      Yes, you shouldn't play rapid and blitz to decide who is the world classical champion. Same way you don't play classical to decide who is world rapids or blitz champion.

      @Steve Yes, he did. The guards didn't let him in, but he paid them to have some chess magazines given to Garry. Kasparov later said something along the lines that this one gesture from someone who was his opponent meant to him more than all the no-reaction from his supposed friends (somewhat hard to translate word by word from Russian) and from then on Karpov and Kasparov are on real friendly terms

      Karpov was always an admirer of Kasparov. Even the world championship of 1985, saw him openly praising the young challenger. A gentleman through and through. When Kasparov won, he was the first to congratulate him. Karpov himself never got his deserved WC match with Bobby but did have the humble attitude to except change when change was due. One of my all time favs Anatoly.

In a similar way to Wesley let's take caruana and say we'll he's clearly objectively stronger than both fischer and kasparov if you analyze with an engine. Karpov became a very strong positional player and that is the result of his intensive preparations to defeat fischer. During those times, games and tons of variations of analysis were written down by his assistant to multiple large notebooks and this proves that karpov invested a large amount of time and energy in his preparations against Fischer

    • @a.m.armstrong8354
      @a.m.armstrong8354 4 роки тому +2

      I agree, and reason enough for Fischer to decline. Karpov notes he could beat anyone given the degree of preparation he made in 75. Karpov then faced the same against Kasparov, which he wryly notes as the degree of support Kasparov had from modernising factions in the Soviet chess&state machine. Karpov is right to note Kasparov's emotionality as a weakness. I agree that had Kasparov lost in Seville, he would not have recovered psychologically to be able to mount a successful world championship challenge. What Kasparov did was repeat the Alekhine trick of wearing down his opponent.

    I’m old and was there back in the early 70s. I’m convinced Fischer took fright and just kept piling on condition after condition onto FIDE to avoid a match with Karpov. To be fair I think Fischer would have beaten Karpov, but it was still possible he could lose because Karpov’s play at the time was at it’s height, with countless flawlessly played positional victories and Karpov then was losing just ONE game a year on average !! (a phenomenal statistic). After doing the rounds of the American talk shows as world champion and each time telling everyone how invincible he was I think Fischer would not risk a match defeat to Karpov because he would then have to face that same America defeated. What a great loss for chess that the Karpov-Fischer match never took place.

    History isn't kind to Karpov because of his attitude in the 80s with the Politburo. However, on a strictly chess level, he was an immense player. Probably the greatest of all time with Capablanca, Fischer and Kasparov. As a decent 1900 player myself, I find Karpov's games to be strategical crystals, I understand and admire them. Kasparov is much more about tactics and calculation, you can't learn much from them. Karpov's games however are fascinating to analyse for club players. There are like Capablanca's games, only more offensive.

    • @a.m.armstrong8354
      @a.m.armstrong8354 4 роки тому

      You've scorched the Kasparov myth well. Kasparov setting himself up to play the man not the board. Fischer, Capablanca and Karpov, along with Kramnik, played fantastic positional chess way beyond their eras in terms of contributions to the chess canon, especially the first two!

    • @bobbwc7011
      @bobbwc7011 3 роки тому

      @@a.m.armstrong8354 ? Kasparow was positionally very sound and played many positional games. He just added psychology on top of that. Look at Anand, a pitiful creature in the presence of Kasparow, mentally jammed up and never a strong challenger to Kasparow. Resilience is important in chess. Technically, this was Fischer's biggest weakness, his autistic wild notions. Spasski just should have said "no" and insisted on the regular rules and he would have won. You cannot be world champion when you are too frail.

    • @bobbwc7011
      @bobbwc7011 Рік тому

      You must be the poorest 1900 ever if you honestly think you cannot learn from Kasparov but from Karpov. It is the other way around; you cannot learn much from Karpov if you don't have his extreme gifts of "natively" understanding positional chess. Most chess players have to learn positional chess, have to work through it for their entire career in the hopes to get a better and better grasp of it. Players like Capablanca, Karpov or Carlsen are different in that regard - but! big downside! - positional chess is the most boring and the least comprehensible chess style. Now, Kasparov on the other side: Not only did AlphaZero prove that Kasparov's way of positional and tactical evaluation is the only correct one, but Kasparov was a real artist. Unlike Karpov, he took great risks to try unusual things, he played supersharp stuff, so-called complex dynamic positions like the Najdorf or the Grünfeld. That's stuff Karpov and Carlsen don't like at all. Kasparov said in an interview once, after one of his crazy creative attack games, that you have to go for games like that no matter what. You have to be ready to receive a bloody nose, to lose, and it takes you 10 attempts for 1 of those immortal games. Kasparov is very accessible and very instructive, because unlike Tal, Kasparov was never positionally unsound.
