Thank you!! For me 'The Rite of Spring' is one of those pieces that's just endless fun to look at from every possible angle. It even sounds great over the phone. Composers, arrangers and orchestrators will get a lot out of this video. Both you guys are rock-solid - a joy to watch
Thank you for uploading this, it's very interesting to watch and you also hear more of the detail in the brass than from the usual perspective and also how all the perc+timp parts complete each other at 13:03 in the sacrificial dance - great stuff!
Excuse me. Hello Victor. Congratulations. I'm a bassoon player and I've been studying The Rite of Spring by Stravinsky. Extremely difficult. (Score) Excellent performance. Timpani. My best regards from BRZ🇧🇷 See you. Thank you so much. Success!!
Always a great time being behind the horns! (Suffering from hearing loss in my right ear as a horn player) you and the other timpinast did an amazing job
Oh how I would have loved to play this in my days as a timpanist in school and university. Sadly the most advanced piece I ever got to play in was Dvorak's 9th. That Scherzo is loads of fun though, having to count against the beat the entire time. What I find especially interesting about this video is that one actually realizes that the timpani part of Sacre is so big that it takes up half of the entire playing time of the piece.

Très intéressant ! Merci beaucoup. Entendre l'orchestre depuis le pupitre des timbales est vraiment très instructif. On aimerait avoir la même chose depuis chaque pupitre de l'orchestre.
@@jameer8225 when I first found the video of the ballet and then subsequent performances of the chosen one my father and I would watch the dancers to see if they were continually hitting the timpani which does not stay regular as you know. We deduced that Pietragalla and Margarita Simonova killed
Great video! Took me back some 45 years when I played timp and percussion in college/Grad school. Kudos on your French rolls... very reminiscent of the great Vic Firth!
Congrats, this is really great ! And having the sound from the very core of the orchestra makes such a difference, as if I was there playing one of the timp parts too... thanks :)
Obviously a mistake was made ... it was supposed to be a recording of the horn section (judging by the mic placement) and someone unknowingly knocked the camera and moved it to the tympani. LMAO!
5:26 is start of sacrificial dance for anyone out there looking. I have an audition piece and this would’ve helped hahaha 14:10 is page turn to 186 for timpani part
Question. How does this work? I would think most orchestras can't afford to hire two timpanists as I suspect pieces requiring two are rare. If I am right how do you get a second one? Borrow from anther orchestra? I am truly curious.
At the end of the day, timpanists are just percussionists. That said, an orchestra's principal timpanist usually only ever plays the timpani. But if a piece requires a second (or third timpanist) another musician from the percussion section will sub in. Most orchestras have at least 4-5 percussionists, so it isn't a big deal.
This is epic. Can someone timestamp where Danse Sacral starts? Need to see someone playing the Orchestral Extract (G8 Trinity). Looks like 14:19. From the book Ochester (sic) Probespiel Test Pieces for Orchestral Auditions. Edit - subscribed!
And I thought I was the only one who noticed it. Then again I have no two recorcings of this (and I have way too many) where there is a musical consensus on how they should be played. Every conductor seems to have a different idea. My personal favourite solution is that in the Seji Ozawa recording.
@@victorpradillostimpani1917 I love conductor suggestions, but unfortunately I tend to forget about them during the concerts, especially the unfortunate ones like this.
This orchestra is so not together. Strings off tempo French horns cracking notes woodwinds are so off pitch it’s not even funny, and intonation is treacherous! Timpani players are killing it. Thank god!
For all the haters.....learn some French horn and pull off le sacre yourself. Good luck! I think this is a wonderful video. Calm cool and collected from behind 😎
@@princepsangelusmors horns sound very different from in front of the orchestra. When you get sound directly from their bells it doesn’t resonate the same way
Look Victor , I am an experienced player, believe me that if you play too close to the edge than the skin won’t resonate well and the sound will be pale as it is on this recording . but of course you can play as you want , these are just kind suggestions

They were saving the lips for concert afterwards ;)

Once you get into it its not that hard
And very fun to play
Didn't realize the two sets only play together in the second part.
Also clear that the horns have not the easiest task in this work.

If you had to choose any recording of the Rite based on its principal timpanist performance which one would you choose?
Anything recorded by Torsten Schoenfeld with Berliner Staatskapelle is my reference
