I managed to play a couple that were badly warped which was surprising. for something that resembles a dentist's drill the EXPERT is by far the best of the 2nd Generation British moving coil pickups in my opinion.

@@lowlightpiano7110 I am a Christian as well.. But what does that have to do with the comment, the discussion, the question, or the content of the video? It's great to try and spread the Word, but be logical about it. You have your own channel -- was it to try and get more people to view your vids? Just don't do it like this.
I never understood why they did that. I have seen microgroove records for children designed to play at 78 rpm like this one, and 45 rpm records with the wide groove of the 78 type. Maybe the engineers just weren't paying attention.
The clarity of the sound is incredible! My impressions of vinyl were formed from a well-worn collection of LPs and jukebox discard 45s, so that may have had something to do with it ;-)
Could it be that they used 78 rpm to avoid patent issues? Because 7" records with 78 rpm existed long before and the microgroove alone cannot be protected under patent right.
@@martinh3904 probably it was never made in this part of the world, our indigenous first microgroove was released in 1961 and the production of 78 rpm's ceased in 1970. It's wonderful keep them for posterity
I wasn't aware that Gala Goldentone 5" 78s were microgroove. I thought they were designed for children to play acoustically on the likes of the toy Marx Lumar gramophone with steel needless as used on gramophones. Regardless, it does sound rather impressive I have to agree.
very interesting oddity. Just knew there were some 10" 78s pressed on vinyl in England (I think I remember some from Mercury / Freddie Bell). But about minimal wear, is the whole pickup not weighing a bit heavy on the stylus? Can't see no counter weight from the angle the film was recorded.
This version of the EXPERT has a leaf spring under the front pivot to reduce needle pressure to a tiny amount. Later versions had a screw on the top that infinitely varied the spring pressure....but cluttered the sleek lines !
That sounds far better than I expected it to; truly excellent reproduction. Is it that good (or even better) with a direct line feed instead of recording with a mic to the speaker? I was shocked that sounded as good as it did.
It was found broken in the U.S & imported which cost more than the pickup it'self. A really fiddly thing to rewind the broken coil on & also difficult to get the rubber damping to work properly. there was a lot of swearing restoring this one but in the end it was worth it. Hooked up to a modern amplifier, the sound was pretty amazing, Favourite recording I made was with the Mack-the-Knife track after I had figured out that Micro-groove simply means MONO Vinyl ! Glad you like it !
You say (at 0:33 and in the text) that it was designed for 78 microgroove records. (No, I didn't know those existed either!) Is there anything specific about 78 microgroove, though? Surely it would play _any_ microgroove record, regardless of speed (probably best only to do mono ones, granted). [Presumably it would also play non-microgroove records as well, though not optimally for stylus shape reasons.]
Surface noise is not intrinsic to 78s - I'm pretty sure this was on vinyl. Even _some_ shellac 78s have minimal surface noise, if in excellent condition and not containing the abrasive component many had.

Looks like it doesn't have much clearance to tolerate warped records.

The harmonies are phenomenal. They definitely don't sing like that anymore. Sounds great!!!
Aww you are playing my signature tune and it sounds amazing!
I remember that song! I used to love his one video tape that came with 3D viewers. Wore that poor tape out playing it so much lol.
Yea that's a first for me - 78RPM microgroove? Pretty cool setup there. Sounds great. Would love to see more info on this unusual cart and tonearm

Good music, those two were geniuses
Love this! Like others have posted, I didn't even know there was a 78-microgroove!!
Stunning clarity. Thanks for sharing.
7-inch 78 RPM microgroove kiddie records were a big part of my childhood.
The "big name" label for them was Cricket's "Bonus Play" series.

That sounds GREAT!
Wow! It makes today's records sound like those from the 1950s!
I can only wonder and fantasise about how this would sound playing back original Blue Note mono LP's and 78's.
Originally released in the U.S. on Golden Records in 1961 [R663].
Featuring the "Golden Chorus", and orchestra under the direction of Jim Timmens.
so cool. i had those yellow records when i was a kid. they didnt sound that good though
Great upload. Sounds sweet with this little one
thanks
Never saw a 7 inch microgroove 78 in my life
Iv'e got 4 of them & this was the best of the best.
At least I got a decent recording out of it. !

this is a great record plYer
Futuristic tonearm😳🤣.
Very nice and unique! Was the audio in the video a direct line input feed or was it recorded by a microphone from a speaker?
it was the latter ! thanks for the kind words.
Stunning

Since there weren’t any close up shots of the cartridge I’ll assume the stylus is mounted without a cantilever, similar to a Decca cartridge.
no, this is pre-cantilever, the stylus is the lower end of the coil armature with a central T section pivot.
Hypothetically, because the pickup has a microgroove stylus, Could you play a 33 or a 45 with it? How would it sound?
Very interesting player I actually have b e l l 78 RPM and the cavalcade label if you want to look any up there to make a Route 78 on vinyl
I'm astonished at the lack of surface noise from this record. Did you clean up the audio with software before uploading the video?
Hi, it's recorded direct from a Mic without any tampering. Thanks,
Surface noise is not intrinsic to 78s - I'm pretty sure this was on vinyl. Even _some_ shellac 78s have minimal surface noise, if in excellent condition and not containing the abrasive component many had.
I have a promotional 45 of when the full length yogi bear motion picture was released, i wonder if it's worth anything.
And to think that there are some who spend thousands of dollars on tonearms.
What exactly is the moving coil here? Is is the pickup or part of the pickup? Or is it the record or part of the record?
Imagine the needle being connected to a piece of steel rod with wire wrapped around the upper part in a tiny coil, that's what is inside this pickup.
i like 1953 when they let me hear any word without any audio degradation
