The Nearness Of You is a well known jazz standard. It was interpreted by such greats as Sarah vaughn or recently Norah Jones.
In this The Nearness Of You guitar tutorial I'll show you my chord melody arrangement. That means, that The Nearness Of You guitarchords and the melody are played simultaniously. This is also called an instrumental or solo guitar arrangement.
I reharmonized this tune quite a bit. I will show you and explain how and why those chord substitutions I used work. So these are not exactly The Nearness Of You Norah Jones guitar chords, but rather a possible way to play it as a jazz standard instrumental.
I'll show you everything note for note and there is a complete playthrough of my The Nearness Of You guitar cover.
Of course I've also made The Nearness Of You guitar tab and a The Nearness Of You backing track, so you can start to play along right away.
I hope you like my The Nearness Of You guitar lesson and give it a fat thumbs up. Please share the love and the knowledge. I have many more guitar tutorials up here on my UA-cam channel. Check out my Chord melody Playlist for more tutorials like this one.

Hi Sandra, thanks so much for getting back to me. I love your arrangements. They flow so well, and love the way you explain them. I have been playing for quite a while so it really makes sense. Glad that My Foolish Heart is on your list. It is so beautiful, especially the way Al Jarou sings it. Simply incredible, and also the way he sings The Nearness of You. Hope you give him a listen. I am located in Northern California, just across the Bay from San Francisco. I put The Nearness of You into youtube and there you were. Lucky for me. Almost got the whole tune down now thanks to you. At first I just wrote down all the chords that you gave in your video. Then I thought it would be so much easier just to join your workshops. Again glad I did. What a gold mine of musical treasure for the guitar. Thanks .. Tony

You have the whole package. Johnny Smith himself would have loved to follow your video lesson in chord structure. Thank you Sandra for the great video. As always you explain everything with great clarity. Àlso you cover both the theoretical and technical info. simultaneously and in great detail, seemingly effortlessly which is something very few other teachers manage to do.
The gem for me in this video is the (b5 substitution) of a maj7 chord for a minor one. I was familiar with the b5 dominant substitution but not this one. Having this possibilty highlighted provides the oppertunity to play much more interesting chord progressions in an arrangement.
So thank you very much for the enlightenment. Long may you continue your great work.

Oh yeah, sub 5 subs are great. You can almost sub everything für everything 😁. But as a general rule : Dom 7 for Dom 7, maj 7 for ø , Dom 7 for m7

Don't know if makes sense to you, because on how I happen to be wired, when I play guitar, paint, or anything similar, lose my ability to speak, can't communicate, wired to focus on one or the other. Not adept at conversing at both, very cool to actually name a chord, recognize it, and express it normally, with others, After listening to your videos, after 50 years, give or take, keep up what you do, very cool.

    • @GuitarversumSandraSherman

Not yet, but I'll look into these and see if they're suitable for chord melody and, if I can come up with a playable arrangement. Nightingale had been requested a couple of times already. So there may be a chance. It always takes time though. I shoot around 4-8 weeks in advance.
