2:22 moment about the sanding absolutely creased me bro!!! Good to see that dude still chilling in the field again man aha. Mo!!! Those trucks look super loose aha. You dare devil you hahaha. Keep up the wicked laughs and videos guys! 👊🏽
i do like the direct drive. My board has hub motors at 3000 watt total and 90 mm wheels. The main complaint i have with large wheels is you are higher up which makes foot braking a bit harder. My standard longboard has 80 mm and is a drop-through which is easy to stop. Another problem with hub is that urethane tends to stick to metal and the result is the urethane sticks then let's go and you get a clicking noise. I now use silicone lubricant to prevent. Silicone is safe on plastics. Great video thank you.
I still think outboard motors with a gear drive is the best way to go. makes fixing things and modding boards a lot simplier for most people! Love the video!
I 100% agree, they need a smaller contact patch on the 110mm wheels. I had to switch back to my Abec11 90mm just due to the torque-boards having a ridiculously wide contact patch.
it just makes everything look MASSIVE and I would use my ABEC 97mm reflys but there is not enough clearance IMO and I was finding a lot of damage to the motor cans after just 5 miles of riding.
How was he able to get the TB wheels on the DD system? Is replacing wheels on direct drive the same as belt drive where you need to buy the correct pulleys and all?
Try dkt on a dropdown-through. Mo should know narrow wheels give less grip. I say widen the tb 110's. Like the channel guys. Stay cool brothers. Aloha from hawaii.
Hi Lee,i would love to know how powerful these direct drive motors are compare to a strong belt drive and hubs? How small wheels can you use without being afraid of damage from running over stones? 97 mm Abec? Thanks
I would say 97mm wheels are cutting it fine. You really want 110mm or above mate. They are quite powerful as they are.low kv but gearing is obviously 1:1. Worth a punt but I would say if you like the look. They are not for me
I've never been a big fan on the double kingpins on my Evolve AT. They just feel vague and drifty. Hopefully there will be a direct drive on more traditional trucks soon..
Me neither bud, cant get on with them at all. I have tried DKP on the Backfire ranger and loved them on that though, so I think for me it's something to do with Evolves trucks that I dont like
@@MrPhillipsTheChangeAgent I think smaller but more powerful motors is the only way it can be Improved upon, this is why for now I think gear drive is the way forward
I like this idea of the motors at the same axis of the wheels, however the only problem I see si the proximity of the motors to the ground and the potential damage they will suffer in time, if you have experience skateboarding for a while you will know that even normal trucks get hammered hard by simply skating, imaging the amount of damage the motors in this case will get with regular use, other than that I think will be better in wheel drives just for protection of the hardware. I own a GTR bamboo for 2 years the trucks are completly scratched and worn from riding, these trucks are way higher from the ground than the motors in this video, hence my concern. cheers
No idea at the moment mate. It's hard to tell. I would edge on the side of possibly not as I have head about some axles snapping and stretching. Time will tell as always
£285 for the motors?! I really want a direct drive system but they're all so expensive! The cheapest I can find is the revel kit that costs £450. Do you know of any direct drive boards?
The link for the direct drives on esk8 to ebay [ www.ebay.com/itm/383029547817 ] appears not valid anymore? Do you think I could replace the hub motors on the Backfire Mini (see www.indiegogo.com/projects/backfire-mini-carbon-fiber-long-range-e-skateboard/x/9548054#/) with these motors and control them with 2 Trampa VESCs (www.trampaboards.com/vesc-6-plus-benjamin-vedder-electronic-speed-controller-p-26762.html) in the above mentioned board?

Thanks Mark! Yeah that dude is chilling man, great guy! Was over a year since we seen each other - and hes still there doing his thing! Crazy!

I totally agree mate, I was not convinced

What is the problem of wider contact patch? Less range?
Yes they are so wide they feel weird to me! Not a fan!

I wanna see 4x4 direct drive with the tires you have on yours. 👍
5:33 This part scared me... Gravel and sand doesn't mess around!
Yeah man you have to be careful with that stuff!
What monitoring app did you use? Thanks
Looks awesome👍 Building my own at the moment.
Oh really? Amazing! Direct drive is so cool man you are going to love it
@@LeeWright late reply😂
I'm making a full carbon deck in school and using 4wd direct drive and 120mm wheels. Should be fairly capable 👍
What's the difference between hub and direct drive other than where the motor is placed, affecting wheel choice?
Essentially yeah its where the motor is placed. With direct drive you get way more cushion from the wheels as there is much more urethane
Try dkt on a dropdown-through. Mo should know narrow wheels give less grip. I say widen the tb 110's. Like the channel guys. Stay cool brothers. Aloha from hawaii.
Hey man! Must have missed this comment. Aloha brother, unfortunatley mo is out of action for the foreseeable future

I envy to see you have a good time with your friends for the same do for fun :) And nice work.
Yeah for me this hobby is all about spending time with your friends, I have such a good laugh with Mo I love it! Thanks man
did he get the speed wobbles with the dual kingpin trucks yet??
Not sure bro... hes had a few wobbles on that now! He does have a dodgy hip these days mind
Cool video Lee the sanding bit was class. How's the direct drive do up hills?
Yeah Mo makes me laugh, it's fine up the hills mate no probs - it surprised me

revel kit has direct drive on paris trucks
@@BadC0 Very true. I haven't seen just the trucks yet though. only a matter of time.
i guess you can just let away the middle kingpin and then you have normal trucks, but i don't know if the motor still fits afterwards
Anyone know the deck shown in the video?
I think it’s a db longboards... I’ll ask Mo for you
Whats the difference between 'Gear Drive' and 'Belt Drive'?
I'll make a video and show you dude
bout time. ;) now lets get on to the Carv Labs kit!
Yeah it's all good and Mo is a happy boy! I'll have to check carve labs out
The setup looks great! What battery and ESC are you using? Building one myself, just interested in what specs to expect.
Cheers!
Hello mate. Mo is using two focbox VESC's and a 10S6P 25R battery. Specs are good, 35 miles of range and over 30 mph!
The motors are real low to the ground. Do they not hit things when riding.
They do a little, one disadvantage of direct drive
Lee Wright how do you think this will be improved in the future?

Yep totally valid concerns and I share them too. These motors are not for me, because of that very reason
@@LeeWright They should be compatible to 6" all terrain wheels so they are further away from the ground
Dude that thumbnail is sick
Thanks man!

You have a lot of boards in your workshop !
I know man, I will start churning them out in the next few weeks - Scott's board first!
glad your doing my board not Mo run the motors while sanding the look on his face when u seid that
Haha yeah mo is a legend mate! Haha cant wait to get home and get on your board mate
Elofty dd with tb wheels? Lol
Good point! Mo doesnt like to do things the normal way 😂
i dont prefer direct drive because rough road would break the motor
the guy just want;s to be alone
Definitely lol
