Debbie's death is one of the most grotesque accidents in theme park history. Something about being crushed to death and screaming while everyone around her is distracted by cheerful music is just really awful.
The part where he said the attraction closed for cleaning made me feel slightly ill. I mean, it would have to be cleaned, but I guess that was a perspective of the incident I hadn’t thought about yet.
When I saw this title, I was wondering how you would handle Debbie's story, and I'm very pleased that the answer is, 'with class.' Not only in how you talk about it, but in how you fit it into the video, allowing people to skip and then not gooping it up with sad/scary music like it's a horror movie instead of the facts on how a real person met an extremely premature end.
Just wanted to thank you for being so respectful to Debbie Stone. Her death has been sensationalized so your video was a breath of fresh air. Otherwise, what a well-researched video! I wish I could have seen this attraction in person.
I suspect some of this might have included modifications to the attraction to make sure nobody else got hurt. I believe eventually they redid the walls so they'd give away if anyone got in their path. Warning lights were installed too.
My grandfather was actually in the theater at the time of debbies death (as a guest not a cast member) he heard her screaming but thought it was just a child from another theater. He was heartbroken when he found out what actually happened. He was so upset that he was in the building at the time of her death and couldn’t help her. As far as I know, he hasn’t gone back in that building since and I don’t blame him. Rest In Peace Debbie. :(

It's just plain wrong to say things like that about someone, and it hurts her family a lot. Anyway, this was a great surprise video, and I'm looking forward to the next one.
I agree. Imagine if some movie director decided to recreate that horrible death she had to go through. But it gives me questions though. What happened to her body after being crushed? Was her body compressed to become flat? It gives me a mystery as to what she looked like when she died. But nevertheless it gives me chills more then a monster horror flick.
People have it within their rights to boo and jeer at jokes they don't find funny. So frankly, it's only fair to do the same to you. It's fine and dandy that you do find it funny, but you aren't immune to criticism because you're edgy. That's freedom of speech, right?

Complacency and ignorance. Like many other incidents they simply decided it wasn't worth the cost to fix that hazard and had to wait until it actually became a problem.
I was just a young guy at the time of the incident. But on previous visits to the park, I noted the sliding walls and wondered if it wasn't going to be a problem. I guess it was.
I'd never heard of this attraction at all, so I initially thought the warning was the setup to a joke, and the next couple of minutes were going to be a riff on dumb management decisions or something. It seemed like the kind of deadpan thing this channel would do.
The first time I heard about Debbie's death it was written as if it were an urban legend. It was on some website several years ago. That is tragic and horrifying to think about.
godzillab10 I never even knew somebody died there but last time I was at Disneyland when I went to that building I felt a bit uneasy like something was there following me and now I know why
I remember seeing fake footage of “Debbie’s death” which not only was sickening because of the fact that they were making money off of lies about a girls tragic death but was terrifying because of the scream
Out of all the Disney history videos and blogs I've seen concerning America Sings, yours has to be one of the most respectful and tasteful in regards to the death of Miss Stone. Thank you so very much for showing such tact while still remaining informative.
HeaDoNCoLLiSioN8 It's usually tasteless to speak lowly of someone who's no longer around do defend themselves, especially since nobody knows how Debbie ended up between the two walls in the first place.
I am surprised it ran as long as it did, considering. I would have thought Debbi's death & the circumstances would cast such a pall over the ride, many guests would stay clear of it & thus, America Sings would fall into neglect & then closed much earlier.
It’s really weird you see videos mentioning that people have spread their relatives ashes and you hear about this tragic and unfortunate story yet when you got to Disneyland or Disneyworld all of that slips your mind and you don’t even think about that. I’ve been to both parks and have never even thought about the incident despite knowing about it
Before Deborah, all the deaths that occurred at Disneyland were due to the guests being dumbasses and not obeying the ride rules. It's a shame these people were cut down in the prime of life, because they would've made excellent rocket scientists.
I just can't believe there are apologists out there who would take a mega corp's side in a situation like this where there were clear safety hazards that the company only addressed after one of their employees was killed. But then, it's Disney―there are people who will apologize for _everything_ Disney does or has ever done
Agreed. Money talks. If this was a small company that had allowed her death to happen we probably wouldn't be hearing of them for much longer bc the company would go under, or at least it'd be a huge blow for them. but disney? Yeah we'll just clean up for a few days and we're back in business. No compensation needed for killing someone when you've got money!
It’s a common bit of wisdom about Disney and the Theme Parks. While you might find an attorney with great clout and a staff that won’t leave a case alone. It’s very hard if not impossible to successfully sue and win against Disney. A great amount of law suits against Disney are settled out of court with no publicized settlement. It has been said that with a cash settlement Disney will offer lifetime access to all their parks and resorts to the survivors.
@@rogerdeanmassie3314I think I read Disney basically doing the same thing with the family of Rebecca Coriam, a cast member who disappeared on one of the Disney cruise ships. Seriously though, who would ever want to do anything Disney-related, free or not, knowing a loved one died within the company
@@rogerdeanmassie3314 As if I would want to go back to the parks after they ground up my kid like that. The problem is people are content to take a large pile of money instead of clinging to their principles. They need to force a day in court, force a trial, and even if they loose make the mouse squeal.
Many of these comments are just thanking him for being so respectful to the death of Debbie Stone and I think that says a lot about the Disney community, so thank you all for recognizing that this is indeed incredibly heartbreaking and must be treated with respect towards the family and the history
I agree. When you place your workers near a dangerous spot and turn off the lights at the height of the danger, bad things happen. I don't buy the popular story that "she was trying to switch theaters." What would be the point of doing that?
@@jenniferbourne1053 She could have been trying to watch the show, it was part of her job to go into the empty theatre that the guests just left or she needed to go to the bathroom?
According to Debbie's family, they filed suit with the park not just for money, but so they would take better precautions to prevent such a tragedy from happening again. They said the people from Disney were very nice to them.
I mean, I see what you're saying since big companies tend to do this, but it sounds like we really don't know what exactly happened and if we don't, you can't really put a blame on anyone
Happy 4th, Defunctland Community! I hope you enjoy the surprise episode! Have a great day! NOTE: To those that are not familiar with my previous videos, the "homosexual fast dancing" is a reference to my video on Videopolis. It is not a homophobic joke.
I think a turkey would have been better instead of a Owl accompanying the bald eagle since the turkey was the other contender for the title of American national bird.
That or include a turkey as a third and make it a trio imagine a turkey as a character trying to upstage the eagle because he got pushed aside as the national bird. That said a jealous foul attempting to upstage a more recognized and beloved character would be a bit too much of ripping off daffy
To be honest I'm glad the "footage" of Debbie Stone used in this video was fake. Considering what happened to her I don't think anybody ever needs to see the real thing. It's very sad, I can't imagine being a parent and having to hear about that.
@@TheWrongHands18 I can't imagine anybody wanting to film a girl's death in any case; I'd like to hope that people would try to help her rather than filming it.
There isn’t footage of her death itself (for obvious reasons) but there are plenty of possibly fake but horrifying ones that were bootlegs of the ride itself and you can hear her. Again, more than likely fake. But just typing Debbie stone into the search bar shows up four or five of the same video, and all have Spanish titles.
Unlikely. Generally stuff like that is cleaned up by professionals who specialize in cleaning biohazard materials. I would really hope at least Disney hired proper cleaners.
@@russianvalkyrie2358 that's not provided by the government, though, so its entirely possible they just didn't hire someone to clean up and instead made staff do it
Wow this is crazy, but my wrestling coach and western civ teacher in high school was a cast member at disneyland during this time. I can remember during a free day him telling stories about working there. Mostly mundane stuff like meeting his wife there and partying after hours, but he also told us about the gruesome America Sings death, even drawing a diagram on the dry erase board showing how she got caught. I remember him saying he wasn't friends with Debbie but knew of her, and quit the park shortly after because of the way they handled her death. Man, I completely forgot about that until stumbling on this video. Small world I guess.
One of the things I recall about this attraction was that the transition from stage to stage was very smooth. I did not know until after we left the building that it wasn't the stage that was moving, it was us! I honestly could not feel any vibrations from the floor.
I got so scared I had to pause the video and read the comments. And based on these comments I'm gonna skip to 8:57. Thanks for saving me from potential nightmares.
Jayheartsjonas :( he did. I had seen an interview of one of the guys who had to program the ride and he was talking about how every night he would have nightmares about the weasle
Wow, I had no idea that someone died because of this attraction until I watched this video. Thank you for handling this sensitive subject in a respectful way.
Candy Ninja666 he didn’t do anything to ME, but he is part of the reason people are such pussies nowadays. People die every day. It shouldn’t be a sensitive subject. Nothing should be a sensitive subject. People should be able to state opinions no matter how many people are “offended” by the said opinion. The person who died was a stupid person and her death was the consequence for her actions. If you jump in water you will sink.
MNCM Productions What's wrong with you? There's nothing in the comment that proves they were offended in any way. And what's wrong with being sensitive? It means you have a heart, and you care. Yes people die every day but it doesn't mean it doesn't affect those who knew the person who died. The topic of death itself isn't a sensitive one. But the death of a PERSON IS. Especially if the death was a gruesome one like hers. And mocking her and her death is extremely disrespectful. You have no 100% proof of what actions caused her death, so don't make assumptions about what happened. It seems the only one who's offended here is you. You're the only one to leave a reply like that. If you weren't offended, then you wouldn't have replied.
"The attraction was closed for cleaning" God damn that's chilling, just the nonchalant way of saying it. Imagine what was going through the heads of those who had to clean that up, the nightmares they must've had for weeks afterwards... As stupid and immature as it sounds, this horrifies me in the same way Five Nights at Freddy's does.
It was almost certainly handled by a crime-scene cleanup crew. If that is the case (as I said, It almost certainly is) then chances are theyve seen things of that nature before.
I would not ever wish to see what being crushed between 2 walls would do to a person. I hope that the people who had to do recover her remains were able to put it out of their minds. That is tragic.
@@annakyork7223My uncle Maurice in his phone was watching Facebook until he found Debbie Stone's mother Marilyn Stone (yeah she has Facebook) and uncle Maurice knew about Debbie's death so he wrote Marilyn to offer her his condolences about Debbie's death and Marilyn was agreed and she asked my uncle if Debbie was on his prayers and he said yes and Marilyn send him an smiling emoji and ended the conversation, also before ending the conversation Marilyn told my uncle that she is 87 years old (so she was born in 1936) and Bill is 91 (so he was born in 1932), also the age of Debbie's brothers Bill Jr. David Steve and Roger, (Bill Jr. was born in 1957, one year after Debbie, David was born in 1958, one year after Bill Jr., Steve was born in 1964 and Roger was born in 1969)
You mentioned the carousel of progress, my grandfather was an electrician and he went to the worlds fair when it was first shown, he wired some panels on there.
Something fun about the G2 Droids in Star Tours is that, in both versions of Star Tours (the original and The Adventures Continue) there's one that sings a variation of "I've Been Working on the Railroad," a song that the geese used to sing in America Sings.
There's a piece of trivia you forgot to mention - the Rock n Roll portion of the show was repurposed to be a final exam for Imaginners in training, tasking them with programming the animatronics
What an interesting video. R.I.P Debbie. That must’ve been a truly horrific night for Debbie’s Family, the people visiting the attraction, and Debbie’s fellow cast members.
While it's unknown exactly how old that song is, consindering it was from the Old West, it must been written sometime in in 19:th century, at least over four and a half decades (if not more, which is most likely) as Song of the South was released in 1946. The oldest known recording of "Who Shot a Hole in my Sombrero" was made by Rex Allen two years later so in that sense beinga spiritual successor would be true. Going by actual timeline of history, since this is an old folk song from the 19:th century, I'd rather say the opposite (but hey, a lot of stuff that is racist now was mundane and okay back then before we thought of equal treatment no matter what "race" we are).
In junior high, Debbie's gruesome fate was the talk of the blacktop. I thought a friend was pulling my leg, but no; heard it from several sources, then the evening news. At the time, I was obsessed with Disneyland, growing up just ten miles from there, and this tragedy traumatized me. It's all I could think about. I still love Disney, but that day changed something. I sure never went in that building again, so I'm glad I got to see America Sings beforehand.
Jesus. That's the kind of death you hear about happening on an oil rig or something. I've always been a Disney park nerd, and I've known that a cast member was killed on America Sings since I was a kid, but now that I know about how painful and debilitating crushing injuries can be, this is _so much worse._ I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
The background song that was playing while explaining Debbie’s death was extremely Erie when it comes to a story like this…. Whatever that music is named fits and terrifies you seeing the walls that killed her move and how close together they were there is no way in surviving that. And the “closed for 2 days for cleaning” sent chills down my spine, absolutely horrific.
Well theres not too much better a way to refer to it, anything you said it would still be tainted by the fact that the whole reason the placed needed cleaning and repair is cause of what happened what I don't understand and have a feeling never will is why was the system inverted to run in the other direction, seems kinda weird if the building was set to go in a certain direction, why change it. Also why did it take such an accident to prompt someone to go oh man we really should install break-away walls and lighting to show the place you shouldn't be when the theater moves. I mean at least to stop people from doing dumb things, like jumping from seating area to seating area. Granted I would hope people are smart enough not to do stuff like that, but with the amount of people that have J-walked in front of a speeding car my hopes are not well founded
The word "cleaning" brings to mind blood and other less.... tasteful... things being scraped off the walls. Unfortunately, it's really the only word that works....
I like how u approached the Debbie’s death part of the ride. And the warning at the end, I watch a lot of other channels, there horror channels so it’s understandable, who only foucue on the death that occurred. It’s nice to finely know more about this ride.
I wasn't aware of Miss Stone's passing until about 28 years later and I was reading a book about Disneyland and read about it. It was a very sad event.
This was one of my parents favorite ride. We got to sit in comfortable chairs, there was air conditioning and my sister and I loved to sing along with the songs with my folks. I have such wonderful memories of the ride and since my sister and I were so young we were sheltered from the tragic accident. Wasn't there a ride where you "shrunk" and went into atoms?
There was, it was called body wars i believe. i also believe it was in Epcot. Though i can't say for certain since I've never been to a Disney park before.
Adventure Through Inner Space. It was closed in the early `80s, and the building became the home of Star Tours in the mid-80s. Star Tours was a *HUGE* improvement over Adventure Through Inner Space.
"A concept that would later develop into the Experimental Prototype Community Of Tomorrow (or Typhoon Lagoon for short)" That was funnier than it should have been.
Are you the one leaving the flowers that I have clean up every night? I only get paid 12 dollars per hour! It's not in my job description to be cleaning up flowers.
I know everyone's saying that you informed us about Debbie's death differently than others, but let me just say that you informed us in a respectful manner. Some people think is cool to play the "twilight zone" music and have bloody font when talking about her death so that it fits the "haunted" theme, and some people have the, "The animatronics are haunted and evil now 'cause a young woman died in there!" theory. But you didn't, and I appreciate the fact that you were respectful and mature about it 😊
Great presentation. I remember this attraction as a child, as one of my favorite in Tomorrowland. I only heard of Debbie's death decades later. But I was very happy to see the animatronic character used again in Splash Mountain. I had no idea they also featured them on Star Tours. Thanks for the info.
The deaths at the Disney parks are extremely eerie but fascinating. Debbie's death is extremely unsettling and tragic. It's unbelievably vile that Disney ever reopened the ride after her death. It seems like such a callous insult to her memory.
i think the worst part about how disney handled Debbie's death is the fact that the attraction was only closed for 2 days for "cleanup". something about that is just really gross to me.
they didnt even do much of a investigation probably they just cleaned up and i dont even wanna think about what they were cleaning up even though i have to they were probably cleaning up debbies dead body or something like that
Thank you for being so respectful when talking about what happened to Debbie. Her passing has been grossly sensationalized by many people and a lot of distasteful speculation has been done about what happened that day
Thank you for putting out such excellent videos Kevin. You do great work. I consider myself an attraction history buff myself, so I just love seeing like minded folks making such awesome videos. I have some interesting suggestions for you, one of which is going to be a bit of a challenge, but if anyone can do it, it's you. Adventures Through Inter Space (Disneyland) It was a dark ride sponsored by Monsanto that closed to make way for Star Tours. There isn't a ton of video footage, at least that I've found, but you seem like you could find more than I could. A couple other suggestions I have are: Journey Into Imagination (Epcot) This is the original version and would be an interesting history lesson for everyone. Rocket Rods (Disneyland) Probably Disneyland's second biggest failure of an attraction behind Superstar Limo. Stitch's Supersonic Celebration (Magic Kingdom) I've noticed you don't have any shows in Defunctland yet, so why not include the worst show in Walt Disney World History that closed after 3 weeks in operation? That would be fun. Sounds Dangerous Starring Drew Carry (Disney's Hollywood Studios) Widely viewed as one of the worst, if not the worst attraction in Walt Disney World History. Those are just a few suggestions. I have more, but I'll save them for a future time. If you have any of your viewers who would like to see all kinds of current theme park related videos mainly from Orlando area parks, but I will soon be expanding to California with a trip in the fall, feel free to give a shout out to my channel, TheThrillSeekersShow. I'm currently working on making HD and 4K quality recordings of all major attractions at Walt Disney World and some other exciting content, so feel free to drop a shout out if you feel so inclined. Thanks for making such awesome videos and keep up the great work!
I'm amazed at how much of an impact the Debbie Stone story has on people. It has been like this for years and I have never understood it. Sometimes it's even a bit scary with some people. She was clearly an inspiring person..
I watched this video for the first time about two years ago two months later I go to Disneyland and ride Splash mountain the moment I saw the animatronics I was so creeped out
Reminds me of that episode of the Simpsons where Marge got a job cleaning up crime scenes and the experience gave her serious PTSD, desensitizing her to everything around her
as a cleaner i feel justified in asking.. wtf? have some respect. a human died. any cleaner who was asked to clean up, or even a team would have had utmost respect and reverence while doing it. i mean.. shoot. ive had emergencies involving humans and the worst days of their lives.. you always have to treat things with the utmost respect. jesus..

Thanks for posting. America Sings is my first memory of this building as a kid and was very disappointed when Disney took it down, but I did understand why. The last time I went on it, it was so empty and no one clapped anymore as the theater rotated to a new era. I would later work many years in that same building as an Innoventions Cast Member and while working there I went to Walt Disney World for the first time and was able to see the Carousel of Progress.
It’s disgusting that after she died they cleaned the theatre and reopened in two days. Meaning people watched the show meters away from where she died only days before.
yea thats horrible like i get they cleaned it but they didnt have to open it like 2 days after she died because tragedies are horrible things and they atleast should have closed it for about a week to also investigate but not suddenly repoen it 2 days later like i get it was new but someone died its not really something you reopen just after someone dies
This attraction was always a personal favorite of mine. I still catch myself occasionally singing some of those songs in the manner of which they were portrayed in America Sings.

Out of all the Disney history videos and blogs I've seen concerning America Sings, yours has to be one of the most respectful and tasteful in regards to the death of Miss Stone. Thank you so very much for showing such tact while still remaining informative.
HeaDoNCoLLiSioN this is honestly the second time I've seen a history of video handle a death that would be remissed if you forgot it
HeaDoNCoLLiSioN8
It's usually tasteless to speak lowly of someone who's no longer around do defend themselves, especially since nobody knows how Debbie ended up between the two walls in the first place.
I can't believe I'd never heard of the controversy around this ride. That is extremely grim.
I am surprised it ran as long as it did, considering. I would have thought Debbi's death & the circumstances would cast such a pall over the ride, many guests would stay clear of it & thus, America Sings would fall into neglect & then closed much earlier.
It's a well-known fact these days that every time someone starts talking about America Sings, a giant elephant settles into the room.
"Stone's parents attempted to sue Disney, but they lost in court because they were Disney."
You can just say it, we're all thinking it.
Disney is a Xionist's product
Many of these comments are just thanking him for being so respectful to the death of Debbie Stone and I think that says a lot about the Disney community, so thank you all for recognizing that this is indeed incredibly heartbreaking and must be treated with respect towards the family and the history
The Disney community is more classy than the Disney company has become.

It's disgusting how Disney got away with hardly paying for Debbie's death when they were clearly at fault.
Yep. Sometimes this channel makes me forget what a fucking monster Disney is
I mean, I see what you're saying since big companies tend to do this, but it sounds like we really don't know what exactly happened and if we don't, you can't really put a blame on anyone

What about saddlesour Swanson?

To be honest I'm glad the "footage" of Debbie Stone used in this video was fake. Considering what happened to her I don't think anybody ever needs to see the real thing. It's very sad, I can't imagine being a parent and having to hear about that.
I'd imagine any footage would've been quickly confiscated by Disney.
in 1974 it would have to be a film camera. No chance anyone just happened to be ready to film on a moments notice.
@WhiteFlagsFly YT u ok fam?
“Cleaning?” Oh lord is that dark. Imaging being a crew worker tasked with doing that.
Unlikely. Generally stuff like that is cleaned up by professionals who specialize in cleaning biohazard materials. I would really hope at least Disney hired proper cleaners.
Oh god 😧
I would assume they would use a cleaning company that specialises in cleaning crime scenes and stuff.
I could never do that job.
@@russianvalkyrie2358 that's not provided by the government, though, so its entirely possible they just didn't hire someone to clean up and instead made staff do it
They probably got PTSD from that. Dear goodness

Wow, I had no idea that someone died because of this attraction until I watched this video. Thank you for handling this sensitive subject in a respectful way.
TheMythey awww, were you offended you little special snowflake fuck
MNCM Productions Oi, what did he ever do to you.
Hayley D Well said, this guy has no respect and no heart at all.
Sam can be found...
His animatronic base was reused as briar Fox on splash mountain. Ollie became Briar Rabbit.
"The attraction was closed for cleaning"
God damn that's chilling, just the nonchalant way of saying it. Imagine what was going through the heads of those who had to clean that up, the nightmares they must've had for weeks afterwards... As stupid and immature as it sounds, this horrifies me in the same way Five Nights at Freddy's does.
NiGHTSintoMemes They didn't want to concern the public.
And I can say for FNAF...you don't know the story...
It was almost certainly handled by a crime-scene cleanup crew. If that is the case (as I said, It almost certainly is) then chances are theyve seen things of that nature before.
It was probably people who are used to cleaning up bodies.
I would not ever wish to see what being crushed between 2 walls would do to a person. I hope that the people who had to do recover her remains were able to put it out of their minds. That is tragic.
The nonchalant way you mentioned the ride being closed for cleaning following Debbie's death gave me CHILLS. What a horrible way to go out

I’m guessing the “ Who Shot a Hole in my Sombrero?” song is the spiritual successor to Song of the South
Song of the South 2: South of the Boarder

The "for cleaning" at 8:17 sent shivers right down my spine...
“Closed two days for cleaning” is one of the most gruesome things I’ve ever heard and it’s not even that bad.
I feel like the outdated footage, along with the horrifying backstory, creates an intense sense of unease. Great video.
“Closed for cleaning” Id hate that job
8:18 cleaning? That sounds grim.
Well when someone gets mangled to death, the mess has to be cleaned up at some point...
@@compzac I think it always ran in the wrong direction. It was just poorly designed.

The deaths at the Disney parks are extremely eerie but fascinating. Debbie's death is extremely unsettling and tragic. It's unbelievably vile that Disney ever reopened the ride after her death. It seems like such a callous insult to her memory.

A couple other suggestions I have are:
Journey Into Imagination (Epcot) This is the original version and would be an interesting history lesson for everyone.
