I love the Brontes. Many a debate has happened over which book,Jane Eyre or Wuthering Heights, is the better one. I loved and enjoyed them both. But I am the oddball I guess as my favorite Bronte novel is The Tenant of Wildfell Hall. I am enjoying your discussions very much, and I have subscribed. I am visiting your early posts, and just want to assure you from the not too distant future you are doing really well.
I think Wuthering Heights is a more "realistic" or modern-day setting for the larger than life characters Emily used to create with her sister Anne . Their land of "Gondal" was populated by very Gothic-type characters and the kind of outsize passion that appears in Heathcliff and Catherine can seem out of place or unnatural in a rural Yorkshire setting.
On the contrary, I've seen and known many outsize passions exercised in Yorkshire doldrums in my time! I have no problem with larger than life characters, provided they aren't silly...
Have no idea it is about queen Victoria's period of reign. But it is awkward, not the book, it is about the sweater. The color of the sweater. Let's listen to this one and conclusionsl
Socially compelled reading of Victorian literature sounds like a great fun! Hooray! And hooray again, Dickens is on my reading list for this month. About modern day literature and its quality, well, it is a long discussion, but some authors are really fun to read and definitely do not lack quality. There are some modern classics as well, Nobel prize winners, so, it is not that bad. Maybe it is more difficult to find excellent ones, but it is achievable.
I mainly read Victorian plus 19th century Russian, French, and German literature from the same period. I also read some 20th and earlier literature. I'm keen on a couple of 21st century writers eg Jonathan Bate, but modern literature is dreck. I recently read some pleasant Japanese literature, but that is the exception. I read Wuthering Heights last year and am currently finishing Jane Eyre. I like the Bronte sisters, but prefer Jane Austen, but she is too early for Victober. I enjoyed your summary of Wuthering Heights.

I’m going to come bk and watch this once I’ve finished Wuthering Heights. I haven’t read it yet!
Why have I not heard of Victober? Also, I have Wuthering Heights and it is still on my shelf, sadly unread.
That description of the introduction 🤣🤣 hate too much academic dissection of lit
In which case I'd advise not to embark on a university scholarship if you haven't already!
