    thanks for this man, so helpful, am self taught, i develop my own techniques, now am trying to educate myself by learning how other people do it, i may or may not use them, but as they say, learn the rules so you can break them like an artist

    I use a similar method and had no idea it was historical! I dislike projectors as I find they can distort the drawings.

    Is there a video on how Bruegel applied paint though?

    Am i mistaken, or were the drawings sealed with hot rabbit skin glue? This seals off the ground from absorbing oils and keeps the ground white. I believe i got this from Eastlake years ago. In any event, i use this approach and it works quite well.

      Hello Jon: Thank you for commenting. The method you described is well documented by a lot of authors from the history of art. I have tried both methods and they both work fine, but I prefer to seal off with an oil imprimatura because it’s faster. Both methods seemed to have been employed by painters from this period. Best regards.

      1st layer, sizing/thin layer of animal glue
      2nd layer, ground composed of animal glue, chalk or gypsum, white pigment
      3rd layer, underdrawing
      4th layer, seal with tinted oil primer composed of drawing oil, chalk/gypsum, white pigment, maybe tinted
      5th layer, grisaille, a monochromatic values painting to look like a scultpure
      6th layer, thinned, medium-toned opaque paint of base colours and tones to establish values and base colours
      7th layer, true colours, layer upon layer of transparent glazes to build forms. Each layer makes the previous more vibrant
      Colourless ground glass may be added to decrease drying time and increase vibrancy

      @@susanb4816This is what I've been looking for.. thank-you all. I recently saw a video in Italian that reapplied the animal glue over the undertones. It almost felt like he was redoing the process.
      I wish there was a video on this, step by step.

    What modern day brands of ink would be like those Raphael used ?

    • @LuisBorreroVisualArtist
      @LuisBorreroVisualArtist  3 роки тому +2

      You can order Bistre ink from Kremer pigments or you can try any traditional Chinese carbon base ink. I prefer a very diluted ink, so the under drawing will not show through the paint layers. I have never try Higgins or any other modern ink. I did have a student of mine use a sharpie once, against my own advice with disastrous results, perhaps because of the solvents in the marker. His underdrawing with the Sharpie bled through his paint layers months after the painting was completed. You can always experiment. Let me know how it works out.

    Buongiorno, Luis seguo i tuoi video ma non in tutti c'è la traduzione in italiano purtroppo, io credo che sarebbe molto utile per tutti gli appassionati di pittura poter avere un tuo libro dove raccogli le ricette per imprimiture per i medium e tutto il sapere che sei riuscito a raccogliere in questi hanni sarebbe meraviglioso avere questo io ad esempio essendo italiano ho solo il libro di Cennino Cennini ma è un trattato incompleto. spero che tu possa raccogliere questo suggerimento utile a molti di noi dato che molta della tradizione pittorica si è persa e il lavoro che stai facendo è magnifico è andrebbe raccolto in uno o più volumi grazie.

    What's wrong with regular carbon paper you find in office depot stores?

    • @LuisBorreroVisualArtist
      @LuisBorreroVisualArtist  2 роки тому

      Hello Yoheff988: If the carbon paper has a bluish dye it can sometimes bleed through your paint layers. If you can purchase transfer paper that has graphite only then you don’t have to worry about this minor defect.
