Awesome video! Used to do a lot of shore fishing in Auckland 30 yrs ago when I was a kid. Island bay, Birkenhead wharf, takapuna bch off the rocks. I'd make lures out of spoon handles. Never got anything on them though. Only with bait.
Where's your spot? I feel like I recognize the cliffs in the background on the right hand side of the bay. Thanks again for the video. Really love the attention to detail on the filming.

Thank you bro. A spoon handle is a great idea, some people may use the spoon, but the handle is more like a Jig.👌🏽I may actually give that a crack.
I’ve been trying the same areas you mention here, up to east coast bays as far as Wenderholme. I would typically bait fish too from the land, but I am a lure fisherman on the boat.
I enjoy casting small jigs up to 30g into the “wash” which made me think I could actually do this from the “shore”.
I tried my softbait gear but could not get the distance to hit the channels and holes, so the specific shore jigging rods have really changed the game. Am starting to adapt pendulum casting but it is scary 😂. I look forward to doing more of this very soon.
Thank you for taking the time to watch and comment. Appreciate it allot 🤙🏾

Kia ora bro, thanks for posting this video, subbed to the channel.
This is the type of content that is in short supply on UA-cam, high quality filming and a relatable fisherman.
There is also very few vids on light tackle lure fishing from the land in Aoteroa.
And for me the other buzz is seeing something targeted that is a change from Snapper and Kingfish.
Chur bruddah. Keep up the vids going.

Thanks brother I really appreciate the feedback. I thought the same with light tackle vids especially when we have so many channels and estuaries it is something that will begin to grow in NZ.

@@otklfnz Estuary/River to ocean fishing is quite specialized eh if you want to catch more than Kahawai, Mullet and Rays you have bring a specialist approach (those fullahs on big Angry Fish first showed that on NZ TV fishing the Mangroves for Giant Snapper up Parengarenga).
Must have been buzzy seeing the system working bro, using micro Jigs - reading about Trevally liking lures and actually mastering it are two different things.
Also catching something like a Snapper in an Estuary or River in Auckland is a whole other buzz (I see you mentioned Snapper have been caught in that River). A panny in a river is much more rewarding than a Big Snap from a boat.
Its cool to hear UA-camrs say in the intro that they are hitting their local spot, kinda gets you thinking about the old rule of fish your feet and it proves that when you fish somewhere regularly you can learn the how the fish behave, which is the Kungfu of fishing hey bro.

@@tunite12 gee you talk my language brother. You’re on the money. A 30gm jig in say 5mtrs deepest in that channel the fall time is very quick, so I move the jig constantly like a wounded bait. And boom. I had fished there with bait and just constant bites by jacmacs etc very tricky. Like you say quite specific.
I knew a small jig would get away from those pickers and let the healthy predators take a knib, which friggin happened on my first session.
I was using a hook with a feather or flasher on aswell which made me think maybe the kahawai are biting that fly and not the actual jig. So switched it out to a plain assist hook and boom. Big trev.
Tells me they feeding on the bait in there and it’s just a matter of time now for a big red snaps 🤞🏽 you’ll be suprised whats lurking 👌🏽

Ain't this a beautiful spot just a few minutes drive from the CBD, and a bit like turning the clock back a couple of decades. It's a great walk out there under the trees. The boat club jetty is a good spot for bait with a cast net or just jigging, and I've had some good snapper off there as well. The club don't seem to mind me parking near the ramp on weeknights. Something big busted me last time I was up there, stingray probably. We've tried lures, soft plastics, cut baits, but live baits seem to go best. I dragged a lot of driftwood out of that gut but I expect there will be more by the time I get there next. I've seen guys in waders up to their chests casting off that shell bank near 2km out from where you were. I don't often go out even as far as you did, usually I just hook left at the first row of macrocarpa, about 2 minutes from the car. Follow the trees out to the little point there opposite the motor camp. A muddy shell bank in front of you, easy to clear away any rocks and driftwood, 20 m to the channel, and it's narrow there. Good shade under the trees. We have stayed the night there and it's good to have a clear line of sight to the carpark, and not far to nip back for gear or cook up a feed in the reserve :)

Beautiful place mate. Trees still come through after every storm 😂. Theres actually a new bridge getting built across the river close to the club, so we’re getting a bit of silt at the moment. Hopefully they catch all the rubbish from the “run-off” once the road is open.🫣
I have seen Orca up here chasing stingray into the shallow, like you say, it’s like turning the clock back a little.👌🏽

This is the start of my shore jigging addiction and will share as much as I can. I do allot of slow pitch jigging on the boat. When I heard of shore jigging I knew this would work with my 20-30gm slow pitch jigs that I already owned. What I am trying to achieve with the jig is to act as a dying baitfish, small bursts and let it fall as if it is half dead. The trevs seems to smash it after its fallen and lays on the sand dead. Please keep asking questions, it will help me bring better videos.🙏🏾

    • @otklfnz
      @otklfnz 11 місяців тому +1

I have a couple videos on my channel about “SLJ - superlight jigging” from the boat. I am basically doing this exact thing but from the shore. The jig must constantly move and we cast in every direction covering allot of ground quickly. Cast and wind back “spinning” will likely catch kahawai, I am trying to target everything else by pitch and fall. Shore jigs typically have a treble on the tail for fast retrieve for tuna, kahawai, even kingfish. At this stage I am focussed on pitch and fall method so only have assist hook on the head of the jig.
