I knew all of these were based on a true story with the exception of the few films that I'd never heard of. I also think listing "Silence of the Lambs" is a major stretch. Hannibal was based on several different real people, but the movie is total fiction. But, yeah, nothing here was shocking. "Heavenly Creatures," "Lorenzo's Oil," "Alive." I feel like everyone who has seen those films or at least heard of them knows that they really happened.
@@vladtepes97 Based on and based off mean the same thing. They are interchangeable. Sure on is preferable but that doesn't change anything. Fiction is made up so how could something be based off true events and yet still fiction

1. The silence of the lambs does not belong on this list. An author doing research doesn’t suddenly make it based on a true story 2. You said unfortunately the subject in Lorenzo’s oil died at the age of 30. Certainly any death is tragic, but given that he was expected to die by the age of six to eight, that still sounds like a rousing success.
I suspect than anyone who saw these back when they were in the theaters knew they were based on true stories. With the exception of Silence of the Lambs, which wasn’t.
But Lorenzo's oil worked. Lorenzo was supposed to die at age 5 and he lived to be 30. That's amazing! They started producing it as a treatment for ALD and still use it today in asymptomatic patients. It seemed to work better for some than for others and now there are more effective treatments for the condition, but what Lorenzo's parents did was incredible.
I'm glad the majority of people watching this did know most of these actually happened. But why is silence of the lamb here. Characters Inspired by real life people I feel is different then the plot of your movie being based on real life events
who DIDN'T know that these movies were based on true stories? Apart from SILENCE OF THE LAMBS, which you say here wasn't a specific source story and doesn't really belong here
A lot of these films do explain that they are based on true stories, and anyone who would be interested would then research to check validity. What gets me though is that the site discussing these films didn't do accurate research; "The Ghosts And The Darkness"? I'm certain Whatculture deliberately drop mispronunciations in their video, but to get a film ame wrong, on a film/TV channel, just plain absurd.
The dogs in the street knew Lorenzo's Oil was based on a true story - it was a major plank of it's marketing. The retiring professor in England even played himself! Saying that, I saw it when my son was a baby, and my OH and I were in bits!
We watched Lorenzo’s Oil in 9th grade biology, before our research projects on a rare genetic disease. I got Williams Syndrome. IIRC the treatment in the movie was something to do with feeding him lots of polyunsaturated fats, since the disease was a reduction in the mylin sheaths in his cranial nerves. Mylin was made of polyunsaturated lipids, or something like that.
Is this a video for millenials? All but 1 movie I knew about the back stories and half of them are losely based backstories. I'm 43 so is this video geared for teens? And these were huge blockbusters. Ghosts of Mississippi was shown in high school.
Gotta appreciate the film Ed Wood. 😎 I imagine some reference guides still (dis)honor Plan 9 From Outer Space as "the worst movie ever made." If all you do is watch it, though, you may not see why it stands out. The movie Ed Wood gets into how it was funded and why it was made. It's all about a kinda oblivious b movie director unexpectedly shooting the final footage of Bela Lugosi. Not even Eddie thinks he can do anything with it, until he notices that a chiropractor he knows kind of looks like Lugosi from the nose up...
I knew less than half of these movies were based on actual events. I knew about Goodfellas, but I'm half-Sicilian and may be related to some of those people. So maybe I am the target audience, and not the rest of you. Possibly you can relax; this video just wasn't for you.
The Ghost and the Darkness, Goodfellas, and Silence of the Lambs are amazing films that deserve high praise. It is an absolute shame that Val Kilmer got a razzie for worst supporting actor, as he was playing the film's protagonist.
I remember when all these films were released (except The Untold Story, which I hadn't heard of before) and all stated they were based on real events, so why say we didn't know this happened?
I think the only thing about this list I didn’t know was that Rob Reiner’s full name is Robert Norman Reiner. But he’ll always be Meathead to me. And boy is he a meathead!
Never heard of The Untold Story or the event it was based on, but all the rest I knew. Can't imagine how anyone didn't know as most were advertised as based on actual events. Except of course for The Silence of the Lambs, which only had some real people that inspired the characters, but that's true of pretty much all stories isn't it?
Ghost and the Darkness...not Ghosts and the Darkness. Also...saying Silence of the Lambs is "based on multiple serial killers" could be about most murder thrillers...🙄
There’s really people who watched these on the 90’s and didn’t know they’re based on true stories? I knew all of them. Maybe it’s you kids who weren’t born or old enough to watch them who did not know. Also it’s NOT Nick HOLT. It’s Nick Nolte ( Nole -Tay) And it’s just Ghost and the Darkness, not Ghosts plural.
Waste of time list. "Silence of the Lambs" was NOT based on true story. (Also, Buffalo Bill from SOTL was just as disturbing as Hannibal). Unless the GB release was different, it is called "The Ghost and the Darkness" (not "...Ghosts..."). And everything else was heavily marketed as "true stories".
Anyone with 1/16th of their total brain function knows these are all based in some part on true stories...y'all don't put any effort into your lists anymore ...

Most of these were widely advertised as based off a true story...
True but in the age of streaming there are going to be a lot of younger people who never saw the original ads and might not know
Yep
on. they were based ON true stories. if they were off true stories, they'd be fiction.

The Ghost and the Darkness! Amazing film, doesn't matter what anyone says. Loved it as a child and held up well upon adult re-watch. Underrated gem.

surprised that you did not mention that one of the girls in Heavenly Creature went on to become a best selling author. Anne Perry who died April 2023
Nick Holt? Really? 😅
Nick Holt ? Nick Nolte 👍🏻

There’s something about Lorenzo‘s oil being mentioned in the movie, “Paul” as a nod to the film creator
