I've found my way to this video after hearing Metallica's live cover of this Masterpiece of a song by Elton John. To be clear. I'm a fan of Metallica, but this is by far a better live cover of this amazing song. Not to mention, the members of Dream Theater (in this configuration of the band) were so young. That being said: This song was such a great era for Elton John.
Mike Portnoy really makes a difference.
Lars Ulrich is a god of metal, but his drumming lacks of accuracy and chops. This song needs both those things

Brilliant - DT were young here and just proving themselves - its not perfect (which sadly they became - everything WAS too perfect!) - but I love how different and rocked up it is when you listen to Elton Johns versions

Since everyone singing all the praises for the others (rightfully so), just wanted to say that seeing Derek here is so sad. I get why they punted him for Jordan (a much better fit) but he was the man when I discovered DT in 95 and the first I saw live with them in 98. Glad he seems to still be doing okay.

This is an amazing cover but check out the new Metallica version - an heavier cover (not for everyone). Two great covers and I hate to say it - I'd rather listen to the covers the original.
Why is the camera on Mike Portnoy during the section that starts at 3:55, when Derek Sherinian should be front and center? Great video, but let's give credit where it's due. Just saying, folks. :)

I feel like you've overdubbed the album track on the live video.
Edit: yeah the vocal track phases in and out of sync with the video. Sometimes it's running fast, sometimes it's slow with his mouth movements.

Well, I can see here the vocalist is also role playing as a bit of a conductor to the rest of the band as well. And, I believe his vocals sound true.

This is ridiculous, Dude. It’s the standard Studio version. What’s the point? Yes, it’s one of the best covers ever but sync with the actual Live version.

And, since you asked - pub bands all over the world can play this note for note, that's not a challenge.

As both a Metallica and Dream Theater fan I can say they both have their own unique spin on the song I personally prefer the Metallica version but this is great too

Love both bands as well. Metallica version is more unique I think and the setting was just epic. Def my fav. Props to both bands though.
