Physiological changes during Pregnancy | Systemic & Metabolic Changes | Nursing Lecture

Physiological changes during pregnancy are due to the increased metabolic demands for the mother & the fetus, which brings about the changes, here the changes in various systems & Metabolics are discussed in brief.
1. Systemic Changes -
- Hematological Changes - Increased Blood volume, increase Blood plasma & blood cells, Hemodilution state, increase WBC, increased coagulation factors (Hypercoagulable state)
- More water retention (hypervolemia state), activation of RAAS & decreased osmotic threshold increases thirst in a woman, weight gain around 11-12 kg.
- Cardiovascular changes - Increase CO, SV & HR decrease in SVR & BP. Displacement of heart.
- Respiratory changes- Increased Tidal volume, hyperventilation state, chest circumference increases, Residual capacity decreases.
- Urinary Changes - Frequency of micturition in 1st & last trimester, Renal flow increases, GFR increases.
- GI changes- Nausea, vomiting, constipation, atonic gut, heartburn
2. Metabolic Changes- Increased demand for iron, calcium, protein, glucose, fat & lipids.
