Wow, Apple M Chip is a beast. Thanks for sharing your experiment with us.
You're very welcome
Thanks for calling out the money grab by Universal Audio.
You got it!
Upgrade to native is under ten bucks if you alreay own both the UAD-2 (DSP) versions of Bus Compressor & Channel Strip actually, which is not that hard to stomach (though for almost all other UA plug-ins it is free). $49 if you only own one is admittedly steep.
Great video, although I have to add something. Enabling eq, comp, exp and mic line in (as you usually would, +- the mic line) will use a LOT more processing power. On my Macbook M3 Pro just inserting the plugin uses about 2% of my cpu in Live 12, enabling everything makes it jump to about 6%. But yeah, overall I think UAD DSP is useful in live mix scenarios, but a complete waste of money if you exclusive mix (not track) in the studio.
I was coming into the comments to make the same observation.
You are correct, but even still 17 instances vs over 100....the point is the same right?
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasyhey did you have DSP Load Lock enabled? I suspect so, but this context is essential to understanding the results.
I;believe that setting DSP Load Lock to “off” will give the most accurate like-for-like comparison, as native resources do not use Load Lock. Depending ion the amount of processing, this could open up more bandwidth for DSP.
@ I guess so, im not sure how uad calculates the dsp usage. does it jump up when you enable all the other modules running on dsp?
Ahhh. Dave i love your vibe you provide on your videos.....its like coming home 😉
Thanks my friend!!!
The main reason I’m keeping my Apollo X6 is for the real time recording. Mainly monitoring with autotune. Also there are a few plugins that are not native yet. The MT48 is the best interface I’ve used. If it had autotune I would drop apollo instantly.
Good point. The Appolo is a great iterface
Oh wow , very helpful video. Thank You!
You're welcome!
Reverbs and Virtual instruments are what really destroy CPU usage. Good video.

Yes, it is. We don't need any more DSP chips. Modern computers can handle these plugins with ease!

Your studio is looking good and you've dropped some pounds yourself. Nice job!
Thanks man!
nice video, but you had comp and eq disabled for this test. I have the same mac setup and I can get around 80 instances with everything enabled. Great video as usual.
Ok, 80 instances vs 17....the point is still the same.
Do you think the native sounds the same as using the accelerator?
To me it does.
Today I was doing a mix with the native, 65 channels, in an i5 windows computer, and it was just 20% of the cpu was used. I could add all other fx, revs, etc with no problem

I own the UAD SSL native plugiun, but I'm so used to the brainworx version that it's difficult to move to the UAD version
Totally understand. I own several versions of the SSL channel strips myself.
I own the UAD-2 (DSP) versions for both Channel Strip & Bus Compressor, and the upgrade to native was actually only $9.99. UA Support section confirms this is still the case, though it's $49 if you only own one of the plugins. Other than the Helios and Manley VariMu plug-ins (which can be upgraded to native for $2.99), all other native upgrades have been free so far.
I owned both as well and they told me is was $50. So maybe they changed the upgraded price.
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy hmmm that’s odd , the help section details the pricing, which is current and the same as the offer I got on launch
Very interesting. It seems they can do CPU and memory optimizations in the CPU that they cannot do on the DSP.
Thanks for watching!
The M2 chip is only a few years old, the SHARC chips used in UAD-2 are over 17 years old - vintage! Not a big surprise there is a massive performance gap
Very impressive... I think UA should shift from DSP to native version completely at the moment.
That's not a business for them why would you choose them for plugins like this one when the brand who designed this channel strips is making the plug in from the original design and guided by the engineer who made it and having better result because the don't have to do all the backward engineering to just start coding. And they also make audio interfaces that work better with the plug ins maybe you can get the similar performance with the newest UAD interface using the newer DSPs (obviously any Apple M chip is really hard to catch but get a bit close).
Thanks for sharing

Nice! What’s your opinion on UAD SSL E vs Softube Console 1 SSL E?
I really love console 1 workflow but overall sound of how eq and compression works in uad version is kinda more alive. Am I crazy? I hope not 😂
I am not a fan of the Softtube console 1 stuff.
How many during tracking keeping latency under 10ms? I put plugins in the input section and shape sound coming in. Thank you Dave.
No idea. you'll have to do that test
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy Gave it a try with a template I made for recording my drums. I armed twenty tracks and was able to insert nine instances of the UA SSL 4000E in the input section of studio one 7 before the performance meter pegged periodically in the red. Quantum 4848 set on 128 samples medium drop out protection 8.50ms latency. I built a pretty good PC a few years back based on specs from company's selling pro PCs for recording. Totally UN-scientific and not sure if the way I had my template set up made a difference ether way but it was fun and interesting. I wonder what your system would do? Thank you Dave for challenging me to think.
I use the Brainworx SSL 4K E but it's the same efficiency in Logic Pro. Amazing how many you can run. I would be ticked too if UAD charged me to use the Native version after I would have spent money on the plugin and hardware. I was late to the game so I only have native UAD (thank goodness).
Yeah I know! It's a bit of a shame.
What is your buffer set at?
256 I beleive
@ impressive
Have you tried other Daws with the same experiment? I wonder if the way studio one handles multiple cores has anything to do with it. Also, your computer CPU has multiple threads so if Studio one uses each thread correctly then that is why it has so much more power. All of the above, I guess. RAM helps too. I have 32 gigs for gaming but 16 is more than enough for audio. I tried to go to college for IT and even tried computer programming jobs.
I graduated in 2014 at 45 years old HAHAHAH better late than never! I got all A's man. Straight A's in 52 courses all online. I earned a Bachelors Degree in General Science in IT with a 4.0 GPA. But my major was more for programming and hardware. I went to 19 interviews with no success, so I got discouraged after my graduation. I had to go back to flooring! :( Didn't help but I did learn a TON on how CPUs work.
Now I build my own PCs so I understand the basics for sure. I have an intel i9 with 10 cores in my CPU with dual thread so that means it basically has 20 cores running at 5 ghz which is from a CPU AI Overclock. The Motherboard is a KEY piece of hardware for anything really. I built it right so I know it will handle a lot of these small plugins. It's just all the other stuff you have to watch out for.
Certain reverbs like the SSL Flex Verb man it uses crazy processing power. I was wondering last night if that is a design flaw. My CPU got overloaded when it never does so I had to turn the Flex Verb off. For this experiment the DSP only has what 4 cores or 8? I am not sure I don't do Universal Audio hardware... I have the PreSonus Quantum 2626 plus I just bought a RME 802 Fs. It was the best interface I could afford. Really has excellent drivers man for real! I do have some of the native stuff. I like how everything works BUT the Reverbs use a lot of processing power just like any other plugin.
I have not tried it with other DAW's but I would imagine the results would be similar
I think it’s the old coding with the DsP Version I guess it’s all about the planned obsolescence built to break/upgrade etc. Hmmm🧐
Thanks for watching
I paid $9.99 to get the upgrade so I wasn't really complaining too much. the only time UA pissed me off was when they wanted 50 bucks for the rotary plugin when I already owned their Waterfall B3
That's a good deal. I needed to pay $501 :(
On my windows, Studio One also, the Native version was giving a lot of pops and cracks. I loved the plugin but with all the cracks and pops, I had to move.
Use reaper
Nah....Studio one is the best!
@@HomeRecordingMadeEasy I mean I had to move to another SSL plugin. Please can you review the native version on Windows too
Mac Studio M2 Ultra I can use as many as my Heart desire at 64 samples in Protools Along With everything else I use for Mixing!!!!
That is amazing!!!
This is only if you are using Mac chips....
No, I have a windows machine with an i5 13600k, and I'm doing a mix with 65 ch. And it only uses 20% of the cpu.
Thanks for watching!
@eprotz
How? I've got a Windows i9 with 32 gigs RAM and I'm maxing out at about 60 channels of UAD SSL-e. Have you turned on EQ, Compression, Gates, and Transformer?
I think that happens not because UAD making a better version that is native that happens because you have and M2 Pro which happens to have a incredible performance try to do the same on an Intel PC with similar specs and it'll crash

My quad card is such a waste of money
Not really. There are many UAD plugins not yet native.
When I compare the dsp vs the native and try to null them - they don’t null. The dsp version has a bit more depth and articulation
Never the less, still wonderful they made a great sounding native version

Interesting...there are many UA-camrs who have done null test on the other UADxNative vs DSP version and they all nulled, completely silent. All the UAD native version vs Brainworx vs Plugin Alliance and DSP version all nulled.
So no idea. I'll have to test this sometime.

Fantastic!!!! Thanks for the support
Judging by the results of this video UA are complete freaking idiots!
Who the hell is going to buy the hardware based on the ability to run plugins outside your DAW if you can only run 15 or 16 of their plugins for $1000 when you can just buy the native plugins or Spark for SO much less and only be limited by your computer?
I understand that the interface is great, and it has great preamps and converters. But their desktop interfaces are only viable options at their price point (in my opinion...ymmv) because of the ability to offload plugin processing. In the past you could ONLY get their plugins if you had their hardware.
Now that they have chosen to provide native versions of the plugins they are undercutting themselves!!! That's crazy!!!
I guess you don't realize that about 80% of their plugins are Not native and you need the hardware to run them. It will be years and years before most of the plugins are native and I'll bet some of them will never be native.
