timpani seriously like maybe the best instrument ever
Gotta love the 28 measure roll lmao
Love to watch these and hear the timpani parts in focus. (Also nice to have affirmation that the timpani parts I’m writing aren’t completely ludicrous.)
this 💀💀💀
Oh my, yes indeed! He’s such a talent percussionist!
Great playing!

Not sure the rhythm at 0:59 was correct. The sheet music shows it should be twice as fast, no? Also the 32nds didn’t sound like 32nds. Is this some timpani thing I don’t know about? I’d love to learn if it is
Yea, I did a double-take too, he continued playing eigths instead of sixteenths.
Hey people! Yes, that was actually intentional. Both things. There are two different versions of this part from different editions. I typically play the one that shows up in the sheet music in here, but the recording we chose from (I think) the Chicago Phil did the other one where you play 8th notes instead. I kindda like it though, makes it a little bit more epic… my thoughts though… and the 32nd part, even though it’s written like that, it’s usually played as straight roll to make it sound better at the little separation that the entire orchestra makes on those big “A-D”… overall there are many things that are usually done in parts like this that are not written but help with the drama that it’s meant to happen. Cheers!!
@@gr.percussion Cool! Thanks for sharing. In my youth symphony there are two different editions for Tchaikovsky 4 and so the recordings I watch sometimes have different rhythms than I’m looking at in my music :) now I know!
@@gr.percussion I looked at the critical edition of the score and the 16th notes one bar before K are the correct way to read this passage. Whatever other editions are out there are wrong.
❤💜🤎
What did you do in the bar before letter K? That's not what the parts says. You played 4 8th notes insted 8 16th notes.
Lovely. Can I ask you for a date?
Is there a reason why you play some notes differently?
E.g. at 0:40 first note at (A) as a piano.
At 1:00 1 bar before (K) eighth notes instead of sixteenth notes?
He play probably with old Breitkopf edition, and also adds his own dynamics
Peccato che non c'è l'attacco del secondo movimento
Das soll gut sein?
I am in no way musical nor a sound engineer so please forgive my stupidity and naivety: am I mishearing the timpani being slightly behind the pulse of the orchestral recording in places?
He’s certainly not playing as written!
