Sometimes Disney will move or change attractions or places in the parks. And just because they may be lost, doesn't mean they're forgotten. Join me today as we talk about some things in New Orleans Square that are no longer accessible, and remember the forgotten attractions in one of Disney's most well-themed lands anywhere in the world.

My favorite long-forgotten part of New Orleans Square wasn't a place, but a person, Ernie McLean, who died in 2012. He was a great musician, and the last person ever Walt Disney personally hired for the park. You used to see him sitting on a stool, day-after-day, playing to passersby. Cool guy, the kind of guy that made Disneyland what it was.

I think it's a disgrace that they took away the Court of Angels, such a beautiful place of Disneyland, away from people who can't afford to fork over hunks of cash.

The opening of New Orleans Square was so exciting because it was a whole new land opening up on the heels of "Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln," It's a Small World" and just ahead of "The Primeval World." It was such an exciting time at Disneyland. I'll never forget my first fritter and mint julep. I don't know how long it was before I found out that a "real" mint julep has alcohol in it. I used to love the One of a Kind Shop. You're right about the frustration over the Haunted Mansion sitting there looking so stately, yet a tiny bit creepy. All you could do was stand at the gate and wonder until August of 1969.

You also didn’t mention that one of the doors in that courtyard was practical and was for Cast Members Only.
The Hat Shop, Pieces of Eight ( Antiques ) were also great stores that had one of a kind merchandise.

I was really lucky and got invited to club 33 a month ago. The court of angels was really beautiful, and the inside of the club was too. WOW! I didn’t even go in the Dining Room (because we weren’t dressed to the dress code) but just going in the lounge was amazing. For those of you who haven’t been the lounge at club 33 was added a few years ago and has windows looking down on the French Market and the New Orleans Train Station. It’s hard to see it from the outside during the day, but if you go through New Orleans Square at night and look at the second floor of the building by the French market you can see it thru the windows. That place is crazy and I hope one day I can afford a membership (but that probably will never happen)

That is sad to hear about the Court of Angels. Years ago; when I niece as only 7 (she's 40 now), I took her picture on the winding staircase. I also meant to go back with a proper outfit matching the time period, and photograph her again, parasol in hand. It never happened; as I never had the money to make it happen. Now to learn is closed off to the public is very sad news indeed. I will never again get to relive that moment; as I have no idea what happened to that photo

Love all your videos! I miss the Court of Angels. It was one of my favorite places I could take a break from the crowds. The Disney gallery was also one of those quiet, air conditioned areas most people didn’t know about. The Gallery would play classic Disney soundtracks by violin. It also had an outdoor courtyard that had red Brick, white walls and windows, and a small white working fountain.

I remember playing the Pirates pinball game in that arcade many years ago. This was back when the Starcade still had the whole floor dedicated almost solely to pinball machines. Not long after that closed was when the Pirates machine disappeared from that shop. That and the Indiana Jones machine in the shop in Adventureland were the last pinball machines I remember seeing in the park, and even that one was taken out a few years ago.

Great piece, you pretty much nailed it. For some reason I thought you were going to go into more detail about the original shops ( Arribas Brothers, etc. ) or the originally intended wax museum walkthrough, but no big, you still nailed it. Looks like you were in C33 around the time of "Summer of Tiki". Congrats. You got some great footage from the balcony as well. No matter how many times I've been up the new C33 staircase I really do miss the original entry, and am personally very irked that the Courtyard of Angels was taken away from the public. I knew several parents who had easily agitated kids that needed that as a "calm down" space to deal with crowding and panic issues.

We use to hit up Disney Gallery every time. We were serious Disney art collectors so, whenever we found out Haunted Mansion concept art was there we were there. The space was so beautiful and, the displays of art equally. When we bought a lithograph they would take you into a small room and they would wear white gloves while they showed you a litho for you to inspect for imperfections before you buy.
If it’s all good they would have it sent to the front gate pick up booth.
There was a woman named Barbara who worked there that we knew very well and, when the Gallery was moved to DT Disney we ran into her. She so loved working the old Gallery and, was miserable working in the new space.
I know having new stuff at Disney is cool but, I think they made a HUGE mistake taking away the Gallery above pirates. I’ve met Marc Davis, Milt Kahl, Sam McKim, Ken Anderson all in that charming space. My Mansion art are my babies signed by each of these guys. I’m sure they’re worth a pretty penny by now but, I just love enjoying them for the beauty of what was to come or not come for the ride.

For many years - long before it became the Disney Gallery - the rooms above Pirates' entrance were used by park operations as offices for the Japanese team from Tokyo Disneyland. Here the company trained them in how to run a Disney theme park (even as the visiting Asians worked in various functions of Disneyland) and prepared to create the first international WED Enterprises project.

This is amazing! I grew up going to Disneyland from the 70s through the nineties, I had no idea the Disney Gallery and court of angels were remodelled!
I have never been happier than I was just wandering those back areas of NOS, the court and the area just outside the gallery had the most beautiful hydrangeas you’ve ever seen.
We used to watch Fantasmic from the balcony of the apartment, it was kind of a crappy view bc the trees blocked a lot of it, but if you went straight to the gallery when the park opened, you could sign up to sit in the tiny little VIP to watch. It was better than the Club 33 experience!

I remember "The Pirates Arcade Museum", my buddies and I always stopped to play some games there, after we rode "The Pirates of the Caribean". The same as we always stopped at the arcade on Main Street to play all the vintage games. My girlfriend, now wife of twenty-nine years, bought a "Steem Boat Wille" print at the "Disney Gallery" back in the eighties, we also frequented the "Court of Angels" it was a nice rest bit from the hustle and bustle of our favorite land "New Orleans Square". We are both from So. Cal and so much has changed in the place we so often visited as a couple and with our now two grown daughters, my wife and I miss the old Disneyland.

I loved the Disney gallery as a kid! I spent hours there looking at the art and picking out the print I’d get to buy each year. It was delightful!

Thanks for your video. The area between the Haunted Mansion exit and the NOS train station has always been a favorite place to sit and relax, with views that are unspoiled by commercialism and junk.

You constantly make videos about subjects I didn't even know I wanted info on. Then I become obsessed with the subject which leads me to all sorts of rabbit holes of mystery and fun.

Your video makes me wish they'd do a full reboot of Disneyland, rebuild every section to where it was the day that section opened, using modern technology, of course. Starting with the PeopleMover. Probably, not going to happen, is it?

Thank you for that nice trip through New Orleans Square. I do recall some of the items you pointed out like the staircase with the flowers. Being a kid I I would roll my eyes at that site and could not wait to go on to the next ride. I was fortunate that my parents took us to Disneyland most Summers when I was a kid. Yet I never heard of Fortune red or knew of the Pirates shooting gallery. One of my fond memories of the area was seeing two young black boys dancing and at the end pulling their hats off asking for tips. They were there just during the early years of New Orleans Square.

I loved the gallery. My favorite exhibit was when, well prior to the release of the movie, they hosted artwork and mock-up models of Pirates of the Caribbean : Curse of the Black Pearl. And one of the groups I always envied was the ones who managed to get on the gallery's balcony during Fantasmic.
It looked awesome. My friends and I also tended to walk around in the Court of Angels. Unfortunately we didn't understand the history at the time.

And I still want to stay in that dream suite… dreams can come true in Disneyland.
