    64 classes may sound like a lot. However, it is essentially just 8 main classes with 8 different combinations added to them. Without unique abilities accompanied by these secondary classes, it only takes a couple of months before players realize which combos to avoid. In translation, players will only bear in mind the best one or two combos out of each class - roughly 16. The only tough thing to balance is to make them unique enough to keep people entertained.
    Rift is often a game I refer to when it comes to unique builds. It is absolutely possible no one else in the server may share the same build as you, unless you decide to give out your build. I am not going to say too much about the talent trees here. The talent tree is a game within itself. Balancing all 48 jobs, each with it own unique abilities, it was truly a balancing nightmare. But Rift did the design so well, I haven't found any other games which is second to it.
    I feel somewhat sadden to hear there aren't unique abilities to the secondary classes in AOC. I enjoy a lot more on ability choices than limited class combos.

      Let's be honest, nowadays the only thing people will do is watch a youtube video and call it "Meta" and still get rolled on by players with skill and good combat awareness. In most PvP situations there are always ways to build outside the box.
      With a PvX MMO there's a lot more wiggle room for builds because you aren't just building for PvE or PvE, you have to be prepared for both. Most youtubers will focus on one or the other and call it "optmal" gonna be easy fights if people do that.

      They have a huge team, we may be a bit overwhelmed with the amount of content. I heard WoW classic only had about 40 people on vanilla. AoC has about 150 or more people working on it.

    @Nyce: There are some rogue videos out there, they are pretty cool. I would suggest you to take a look at it.
    Rogue can go invisible, scale up walls, unlock locations, deploy or identify traps.

      I put Ranger first, because of Camouflage, which I understand as Stealth at a distance, then I figure Rogue Secondary has got to grant some Stealth, for augmenting Camouflage at the very least.
      I hoping I can run away, and lose my pursuers.
      It worked in High School.

      @@antondovydaitis2261 rofl. I feel you there. Run and Hide has a lot going for it. A combination that can give stealth, speed and the ability to hide would be a really fun combo to play. I feel like the best way to give non-PvP focus players a great space in Ashes is to provide build options that are all about disengage and flee.

      Necromancer is summoner/cleric.
      The shadow disciple (cleric/rogue) is more likely to be that type of character imo.

    in short, there are 8 classes, and the secondary classes are not changing the base class, but just changing or adding a little effects to thr abilities. so this is not 64 classes, but rather 8, with each class having flexibility to change some of his effects.

    I've settled on Py'rai Scout (Ranger/Rogue) for solo exploration, and Niküa Beastmaster (Summoner/Ranger) for the Pirate's Life.

    I'm glad you mentioned GW2 when discussing the ranger (GW1 of course also had a swappable secondary class, but it was just for skill access and not augmenting the primary class as in Ashes...) However, I'm not seeing anything like a GW Mesmer... GW1 with the Mesmer having the "meta" abilities, or GW2 Mesmer with highly creative utility (clones, portals, plus some "meta" skills, eg. Chronomancer...)

    I really don't understand why MMOs feel it necessary to "Balance" classes rather than gong with Pokemon or Raid type solution where no one character is even close to being good at everything. Put in neutral abilities that are flat against everything, and them give every player character a type and abilities that are either strong or weak against certain other classes or mobs.
    You can either go with 10 or so different types or just 3 or 4, with one being a slight strengthening of the neutral class. So many single player games have gone with this, but it seems that when you go MMO they don't think it will sell. What it does do is completely clear up the issue of balance. Even the best player is going to run into noobs that just happen to be the rock to their scissors.

      ​@@Nyce-Gaming I think you missed my point entirely or you just repeated it. Of course the game has to be rock paper scissors, that is what I said. The question is how to do it. How do you make one class better than another but not better than them all? And why try so hard to balance them all against PvE content?
      Generally, the classes end up being just the holy trinity, with dps being better than tanks and healers sucking. And it is really hard not to make a super-class.
      I think you have to do something clever like have all the classes that are counters to each other do extra damage or deplete the other's ability resource or something, not just have a playstyle that is naturally effective against them.

      Go ahead and try to design Rock Paper Scissors with 8 classes, you can't get good results. Just draw eight circles and arrows between them.
      Such schemes work much better with an odd number of classes.
      So whatever it is, it won't really be Rock Paper Scissors.
      In any case, one-on-one is not that important.
      To be honest, I think classes having distinct and necessary utility is more practical. Thus, the larger the group, the more utility (in its broadest sense) is included. As long as groups are missing something important unless they have all eight archetypes, that should be good enough.
      Therefore, the main thing to avoid is having DPS able to substitute for other utilities.

    Also, as far as Bard goes, I think that the way it was utilized in Dark Age of Camelot may give a good hint to how AoC will flesh it out - the difference being that it looks as if you will have even more options in AoC. In DAoC, though, the bard was a "force multiplier". You didn't absolutely NEED a bard to compete in PvE or PvP, but if you had a bard who was played by a decent player, your group generally had the upper hand in any encounter. Buffs, heals, resource (mana / stamina / life) regen, crowd control was the main way that you'd play a bard in DAoC, but it looks like your options in AoC will be even cooler.

      Yea Bard never seemed appealing to me outside of the normal buff role until I started thinking about how it could add extra utility to a group or 'flare' to it's kit. Was the bard in Camelot pure support?

      @@Nyce-Gaming No it wasn't pure support. When the game first came out, "battle bard" was meta. People would go out there and solo as a bard. I actually kind of introduced the new meta (seriously) where you went a little less into damage and CC, and dumped more points into healing. People kept asking about my build and it caught on as more of a support role. It was insanely good because you could pvp without a "main" healer, but still get excellent crowd control.

      And when I say "excellent crowd control" I mean that we could run 4 man groups with me on heals and CC, and beat groups of 20 because of the crowd control. The healing was just good enough to keep people up while we picked groups apart, sometimes one by one as I kept the others on lockdown.

    People are worried that the classes wont be balanced. Im not sure that Intrepid need to balance all the classes as such, rather make sure that all builds will be vulnerable to a counterbuild.

      @@Nyce-Gaming It is probably tougher to to try and balance 64 classes in a more traditional way than taking a rock paper scissors approach. I would simply come up with 32 extremes to capture with the classes then do the polar opposite with the other 32 and then balance them against the opposing extreme build and itself. Then in simple terms you just need to find the balance between speed, stealth, range and power to give all the builds a chance to succeed.

    I know this is an older vid. But the easiest way to solve class imbalance.... Is to build in class imbalance. Have systems that automatically adjust class power based on Seasons, weather, events, holidays, triggers, starsigns etc. Based on affinities to these things. One day X class tops DPS meters. The next another. Hell even freak small periods. If there is no set in stone Tune then metas based on pure power can't exist. I have a funny feeling ashes will be doing a little bit of this atleast as has been teased but how far they may run with it is unknown. All you have to do is tune the classes in the rough ballpark and let the system do its thing. The way ashes is being created to be very dynamic for everything including dam MOB meshes & textures. It would be an easy thing to do. (Once made ofc lol)

    Now i know i most likely wont be the one to get these if it will be implemented but i must suggest special abilities and i dont mean an ultimate or some bs i mean some abilities or items that will be one of a kind only one player can have them and as soon as i got an ability no one can have it it will be my specialty or if its an item u can trade it but once some one discover it no one alse can find it untile its been used or whatever now im not saying i got any idea of how to do it but i think it will be incredible

    the only reason not to balance them would be, if THEY DIDNT CHANGE THE GAME AT ALL. they have 64 sub classes, so thats what they have to balance.
    and in a pvp game, balance is literally everything. seeing how other mmos have done, they are so scewed.

    Still no eastern-style fighter class in any new games I'm seeing (Fist weapons/gauntlets. Punches/kicks). How unfortunate and disappointing.

      I think with this specific class system it’ll be fine. Most mmos are looking at about 8 ‘archetypes’ . I think balancing the archetypes and augments will keep things simple and not as overwhelming as looking at it as 64 classes perhaps

    It’s a shame that they are making such a great game and yet I know that greifers guilds will destroy the game. I wish they had PvP and ‘PvE servers. Those servers could still allow you to have town battles. But on wagon escorts could have the game spawn bandits at times to attack. I played lineage which Steven played and should let him know that the system he is using didn’t work then.

      Steven has spoken in the system a couple of times. i think upon alpha 2 and a lot of player feedback, these concerns or any potential work arounds will be solved by release

    This sounds like ArcheAge, where only a handful of classes are of any use, and the rest are ignored and forgotten.
    And these animations are still unsightly, it’s supremely disappointing. There are Skyrim modders who have made better animations and gear models.

    If a mmo game ever were designed to be PvE only … and threw a bone with duels or arenas just for fun and no advancement … they would finally be truly free to not give a rats ass about class balance which would be way way way more interesting for pve players
    The last game that even did this I can think of was EverQuest even with their token ralos zek and talon zek “pvp” servers
    But I don’t think any modern game company would take a chance on developing a mmo without pvp unfortunately even though I think it would be a hit because of the interesting things you could do when class balance for pvp was irrelevant
    I believe it would have such a following that the revenue would be high without PvP players as customers
    Hard to get bean counters to green light it though I’m sure

      I think devs are concerned with balance in PVE as well however. I'[ve seen so many balance changes revolving around the strength of something in PVE, but i get what you're saying though.

    ashes of creation is the next star citizen citizen aka forever alpha they showed alpha one around the time classic wow launched August 26, 2019 about 4 years ago and they are only in alpha 2.
    let that sink in.

      @@hvdiv17 I think last I looked into it, they were developing for 6-7ish years. I think factoring the pandemic, unreal engine upgrade and such, it’ll be a lil while. I know eso was about 7 years if I recall. T&L coming out soon and that’s been like a 10 year wait

      Yes, they never had ANY delays at all.. I know we like to pretend 2020-2021 didn't happen but let's be real.
      Plus the MMO community is such a bunch of crybaby snobs you HAVE to come out with an MMO that can compete with current MMO's as far as content goes or you fall flat on your face.
      If you don't have the content for modern MMO players you will always fail, the expectation is that they will get more gameplay out of a current AAA MMO and despite the fact that some MMO players complain about waiting because they're bored and want something new, they would absolutely tear Ashes apart if it was lacking in content.
