Well, I'm almost finished with my sandals. I layered many, many more layers than I had originally planned. 5 of the first 20%
layer and 4-5 of the 50% , then 4-5 of the 75%. Each layer made them look better and better, I couldn't seem to stop. I set them under a little fan which helped them dry for a couple of hours or so between layers which was very helpful. Then also
let them sit overnight. I plan on letting this last coat dry for about 3 hours before I finish off with the Angelus Satin Finisher.
I am so pleased with finding and implementing your shared knowledge as now I have a pair of what looks like factory finished sandals. Not the ruined ones I would have had if I had put the 2-3 layers of thick straight paint I was planning to do.
I used all Angelus products. Deglazer, white leather paint and finisher. I used my art brushes and treated the entire procedue like an art project. I hope I don't mess them up with the Finisher application! :^D Thanks again! pb
I was looking for the same process of making leather whiter, I found this solution.
Try to use this process:
1# - Hydrogen Peroxide (200 Volumes) 100 ml per liter of water - Let the leather soak for 24 hours. (remove excess with water do not forget to wear gloves with this product)
2# - Sodium bicarbonate 7g per liter of water (more bicarbonate you use more stiffer the leather will become) (Sodium bicarbonate is the same used in cooking) - Soak from 40 minutes to 1 hour.
3# - After this process you will need to stretch the leather and let it dry in the shade.
The leather will become "whiter" thus guaranteeing better dyeing.
Ps. It is not to use this technique on the cut piece. Use on the material you are going to use to make a belt.

If I'm making a holster, do I want to punch for the stitching AFTER I paint it???
I always punch holes before any kind of coloring, whether it is staining or painting. this allows you to stain/paint/seal the holes prior to putting in hardware such as grommets or rivets. This helps maintain the seal on the leather and let it keep its water resistance as long as possible.
would lime-washing the leather help? I want to buy some cheap leather furniture and paint them white
I have never used a lime wash, so I don’t know.
Is a protective coating like sheene or leather balm w/atom wax necessary aftet the paint has dried?
Leather balm really won’t do anything, as the pain seals the leather and prevents absorption. I would use a leather sheen, as it will protect the paint from scratches and give it a glossier look
@@millerscraft i also looked into acrylic finish. That seems to look like it works too. Sheen seems to flake away even when fully dried on dye
One quick question if I were to emboss a design in the leather will using this method muddle up the clarity of the design, since there is so much use of water?

Is Isopropyl alcohol 99.99% able to replace 91% ?

It is! You are just looking for it to not leave the leather "wet" after the alcohol evaporates. Thank you for the question.
Hi there, got me some white leather ray-ban eyeglasses and the white leather is starting to discolor to gray. Do you think this method will work if I carefully paint the frame myself?
or I also found a white marker for leather on Amazon. not sure which one would work best. just needs minor touch ups to those fades or lifted areas
it is entirely possible it will work. For your application, I would use Angelus white leather paint (amzn.to/38ts0cu), as it is my new go to for consistent results and higher pigment count. Just follow the process laid out here and use a small brush

@@millerscraft Do you think I can skip the stripping part as the color underneath is a light gray almost like a dirty white and just go over it gently with the acrylic you suggested?
@@JoAnnWren yes, you can more than likely skip the stripping part, as the leather is pretty much raw there at that point.
Why not just use white multi surface acrylic paint or white paint mixed with textile medium?
Most are too thick to put on a piece of leather that will flex. It will begin to crack and release from leather
Will the suede side take the white similarly?
The suede side is pretty much a sponged. I would go with a 50/50 mix of paint and water. try that out on a small piece and see what you get.
My leather jacket is pilling off its skin...can I use this method to cover it with the same color??
This is mainly for veg tanned leather and most leather garments are made with chrome tan. For what you are experiencing, I would try either a angelus acrylic (amzn.to/31XS4DO )or even a shoe shine. Without seeing the damage or the jacket, I wouldn’t know.
My leather ottoman has a slick finish--will the alcohol pre-treatment dull it sufficiently so it can absorb the white paint?
This will work with veg tan leather, furniture and jackets are often made with chrome tan leather, and does not absorb stains, paint would sit on top, but may not bond well

Sorry, just saw this comment. It should, results may vary depending on the type, current finish, and current state of the boots.
I want to paint a face on a leather project, veg tanned leather. And I want to keep the leather showing and use just light coats of paint like what you did at first and add touches of color... But I'm afraid that as leather ages and darkens it will make the painting look different. Do you have any tips on that? Do I have to cover it all instead?

Nehal Yahia sadly, it is skin and will darken do to things like sunlight/uv. What you can try is to seal with a acrylic seal like Tandy’s satin or super sheen. I’d test on a scrap leather piece to test.

This is paint, and while you are more than capable of using a paint like this on it, it will not penetrate like it does on vegetable tan leather, The plastics they use in faux leather are not porous, and Chromium leather tanning seals the pores in the leather, not allowing for absorption.
I paint faux leather. Wipe down the faux leather with nail polish remover and let dry. Then add some nail polish remover to the acrylic paint and mix. Then you can paint on faux leather.
EV DE can this be regular acrylic paint ? Or will it have to be acrylic leather paint ? Also , what do you use to finish it ? How machine durable is it ?

Acrylic paints are pretty much the same, the better the quality, the better the paint. I use anjelus paints, but pretty much any acrylic will work in this application
I’m trying to dye a pinkish white leather bag. I have acetone whiped it and am trying the layering on some test spots. Please help I need this leather to be WHITE WHITE for a project. I can’t have this pink tint. HELP!
Will blowdrying help speed the drying process up?
It will. I would not use heat though, as that could affect the paint or shrink the leather
I bought a fairly expensive pair of Vionic sandals that are beige/tan leather but am dyeing them white today with your technique. I've watched the video 2x last night and 2x today and will prob listen to it again before I'm finished. I put the
first 20% coat on about 4p and plan on another one about 6p. Two more in the morning and then up the percenteage for more coats.
You are right, it will be a time consuming process but your belt example shows how worth it is for long lasting results.

I just made a white watch band and didn't like how it came out, I did water the white but not this much. Wish i would have watched this first lol.
thin layers and multiples will get you a solid color going.
I had a guy ask me for a white leather holster tonight, and I thank you for this information. How does this particular paint and technique work with slicking edges? Would it be better to bevel the edge and apply it like an edge paint after the leather is finished and stitched?

@@johnteaguefilm Nope. Guy asked about it, we settled on a quote, and then never paid. So I still haven’t had to mess with it. Road Agent Leather has a video where he used an airbrush to make a beautiful white and silver holster, so I will probably play around with a few scraps and try his airbrush technique with the white. It does look like he paints a few edges in that one.

I am using Tandy’s Cova color white on this, but Angelus white works even better

Dye is made for darkening leather, and cannot "lighten" leather. Fiebings had a "white dye" for awhile, but it was just paint suspended in an alcohol. it was awful.
what leather are you using? and will this method work on larger areas of leather? thanks
For belts, I use 8-9 Vegetable tan Leather. Chromium (upholstery leather) is resistant to anything penetrating it, so it would all sit on top of the leather instead of getting penetration. You could do this to a large section of leather, but you would need to be careful to apply even coats or you will have variation and streaking in your finished piece.

@@matthewwarren10 You could. it was would be a normal application with edge paint on the veg tan as it is almost a plastic you are applying on the edge.

Possible, but the leather is not porous on faux leather and the paint would sit on top of the material. I would try this on a small spot and see what happens
