mud but might work.

Oh, Robert. I'm sure those bags of pretty rock were Really expensive! 😞
Back in the the day, my dad would take a dump truck and get a load of gravel from the gravel pit. They used it to fill or to raise the elevation of an area. That would keep that road dry. Maybe you could ask around (city/county road dist., developers, landscapers) for a less expensive source of fill gravel.
I know there will always be challenges. Most of the curse words I learned were from hearing my dad's phone conversations.☺️ I know you'll find a way to got 'er done. 💜🤗

They weren’t. It cost $20, which is expensive considering a truck bed full runs about $40. That being said, I was going for a temp measure, so I could get the ole Ford down it and unload it.

I'd watch a video of them learning how to do that and fixing that road. Sounds interesting. I had the same, much smaller, problem when I bought my home. Gravel was good at first but now after a few years that expensive rock is sinking into the mud too and needs re-done. Something to think about :)

You also need to place a ditch beside the road first on the low side of level ground. Then when the drive way is dry put more gravel on ,then the gravel will hold itself into position .When it is wet the gravel will be gobbled up

I'll trade you our greenbrier vines for your wisteria. Greenbriers have large thorns and are not deterred by denim. We call them "wait a minute vines." Cause when they get you, it will make you stop. So be thankful wisteria vines don't have thorns.

You need to get a couple of 20 ton truck loads of gravel. I had ordered two 20 ton trucks of crusher run many years ago for a fairly short drive way and ended up having to get a total of 4 by the end of the day, and could have used more.

Without gravel you are going to need to make bar ditches to allow the road surface to drain. Maybe even with gravel as flat as that all looks.

Water runs downhill and your road is in the lowest spot - no wonder it stays wet. I know you didn't have much choice where you put the road because of where all the large trees where but maybe consider where the higher areas are and if you could move the road to higher ground. I do like the cement powder suggestion from another commentor because a dump of gravel will just keep sinking forever and there will be no end to adding gravel. You do need a non-sinking base to build up the current location of your road. Also there is a reason why dirt and gravel roads need ditches, to catch runoff and redirect it away from the road. And like many others have said "a solution will present itself when the time is right". I just hope the time is now. 🤣
