Very helpful! Would you say the 1st gens are more reliable than the newer ones? I just got a 97 Avalon, I just hit 60K.
Original engine, original transmission on my 96 Avalon and still running strong at 598K miles. However have had a leaky transmission for a while now, probably the seals. Doing most repairs myself because of these videos but not yet prepared to dismantle transmission to replace the leaky seals. Love these cars. Can’t beat the V6 with great mpg and roomy leg room in back seat for my 6’ 5” friends! 🤙🏼
+Gymbo Ah Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
I have a 96 too
I hope mine lasts that long
Only got 177k kilometers on mine rn
Is she still running?
Just bought a 95 Avalon with 372000 miles on it and it still drives great
Lol same I just got a 99 w/ almost 300k
I just bought a 97 with 270,000 miles on it for $800 , runs pretty good just struts are worn out, I get code P0401 , need to fix it to pass smog but tbh I don’t even want to fix it, just run it til I can’t anymore
Thinking about paying 3000 plus ammo for a 95 with 140k
@@KeemvsKeem do you still have it ??
These cars are straight bulletproof.
+Jann Santiago Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
for a while, then the repair bill is, later on. I just wished CAR SHIELD woulda come along about 10,000 miles ago..lol
I have one of those Avalon's with 800,000 miles on it that's right they are bulletproof just keep up with the maintenance people that you will be okay
When the Avalon made its debut in 1995, I was attempting to place folks in them, as they drove away from the dealership. I attended the ride-n-drive in Knoxville where they would throw ya the keys and point ya toward this big parking lot. The car was very responsive in all areas, especially steering, you can make a u-turn in 38 ft. The quick responsiveness of the steering wheel along with the giddy-up the 3.0 Litre V6 motor had were the first features I noticed. Hint: the 1995 Avalon has an exposed radio antenna, that`s the only year they had them, they were in the back window in my day..in the last century. just some automobile trivial trivia that you can bet on...lol
Thanks
I have a 95 with 315,000 miles still runs strong doesn't burn oil but it leaks it lol very slowly. Most impressive & reliable car I've had
Do a video on knock sensors, I have a 98 avalon, code says knock sensor, thanks
Glad to hear that, I have a '97 that just passed 250k, and I was wondering how much further I can push it.
@@danielnugent7046 it will last longer than you~
Good video, but the EGR should have been the first problem. That is the one flaw of the design. Two other minor flaws are that the car eats rear struts and rear (the rear one one the rear axle) control arms. My 1996 has 421K miles and is still on its original ignition coils and wires (I've tested them--within specs.). I think the first generation Toyota Avalon is the best passenger car for gas mileage, size/comfort, and durability/repairability.
Nice😎
Is she still running?
Just got myself a '98 w/ 69k, garaged all her life. This should come in handy soon enough. Thanks!!
Thank you!!! 🔥🔥 This is really helpful been waiting for videos on the first generation Avalon
Thanks everybody, damn? I cannot believe I had some info. that actually helped or educated another human being? I`m rattled! lol I`m all shook up. Anyway my 1998 Avalon has 159,000 on it currently, my doors are filled with water because of this plastic from the factory, ya have to slice em open to let the rain out. Just had to put a new radiator in it, complete brakes all the way around, except the ABS, that will probably never be repaired. Changed oil, filters, new battery. I hope you are adding this up in your head? New hoses, obviously...are ya ready?? 1700.00 bucks, 110.00 dollars an hour for labor. If you have any questions about any Toyota vehicle from 1988 to 1998 I can help, mostly with features and performance stats than anything technical.
Here are a few Toyota trivial facts from TN, not sure elsewhere...the 10th digit of your VIN number tells you what year it is..like a 1994 is an R I believe?.Airbags started 1993, passenger also 1994, in 1989 Toyota trucks went to a seamless body, no more rust issues. 1993 is the year the Camry went to new body style, 1995 was first year for Avalon, only year for exposed antenna. Between 1993 and 1998 Americans bought 900,000 Camrys and 900,000 Accords per year. The Avalon has never had a fold over seat, the Corolla always has. 93 -98 Corollas had either a 1.6 or a 1.8 litre motor, the DX had the 1.8, Camry? 4 cylinder but the 6 cylinder was a 3.0 Litre. 1994 is the year that they put the cargo light up high on the 4x4 pickup trucks, on top almost, ugh, how we cringed when we saw that baby, didnt seem to bother the consumer? Hope I hit on something you wondered about.
I have a 98 avalon, with 238,000 great car, I replaced all your normal wear items. I now have knock sensor code, and looks like it will be a little pricy to fix, issue here in TN is, you can't get a tag with emmission or check engine light on. And my gas milage really socks. I've replaced ignition coils as well as spark plugs, anyone got any ideas on why my gas milage is so bad?
@@elvis2014 are you familiar at all with Honda’s from 80s/90s ? I love talking to old school mechanics and learning all the tricks of the trade.
I loved my Avalon, was a super nice car. Got it to go about 135 mph and was super smooth everywhere else.
LOL
i have a 1997 Toyota Avalon with 225,000 miles and it runs great, pick up is A1 never had a problem no rattles its great put american cars to shame
Me too, mines a 98, but it's pushen 300,000 and it runs amazing. I've had to replace a couple things here and there and let my son's dad install a stereo system in it for me,which caused a couple funny issues, but easily resolved. This car has been my life saver, it's started for me when everyone else's wouldn't. Its made it through snow ice,120 degree summers..granted I do have a better idea about car maintenance than your avg bear, but still, very few issues all these years. And I have to comment on it's dang pick up, now my first car was an 81 El Camino with a 350 & ya I'ma gear head, rebuilly my first engine when I was 16, I know pick up, and I have to say this little Toyota and it's straight 6 has a very nice pick up. I was quite relieved first time I actually had to gun it to get out of a bad situations on the road& away from an ignorant driver, the "no delay" probably saved mine & my kids life. If it hadn't had that ability, idk if my son and I would be here today. I vouch big for this car, regardless of it not being American made. I'm a Chevy girl tho, thats what I'm used to, good ol classics Chevy's.. and this daily driver Toyota, Avalon has saved me money that's been able to go into my Chevy, lol.
In all fairness the Avalon was and still is manufactured in Kentucky right here in America.
@@ElohiSilverEarthVentures mines a 97
I'm on my 2nd 1999 Toyota Avalon, the only reason I had to get rid of my first '99 was because some doofus failed to stop behind me when I was yielding to make a right turn. Rear ended me and the trunk never closed right after that. My second one now has over 276K on it. Starts every time. Can't say the same for the newer cars these days.
You could always use it for parts. Mine is also a 98
@@deanlollis9177 I sold the old one in still excellent running condition for $1400. Bought my second one for $1600. Seemed like a good deal to me
Got a 99 too. I love her. Been in my family for 20 years. Dad got it for mom on their 30th anniversary. Shes whining so I'm here to get her happy again so she can keep going...205K miles and a lifetime of memories
I have a 98 Avalon with 123k miles. Accidentally hit 125mph un the highway. Still had pick up to go faster. Runs so nice.
Had the 99' for over 4 years, never had any one of these 3 issues. Only issues I had was the starter, rear pass caliper, and rear cat converter. Solid car and good power, but just got tired of buying UHP tires every 1.5 yrs.
i've had an issue that caused 3 symptoms simultaneously. the speedometer stopped working, the odometer display went blank, and the transmission hesitated. especially if my car was sitting out in the sun all day. found out all i had to do was replace the ceramic resonator behind the speedometer. fixed all my issues :) great car!
Damn J, You are the man, Thank You, ceramic resonator? Never heard of that? I would have guessed that to be a fancy name.. for a toilet seat. lol
I had the same issue, I replaced the speed sensor, I think it fixed the issue, however I'd like more detail on the ceramic connector you are talking about. Location?
Just in case my odometer goes back out, at first I thought it was heat, then I found out it wasn't, does it in winter too.
Wow! Thank you for the video you're wealth of knowledge. I like how you really know how to trouble shoot and dissect these issues i appreciate you👌
My uncle and aunt had an issue with their 1995, 97, and 99. They wouldn't break down, and only had to replace them if they got totaled in a crash. He just had to give up his last remaining 98 Avalon as he can't drive anymore. His 1995 Avalon had over 350,000 miles. His son played around with a drill and was able to roll it back to 150,000 miles. At almost 80, they get around with a single 2010 Camry.
+Midwestkid Thanks for the feedback!

Hi, I have a 2002 Toyota Avalon and it's pushing out coolant. Bubbles we're coming out once I open the radiator cap. Head gasket and block test turned out to be negative. Purged the cooling system thoroughly of air, by the big funnel kit, changed thermostat, radiator, radiator cap, radiator upper hose, all Toyota original parts. I hear a gurgling sound when I stop and then start. No check engine light. No overheating issues, runs normal and smoothly. Got 2,25,000 miles on the Odo. How to solve the pushing out of coolant even during short drives. Kindly advise. Thanks
Random question... At about 6:53-6:54 in the video, there is a hose that is almost directly in front of your middle and ring fingers. The hose appears to be disconnected and near where the engine air filter compartment is. I am asking because I looked under the hood of a 99 Avalon today and there was a hose (I believe it might be the same one) and a portion of the engine air filter compartment that matched that hose, but they were *not* connected. I am trying to figure out why they would not be connected, what they are, and why in the video, what looks to be the same hose is not connected. Thank you for any insights!
Just acquired a fixer up 98 avalon.... was told she needs a tune up and oil change.... already has 260k on her and started right up after sitting for 3mo.... glad to hear with some loving she should hold up a lot longer.
Very useful video. Just bought a 97 xls with 290k miles and check engine light occurred. Same egr value, should I just ask mechanic to replace it or do it myself?
Using Avalon 2000, the car 4 doors always opened on it own when locked on remote, same on manual. I need your assistance
i have a 95 and i just saw my temp gauge go up today (its 80 outside) i checked my fans and both working and didnt see any leaks could it be a faulty thermostat? i love my avalon 237000 miles and engine is strong
Check coolant level, thermostat and also make sure there are no bubbles in the cooling system. If all checks out, I would suspect the radiator, especially if it still has the original !
I like his energy.
Had that EGR issue on my 98 a while back. Think it was stuck open because the engine would really chug at idle. Worse when the weather was hot. Hit the top of the valve with a mallet a couple times and it's been gone for over a year lol
Have a 98 exactly like the one featured in this video. Had to replace the EVAP canister along with the EGR valve due to contamination in the canister. Great car though, I really shouldn't complain.
How much did you pay for that?
Thanks for this video. Really helpful. I have a Toyota Highlander 2001 model with 150000km on the dash. When reversing on a flat surface, it really has no issues but when reversing on an incline like 30 degrees or sometimes even less, the gear seem to slip as it struggles back and forth. I changed the gearbox fluid but didn't help. What could be the problem? Thanks.
Did you let the guys flush the fluid?
I do not know if your vehicle has a hydrostatic transmission or not? My 2010 Lexus RX350 has one and on any type of incline it does that, feels like I`m driving an old four-speed muscle car with the clutch engaged? lol

Good video short and to the point. My 1998 Toyota Avalon knock- sensor code. Check engine light comes on and won't pass smog check. In California strict about emissions. Knock sensors located underneath top of engine ( plenum). Need take top of engine to get at. Also had issues with struts and control arms. Repairing it is still cheaper than buying a new car. I like my Avalon ! It's a flagship car for Toyota. However they're discontinuing this 4-door roomy sedan. People are buying SUV's. Another complaint is the rear door handles (inside) mechanism have broken from people tugging too hard. Has a cheap plastic pivot point that breaks. Like I said, I love my Toyota Avalon !.
You kind a need to mention the problem about the ignition sticking in the ACC position and not being able to turn over. Apparently, it’s a very common thing and it just happened in my car.
My 1997 had a new battery put in. Now it don't start. It is something to do with the security system. Please help. 🙏
I wish I had this video sooner, could have saved some money. I have a 1998 and have had all of those issues except the transmission. Mine is on its last legs now; 1500rpm idle (throttlebody related) and fails to turn over when cold (no clue, not battery).
How many miles ? Sounds like an easy fix.
Same Toyota you're showing and I have check engine light on and it won't start can you help me
I have a 98 Toyota Avalon xls and I just replaced the water pump and timing chain and I'm having problems with overheating. What can I do to make this problem go away
Great info here, would you mind making a video breaking down the entire heating system of the car? My heats gone out at the worst time and only blows cold air. It blows out with low , medium and high so I guess it isn’t the resistor I’ve pulled out the heater blower motor and it works fine. The engine doesn’t seem to overheat or at least the dash reads normal. I’m not sure if it’s the thermostat I’m trying to learn more to see if I should pull that out and replace it. The car runs absolutely amazing but this 20 degree Maryland weather is unforgiving and would like to fix myself and save as much money as possible. Thanks anyway brother
My 97 (with auto heat/cooling) had to replace the air mix servomotor. On the left side of heater controls and very difficult to get out and in.
I’m going out to buy a 99 with 190k miles, $1700. This will help when I’m checking it out
Its a good car i got one
How is the car so far?
I just bought 1 for 3,000 with 170,000 miles here in L.A and I'm loving it.
Just bought one for $800! 1997 Avalon xls bucket seats not the bench, 270k miles and it needs the egr valve to pass smog, think I did good guys? How much were your egr valve repairs?
Definitely I bet she still running strong
greeting friend and thanks for the video I have an avalon 2000 and it has a tremendous fault but the fault is not always when it fails me and I am running it if I hit the accelerator suddenly the fault goes away but when I remove it it fails again yes I go to 30 miles it fails but when I accelerate it to get to 50 miles fast and it runs well I changed all the spark plugs, the coils, the flow sensor, the injectors I cleaned one of them is new one of the VVT sensors is also new and the error continues, maybe it runs fine for a week or two and then the error returns
Just picked up a '98 XLS for my niece's first car. 129k miles, one owner. Needed a lot of cosmetic refreshing but mechanically well cared for. Other than needing fluid replacements and of course the valve covers leak, this car runs great! If she doesn't wreck it, I'm sure it will last her as long as she wants to own it. The 300k+ owners give me hope.
I have a question my toyota avalon xls manifold is turning cherry red my engine light is on and sending a code for a knock sensor could this cause this problem please help

1998 Toyota Avalon XLS 119,000 miles. 2019 replaced O2 sensor. Again Engine light came on.[ Had an issue repaired in Jan. 2021, which was a problem with the computer]. Now Jul. 2021, again Engine light came on. Mechanic says it's a bad computer w/o checking under the hood. What else could it b?
. Car has some dents, trying to determine to fix or get a replacement car.
Sounds like to me you may need a different mechanic, especially if he's not checking under the hood and is just reading off his scan tool.
I’ve gotta 95 with 42k miles I. It😎
Nice, I got my 99 at 60k 6 years ago. It's at 96k now. People have offered to buy it but i'm not selling my baby. Runs great, better than most cars.
Tengo un Toyota Avalon 1998 y se calienta el motor, cuales puedes ser las posibles causas?
Ya lo arreglaste?
I wish I had this video sooner! You just saved me so much money and time, thank you!
my 99 avalon has issues with the traction control and the cats is that something worth fixing?
Toyotas will disable the traction control whenever certain faults pop up that turn on the check engine light, so keep that in mind. As long as your car is running good and if your state doesn't do inspections, it'll probably be fine so long as the cat(s) aren't clogged up which can restrict engine performance.
Thanks for the info, looking at 1999 Avalon with 45000 clean ??? Is it worth 5,000
I enjoyed the through explanation with no B.S.
I just bought a 1996 Avalon HLS with 107k miles. Got a PO401 insufficient egr. Replaced the modulator. Cheapest and easiest. After a week, got a PO402 excessive egr. Stuck valve? Engine runs well. not rough, decent acceleration. I'm not a mechanic, but have done simple jobs on cars. Is removing and cleaning egr doable by me? Or should bring to shop
simple. 10mm socket I believe.
Be sure the EGR itself is able to cut off the exhaust flow as if it's sticking, it'll cause issues and set off that code. Simply apply vacuum to the EGR valve and see if it causes the engine to stumble or not at idle. If doing that doesn't change the engine's idle performance right away or not at all, it may be sticking/stuck. If it seems to be fine, then verify the EGR solenoid is switching vacuum off and on properly, as often they can go bad, too, and only buy the Toyota oem part, aftermarket ones can either not work properly, or fail after a short time.
What makes you smell fumes inside the car from the vents? I have a 96 Toyota Avalon an I'm smelling exhaust fumes from my vents
Mines an ‘04 with 190k, and it stopped shifting or changing gears after driving 5 minutes. Is it RIP?
The problem is not the whole transmission , solenoids 3 x $50 , no problema with this car at all
Ever changed the tranny fluid ?

I know another common problem with the 1mzfe is the pcv valve getting clogged and causing oil consumption and misfiring. cheap easy fix
My car has the 1mzfe engine and it feels like it's jerking sometime when i let go of the brake and step on the gas. Could that be a possile dirty pvc valve ?
